App State leads FCS in football attendance

Unread post by norrisrk » Mon Feb 11, 2013 2:58 pm

Appalachian State leads the FCS in average football game attendance for the last five out of six years. We filled over 130% of the stadium, and had on average 1,000 more fans than the second highest average, that school being Montana. That's great news for us!

Why Why WHY! do they have to count playoff games when the FBS doesn't have games like that that pull their average down. 30k looks a hell of a lot better than 24k.

Attendance over the past five years. Slight higher the past two years, but that could have something to do with the quick playoff exits not dragging down the overall average.

2012 - 26358
2011 - 26211
2010 - 25715
2009 - 24004 (Montana #1)
2008 - 25161

If we're going to harp on the good (leading the FCS in regular season attendance), we have to be able to take the bad (dismal showing during the playoffs) along with it.

I thought the NDSU fan, stevdock, nailed it over at AGS. Of course that's pretty much what I've been saying the past 5 or 6 years.
I really don't understand this crap about 3 days notice isn't enough time to plan for a playoff game. In September I was hoping for home playoff games and knew my coaching schedule might need to be tweaked a little to accommodate it. I started working on my AD then about a basketball tournament so my team could play as early as possible in the day. If App St is the national power they think they are then their fans should EXPECT home playoff games and be able to schedule December home games around that.

I think it's best to compare apples to apples — especially when comparing our numbers to those of FBS programs.

It would be less of an issue if they could move Christmas to February.

Plus there is more to do in the Carolinas and Southeast during the holidays. What all is there to do outside of Fargo? That is literally all they have. ;)

Fargo has a metro area of 200,000+ people. And they're a few hours from the Twin Cities. I'm sure there's plenty to do during the holidays.

App still leads the FCS in excuse making, too.

This is true we do lead the FCS with that. I am a student and make every home/away game possible. Been to 19 of 22 games since I have been in school. Students show up for these games but it would help if we had more alumni make the game. We should always expect to be playing home games the first few weekends of the playoffs.

Sorry I just had to take a jab at NDSU.

Yes.

Since 2000 ASU has made the playoffs 11 out of 13 years. Except in 2000, we've hosted at least one playoff game every year during that span.

Yes, Fargo is a cultural mecca of the upper midwest with an avg high of 22 and low of 5.9 in December. Let's see, sit inside a warm arena and watch a football game for 6 hrs or go ice fishing.

Unfortunately those little domes make it almost impossible for those schools to ever run much of an FBS program if they go there or have aspirations. ETSU couldn't even make it in a small dome in FCS. Idaho's Kibbie Dome limits them to about sixteen thousand, even though they have drawings to maybe make it larger. Guess that is why so many schools in Canada do not play football. NDSU has about the same situation as Idaho.

I was under the impression that in Canada no sports give scholarships. Essentially a country of DIII, which I must state I kinda like. That might change the dynamic a bit as it relates to football.

Isn't there another name for those domes? Igloos, otherwise known as Fargodome

We can put more fans on the hill than we could if stands were there.

When we move to FBS the tickets will be $40.00+. I think those folks deserve a real seat.

True, but the North endzone would be more practical and more environmentally friendly. Of course there are many who don't give a rat's petui about environment.
The comments from fans who visit KBS for the first time invariably mention what a "beautiful" setting and they aren't talking about Howard's Knob or the parking lots. But, to each his own.

PS. $40? Da-n, we better do some wholesale winning if we are going to fill up the stadium regularly. Of course we are going to have to have every penny of that for the added expenses.
