2014 schedule

Unread post by Saint3333 » Tue Jul 16, 2013 9:47 pm

Options are if we are looking to add an FBS OOC home game for 2014. Only the following schools have an opening for a road OOC game:

ODU
UAB
UNCC (still an FCS team in 2014)
Buffalo

The only other option would be to schedule a Sun Belt team as an OOC game.

Texas St. Is really the only one that makes sense.

Not sure we can realistically sign that elusive 6th home game without it being another FCS opponent. As we can't make a bowl it doesn't matter.

We can't play an fellow Sun Belt school as an out of conference I wouldn't think since it's simply not true. Have you heard to the contrary?

Don't get me wrong here guys, I really hope we start this series next year, but we need a home game desperately. If you guys need a home game as well, it probably won't be us.

Odu was our marquee home game, and I believe the preliminary home coming date. If we give up that home date it will be for a fat check somewhere, but I seriously doubt even that. If you guys will play at Charlotte in the 15000 seat stadium next year, it'll probably happen. If not, it probably won't.

agree, App isn't going to Charlotte next year. As far as future games, I hope Cobb has been on the phone with Wake Forest and get that series started again.

If that's the case then we need to step up and pay ODU to come to Boone. Right now they have two non-conference openings (unless CUSA is going to 9 conf games?) so we should be able to make a deal for them to come to Boone. Both schools are in the same boat at this point unlike UNCC who is a year behind in the process.

Agree, out of those ODU interests me the most. Doubt we would pay them though. It would probably be a home and home arrangement.

I doubt Charlotte comes to Boone in 2014 and leaves our fans with 5 home games. If App came to Charlotte in 2014 and then Charlotte in Boone in 2015 maybe it could happen. Even then, we've been hearing Charlotte is still in talks with SEC school for a 2015 away game which would give us a full schedule.

They should go ahead and sign a 5 year deal starting 2017 that includes two games on each campus and one game at Bank of America.

Both App and UNCC want 6 home games for 2014. Let's get creative though.

Team A brings in 10,000 temp bleachers and gives Team B 10,000 tickets and it is the start of a 6 year deal.

2014, 2017, 2019 at Team A
2015, 2018, 2020 at Team B

We also sign a long-term deal for basketball and baseball.

I agree with Saint's line of thinking.

This notion that Bank of America Stadium is a suitable place for an App State home game is, in my opinion, overly optimistic.

a) It's too expensive. It'll take a crowd of 50,000 or more to break even.
b) We've never taken more than 15,000 fans to a game outside of Boone ... not to Winston-Salem or Chattanooga or Greenville or anywhere else. To hope we could put 30,000 App fans in BOA Stadium is letting our desire to play in a 73,000-seat stadium cloud our good judgment.
c) One fewer game in Boone is another lost economic opportunity for the High Country.

There may come a day when such a game would work for us, but that day is not in the immediate future.

I agree that the ASU/UNCC series should get started on campus. If it takes off like we hope, then consider a game at BOA.

The only point I'd argue is B. As I recall, there were roughly 25K at the 2007 title game with about an 80/20 split, give or take 20K App fans there. Granted, the team had already repeated and the return trip wasn't exactly a shock but it was in Chattanooga on a week's notice.

If an announcement came a year or two in advance about a game at BOA, would not surprise me at all if App sold 25K-30K tickets. Lots of alumni that wouldn't have to travel.

I don't know if that's entirely true. I'd wager a guess that we took 22k to Chattanooga in 2007 - maybe more. Now, does that really change the scenario in any way? Probably not. Just felt like adding my $.02.

If Jerry R can give $10 mil to UNCC for a stadium he might give the stadium for a game. I really don't see that as a problem.

The City of Charlotte actually has 5 free uses of BOA Stadium as part of the deal to fund stadium improvements. I doubt it could ever happen but if both schools could make a good enough pitch to the city we might be able to get one of those. The power of politics can make things happen. I do believe with the right opponent we would be able to put many more than 15,000 in BOA.

Yeah he can always go begging Charlotte businesses to foot the bill.

Jerry is not going to comp or give a break on the stadium. He wouldn't even let the school set up tables in the stadium to talk FSLs without paying a large sum.

You're aware that official attendance for that game was 23,010? App officials who have a good handle on these things put our contribution at 13,000. Only the most generous estimates put it at 15,000. I was there. We had a great crowd. But we have to be careful not to rewrite history to fit our narrative.
