The last one provided ample ammo for everyone to stick to their preconceived opinions, and I expect this one will do the same.

Re: Football Staff
Welcome home Dale Jones!
I know everyone likes to point to Jones’ 2010-12 stint as DC but the circumstances are completely different now. He has coached in this variation of the 3-4 for 5+ years now and was Co-DC in 2018. Took over as the DC for the 2018 NOLA bowl where the defense held MTSU to 15 points under their season average with a 10 year veteran at QB in Stockstill

He's a legendary linebacker coach.
So far we haven't seen that apply to coordinating.

You know sometimes it's opportunity to have a second chance at a past failure that can really drive you and motivate you to succeed. Not just in football but in all things. No idea if Dale will be better this time but I am hoping for the best.

Re: Football Staff
He will be better second time around. We have the players. He has learned from Woody for 5 years and worked with Brown for the past 2. All he has to do is take the best of both of them, make it his own, and execute our unique 3-4 scheme.

Re: Football Staff
At this point in time I think App needs consistency especially on the defensive side - much more important now than having the "best" coach to come in for a year and leave -GregPercussion wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 5:03 pmI feel similarly. Love having the "app guy" and I love that he's back. But I really want us to get the best coaches for a top 18/19 program in the country.

I think we need coaches that are great game planners and can make in game adjustments. To maintain a top 25 program we’re going to need to outcoach opponents 2-3 times a year.
Jones may be better than some think, but he hasn’t done it before.
Hoping for the best.
This may be a co-DC appointment once it all settles.

Re: Football Staff
Must find one offensive and one defensive coach that is good up in the booth to see and suggest in game changes to those on the field.

Re: Football Staff
Saint you're spot on. You and I can coach Monday - Friday but the real coaching occurs on Saturday between 3:30 - 6:30. Can the coach make adjustments on the fly? Can he make them at half-time? That's when the coaches earn their money.Saint3333 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 9:51 pmI think we need coaches that are great game planners and can make in game adjustments. We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Another good option would be Kyle Richardson, QA at Clemson, although I expect him to get a position job now that Scott is off to USF.

Re: Football Staff
I like Trey Elder, but it would be nice to have someone with some more experience as a coordinator or offense at a higher level. I don’t want an all App staff just because someone played here.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 6:46 amHe may be option B. We need to go after the best available position coaches. If they leave, so be it. Replace them with another highly qualified person. Clark being the HC provides the stability and passion that App needs to retain. The most Successful and experienced coaches and coordinators need to be the target for the rest of the staff

I thought y’all were talking Elder as QB coach only. I looked him up a few weeks back just to see where he was, but I don’t think he has the resume/experience to be a QB coach for us yet, never mind OC.

Re: Football Staff
I'll echo many other sentiments shared in this thread - let's find the best person for the job, who wants to come to Boone, regardless of their alma mater. Just because someone went to App doesn't mean they're going to the the right fit, or at the right time.

Re: Football Staff
Count me as curious , and concerned.Satterfield passed on Dale not once but twice for the DC slot. And there is the afore mentioned previous stint from which he was demoted. His connections to the BOT are well known , I hope that had no bearing.

Re: Football Staff
I’m talking about him as being considered an offensive analyst in the booth with others on game days. Would move to a position coach once there was a vacancy.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 8:20 amI thought y’all were talking Elder as QB coach only. Re: Football Staff
What you say is true in a perfect world sense but as we have seen we had several one and dones. I agree that it is not of significant important as to whether they played for APP or not. Right at this point in time I think it is more important to have some continuity. Next season we will have a very experienced team but after that who knows - to maintain the stability of recruiting the right guys for the right positions is imperative to our situation. That, I believe, has been extremely important in our success over the last several years. We have had players graduate who had a unique skill set - example - Devan Stringer being replaced by Gaither-Davis - and there are others similar to this one. I'm not sure that without continuity in coaches, philosophy, etc., that this kind of example would existBeauFoster wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 9:12 amI'll echo many other sentiments shared in this thread - let's find the best person for the job, who wants to come to Boone, regardless of their alma mater.
