So if you are a young coach who wants to fast track to a P5, spend one year in Boone. For a little mountain town everyone (who has never lived there) makes fun of, its proving to be a coaching factory.

Ironic. For all the smack SMU fans were on us, they sure like our staffers.

I understand the dilemma of our situation as a Strong G5 and stepping stone spot......but on the topic of Riley ......I say good riddance....He didn't prove too much in my opinion.....I don't care who his brother is.
Now that I said that watch him become the Nick Saban of twenty years from now

Guess we will see. Riley seemed to be well liked in the RB room, and was said to be a brilliant FB guy. Although his play calling was fairly lackluster in the bowl game, it could have been due to it being his first time as a play caller, and the fact it was drinks playbook, not his.CornCobPipes wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 4:44 amI understand the dilemma of our situation as a Strong G5 and stepping stone spot......but on the topic of Riley ......I say good riddance....He didn't prove too much in my opinion.....I don't care who his brother is.

What surprises me most is that SMU from the vaunted P6 would hire someone from a little ole G5 school as an OC who has never been an OC.
I also wonder how many of the coaches would have left this year if drink had stayed. As it is now, Washington is the only person drink brought in who hasn’t left, at least it hasn’t yet been announced that he is leaving , if he does.

Re: Who stays, who goes?
This is just my opinion but it drives me nuts when a coach is referred to as a genius or “brilliant”, especially one who hasn’t run a team or even shown great results as a coordinator. What exactly exhibits brilliance in a running backs coach? A dude who spent one year at App with the backs we have doesn’t really have to do much. Like the ones before Riley they can’t be blamed for taking the huge pay increases but in his case there are 50 dudes lining up who are just as good. For these guys it’s mostly being in the right place at the right time. I’m sure being the brother of another “brilliant offensive mind” gets him some extra looks. I'm thinking that was likely the issue holding up several other decisions. I have no inside information but I'm thinking things speed up now. I guess we will see.

Re: Who stays, who goes?
I hope so. I guess it depends on who plan b-c is.
The fact that there is still so much movement in the college ranks makes me hesitate until more “bigger” jobs shake out. Obviously we aren’t going to be able to get Our first choice in any spot because someone always throws a little more money at them and they jump. Same as last year.

Re: Who stays, who goes?
Like coach Clark has said, the entire staff has a hand in game planning. That's where Riley's genius comes in. If you think as a RB coach, he goes home as soon as the RBs are done, you are sorely wrong.bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 7:09 amThis is just my opinion but it drives me nuts when a coach is referred to as a genius or “brilliant”, especially one who hasn’t run a team or even shown great results as a coordinator. Riley is an offensive genius. He wasn't able to display it for the fans necessarily, but his input on game plans and suggestions on play calls proved it. When Clark got the nod, Riley was one of his first calls. There's a reason for that. He's proven himself.
All that said, I'm not worried. I've heard some names that have interviewed and we will be in good shape.

Last year I felt:
Iffy on HC, like the retention of assistants.
This year:
Love HC, iffy on assistants.

Re: Who stays, who goes?
Comparing last year to this year mid-process is an exercise in futility. There is time to set the staff. Let's wait and see what we wind up with. I would rather wait and actually hear the FINAL staff that announce early only to have a later announcement that he's going somewhere else.

Is it the assistants we actually have that you're concerned about, or just Jones as DC + the uncertainty?

Re: Who stays, who goes?
I don't get the brilliant and genius talk in reference to Riley. Maybe he is, but were we the first ones(and now SMU) to all the sudden discover this? Did his own head coach brother not even know he had an offensive genius in the family therefore not putting him on the staff at OU? I mean, he came to App as a RB coach last year. You'd think a brilliant genius would have had more opportunities than a RB coach at a G5.
