Rating the North Carolina Coaching Hires
Four of NC’s seven FBS football programs recently hired new coaches. We were the only one that did so for being good. No one has a crystal ball, but you can take a look at the resumes, each schools specific situation, the fit, etc and make a decent assessment on how each school did now that all of them are official. I’ll start:
App: A-
ECU: A
UNC: D
Charlotte: C-
App: A-
ECU: A
UNC: D
Charlotte: C-

I should have titled the thread “grading” instead of “rating.” You get the idea.

Re: Rating the North Carolina Coaching Hires
Charlotte's hire is a D. The coach comes from a place that I think is a typo every time I see it. Mack Brown is the worst coaching hire in recent memory, D-. App, for our budget and late start, I will give an A, and ECU got an A with houston.

Everyone here is really underestimating Will Healy. If he does at uncc what he started at AP then they will be a rival. In long run, I think uncc will be better off than EZU.
Most publications give high marks for AppState, EZU and uncc.

Re: Rating the North Carolina Coaching Hires
The problem with the App job is there is very little room for improvement and a long way to go down. The pro is the talent is all there to at least maintain the success.
ECU on the other hand if they have a 6 win season the guy will be hailed as a miracle worker. So that coaching hire could end up looking like an A+ while App barely makes a bowl game and it looks like an F-.

This is like assigning grades before classes start. Way too early to tell how things will work out for any of these hires.

For UNC, that is an A+ hire. That type of character is what they are all about. UNC's motto should be "If you're not cheating, you're not trying hard enough".Black Saturday wrote: ↑Sun Dec 16, 2018 8:00 pmThe Holes hired the Army assistant that bought Wake's playbook a few years back. UNC CHeat

I do. Time will tell. I think that Houston will jump start ezu by doubling win total next year. He did do a slow build at LR but at JMU after the first season he was not able to maintain dominance. Obviously, the CAA is one of the most difficult conferences in the country. Healy began building a winning culture where there flat out never had been one; exactly what uncc needs. His recruiting is off the charts and Hudspeth will reap the rewards as new hire.ericsaid wrote: ↑Sun Dec 16, 2018 11:10 pmYou think Charlotte is better off than ECU?HighlandsApp wrote: ↑Sun Dec 16, 2018 10:04 pmEveryone here is really underestimating Will Healy. If Houston is successful enough then he will jump ship asap. Montgomery recruited some decent talent to Greenville. If Healy can build a foundation at uncc as he was quickly doing at AP, then uncc will be left with something permanent and valuable after he moves along.

Re: Rating the North Carolina Coaching Hires
ECU has the talent to pull a Georgia Southern esque turnaround in 2019. I'm not sure that they win 10 games with the top of the AAC being the way it is, but 8-4 in the regular season is certainly something that can be accomplished for them with Houston. The young QB from Rose in Greenville will be one of the better QB's in the AAC, in my opinion, with a new offense and has the tools to be an NFL type player given his stature and his arm. Houston may implement an option style offense which will suit him well. If not for a fumble-SIX on the goal line against UCF, ECU would've been within 6-points of UCF in the fourth. Instead UCF gets a touchdown and goes up to a 20 point lead on the fumble, effectively ending the game.HighlandsApp wrote: ↑Mon Dec 17, 2018 11:02 amI do. Time will tell. Charlotte hired the coach that fit them best and I had said it before. I think Charlotte is still young and a lot of people give them hell, but ultimately their transition to FBS is much like Georgia State's. There is no tradition but they are in a talent rich area and simply need a foundation from which to build. Their new guy will help with that.
UNC should've offered Satterfield the position as he went through a transition at App and that's exactly what UNC is going to be dealing with. Instead, they let him escape to Louisville where I wholeheartedly expect them to beat UNC consistently so long as Satterfield is there.
However, ECU just planned to allocatw $20 mm to help pull the Athletic Department out of the red that Compher drove them into, as well as building an indoor practice facility. With the support of the program when winning, the facilities, and the attractiveness of quality coaches (not named Mo), ECU is more than a step beyond Charlotte.

Not sure about the rest of them, but I think we got the best of them.
