This.

It's certainly not as though Price's actions are egregious. In fact, the charge is a bit of a joke. But nonetheless, I feel your pain.

When Montana was going through their troubles 18 or so months ago, it seemed as if every other f*cking day someone was getting arrested. Nothing major, but a DUI here, an MIP there, a reckless driving over there. I mean, WTF?? I understand 20 year olds are going to be 20 year olds. But after watching a few teammates go through it eventually, there has to be a lesson-learned (or one would think).

I don't understand why people seem to want the courts to be involved in the enforcement of team discipline. I have no doubt that Sean told his side to Coach Satterfield before the decision was made. This isn't a case of he said, she said. He was under age and drunk in public. Any way you cut it, there was a violation of team rules. I don't think the outcome of the public charges needs to drive the coach's decision.

That being said, Sean's public statement that was quoted in the press release was very classy. I hope that statement reflects his actual attitude. I would like to see this young man learn his lesson and get back on track. I can only imagine what a highly motivated Sean Price will be like when he returns. These are not heinous charges. He was drinking...which most of us did while at App. The real damage is to himself and to the team. I hope he can put this behind him, pay his debt and re-earn his place on the team.

I don't know what the heck is up with Barnes. Whatever is going on there seems more significant. He's coming off a year's suspension and messes up again? wow. I have to think his scholarship is in serious jeopardy...or should be.

I'm certainly not trying to start a pissing contest here but most of us were not--I MOST definitely was not--an All-America wide receiver.

The level of public/private behavior expectations have to be different between Sean Price and App Gomer (as an undergrad, anyway). If I got drunk and jumped off Rich Mountain AND "The Knob" at the same time, the only people who would have noticed were my immediate family; my Appalachian girlfriend (now wife); and my similarily buzzed-up fraternity brothers.

Sean's situation is way different and it has to be handled in an entirely different way. OBTW--This is the SECOND consecutive season opener he has missed due to a suspension from the team. Come on, man.........................

This is a complete digression, but what pisses me off even more (particularly regarding Barnes who never played a meaningful down at App) is the tuition check that I just wrote to Appalachian State for a straight A student who could have gone wherever she wanted but wanted nothing her whole life but to be a Mountaineer, who has never been in trouble and will ultimately contribute much more to society than these two numb skulls. We build these Kids up way too much and should not be surprised when they F up. A full ride at App is worth about $60K these days and for athletes many of us help to fund that. How does it feel to know that Barnes was a beneficiary of your generosity? For Price who red shirted it is worth > $75K. Could his family afford that if not for us? I don't know but I am sure that is the furthest thing from his mind and to me that is the most disrespectful issue we have in situations like this.

If he were going to be arrested, why couldn't it have been for something meaningful, such as demonstrating against the Watauga BOE mess?

Fairly or unfairly, coaches and players are held to a higher standard than typical students in the public domain. Many students receive similar charges each month if not each week at App, but they aren't in the newspaper. When you hold public office or a high position at a company or university your actions reflect upon the organization you are associated with, the same is true of coaches and players. It this fair or right, I'm not sure, not that is reality. Our coaches have stated such to our players many times.

Did I make mistakes, you bet I did, fortunately for me the price was paid in private with very few individuals knowing about it. Our players though need to know the difference and know they do represent the university.

I think the reaction the coaching staff had is the appropriate one.

What would be your course of action if you were Satterfield?

I think most of us know the right answer (and most painful one) is to bench him immediately for whatever number of games. It might cost us a loss at Montana, but I think it's the right call. Selfishly, benching him against Charleston Southern and A&T would be preferable, but it really doesn't demonstrate that you're serious about this when you get selective on punishment in games you're pretty sure you can win. Price is without doubt a huge talent, but he's got to get his s*** together or he'll be out by his junior year. Many of us did stupid stuff in school - some got caught, some of us were luckier. But when you're under the microscope as a scholarship athlete you have to demonstrate that you're worthy of that investment even aside from your athletic ability. Sadly, Price appears to be on a poor trajectory.

I think Satterfield has handled this appropriately. The act in question deserves punishment and I think it correct for the staff to sort things out before make any definitive suspension time.

I also don't think we should treat Price like he has committed some heinous crime. It is his second offense and that should factor into whatever is eventually handed down. However, I don't believe we should assume that this act will forever taint his life going forward and that he will never make any positive contributions to society. It is a disappointing loss for the team but we should try and keep this in perspective.

Yes, I did some stupid things when I was younger. However, if a policeman told me to shut up and move on or be arrested, even at that age I would have had enough sense to move on.

Sad thing here is that I believe in the 3 strikes rule and hope Satterfield does as well. If so, he can't get in trouble anymore or else he would be gone under that rule. Everyone was talking about him as a big time draft pick way too early. He has to show he can mature and doesn't make these mistakes now. His words were great but he has to show good character through his actions from here on out. I don't care how good he is, while I know a mistake can be made and I forgive, he can't make a habit of this. This needs to be the last suspension he has while at App or else I will say he has had 3 and thus should be gone from the team. I really hope it doesn't come to that. He has a bright future if he grows up.

Of course we all did stupid things back then. I'd imagine we had some sort of consequence to pay for those actions as well. What he did this time isn't a huge deal, but the fact that this is the second time he has been in trouble is alarming. I don't see how you could be against some sort of suspension based off of that alone.

To follow up on my post about the team meeting, evidentially Satterfield pulled a few players (including Price) to the side afterwards to emphasize how serious he was about staying out of trouble. I hope Price can get his head straight and come back, but he has to learn to stay out of trouble.

There is always a line that is not to be crossed. It's true in the classroom, in our families, in business, and everywhere else we go. Many of us would have gotten a whooping if we sassed our parents. We knew where that line was and either chose to go flying past it or stop just short of it. The same held true when we were in school - defy the teacher and be punished in some fashion or stop short of the punishment line.

Our country's Bill of Rights guarantees us that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. It says nothing about freedom from the consequences of exercising those rights.

Thankfully, it is not my place to determine which lines Price or Barnes may or may not have crossed, nor is it my place to determine what consequences they will have for having crossed those lines.

As always, I will choose to focus on the majority who adhere to the rules and earn the right to be part of the Mountaineer family whether they are athletes or not. Let's go beat Montana!

I was walking down Kings between Kingswood Apts and the Wilco for a midnight munchie run 25 years ago and one of Boone's finest stopped to have a conversation with me. The result was an underage drinking citation. When I asked why all I was doing was walking he asked if I would like to add a dissruptive to the charge. I politely thanked him for the ticket and went about my business. You gotta know when to shut up. Defiance pisses cops off and leads to no good especially if you are doing something wrong to begin with.

One of many countless examples of unreasonable, predatory pigs in Boone abusing their power.

What you should have done:
"Have you been dringing?" -No
"Will you take a breathalizer?" -No

Now yelling and cussing at police while you're obviously wasted as a D-1 football player on the other hand is, just as Price said himself in the press release, ill-advised.

You are correct about this. I heard the same thing from two unrelated sources so that's good enough confirmation for me. I hope, in addition to Price, that the others listen and learn from his mistake. Nothing can change what has happened. We can only move forward and hope that this cautionary tale of what not to do is taken to heart by all.
