Future of NO Bowl

Unread post by hotrod2001 » Fri Dec 20, 2019 12:36 pm

I'm not sure (hopefully not) if this has been shown to anyone yet, but NOLA.com did a sit-down interview with the Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill about the status of the conference. One thing which did stick out to me (and will to all of you saying that the NO Bowl is "beneath us at #20 in the standings) is that this this is year 2 out of 2 of a contractual agreement that the conference champion plays in the Superdome and that going forward that status of who plays in it, or more so where the champion plays is still TBD.

So maybe we might have a better bowl tie-in for the conference champ starting next year, who knows.

We have a Myrtle Beach Bowl tie-in with the Sun Belt playing the AAC or MAC on a rotating basis. The Cure Bowl is moving to an ESPN broadcast beginning in 2020 making that bowl very desirable; I believe the tie-in is still AAC. New Orleans is obviously a desirable location and on Prime Time on ESPN, i'm not sure who the tie-in is between 2020-2025.

Assuming the two Alabama bowl's stay, I'd have to assume those may switch between MAC and C-USA but it's hard to say.

I'd like to see the Sun Belt get a tie-in to the Liberty Bowl or take C-USA's spot with a P5 tie-in somewhere. Some secondary tie-ins would be great as well.

We need better tie-ins for this game period.

I think NOLA is an awesome location for the Sunbelt champ but we simply need better tie-ins. We need to get a P5, top 2 or 3 AAC or at worst a commitment from USA to send their champ. Even though I would like Myrtle beach for the proximity I don’t see it ever having the status of a Bowl game in NOLA. Think about the attention this game could have had this year with #20 App. State paired agains a mid level P5 team, Cincinnati, USF or Boise. If paired against a P5 ESPN could have hyped the game big time by asking, “can the giant killers get the hat trick”. If paired against one of the other ranked G5 teams the story could have been, will App. State prove their ready to compete with the best G5 teams. I’m not looking to disrespect UAB but with a different opponent this years NOLA game could have drawn a lot of attention.

Based off what I have seen around the web, it doesn't look like the Sun Belt's bowl lineup is getting much better next year. A lot of other conferences released their 2020-2025 bowl lineups earlier this year, but nothing has come from the Sun Belt so far. That's a bit concerning for me, especially since Keith Gill has a lot to prove with how he negotiates for the Sun Belt to take a step up. Based off what I have seen so far, we will have no P5 contracts and will have limited interaction with conferences that aren't CUSA and the MAC. If that is all true, we are being left behind. All of this is from FBSchedules.com.

That bowl tie-in info is distressing. Appears the Sun Belt has not improved its position at all.

Would be nice to see the Sunbelt champion alternate between the NOLA bowl and the Cure bowl, especially if they can improve the tie-ins.
