You Gus are gonna be just fine. You simply ran into a buzz saw last night. UM had a lot of recent demons to shake, and App just happened to be the one to draw that first game. I saw a lot of things to like about your team.

Loved the sportsmanship shown by both teams. And of course, we LOVED meeting and drinking with all of the App fans we met in Missoula.

Coach Satterfield's first words in the postgame radio interview was to compliment how well they were treated by the folks at Montana.

There are a lot of excuses to go around but the fact is we laid an egg. I won't give up on the team after one game but the showing was very disappointing. I was a huge Jerry Moore supporter and will support Coach Satt for the duration as well. However, we have to get on track or our encore FCS season could be a bust. I'm just an armchair quarterback but a few things that stood out to me:

(1) Our O-line is undersized and slow. They may be better than last year, or year before that, but we will face D-lines more like Montana's in the future and we need to beef up. The Griz owned our "veteran" line last night (ie. we crossed the goal line ZERO times).
(2) We need a bruiser running back. These quick Steven Miller/Ricky Ferguson type backs look good in practice but we need someone of the Kevin/Devin mold that can run north to south.
(3) Jackson looked light a deer in the headlights.
(5) Getting a punt blocked is inexcusable.
(4) I'll cut the D a little slack, they are very young and it showed. They seemed confused much of the night so I lay that on preparation. It also seemed we lined up in the 4-3 more than the 3-4, maybe more due to what Montana was doing, but all I've heard about since Woody was hired is our new defensive scheme. It looked more like our old defensive scheme to me. Not sure it would have made a difference in this game.

Gotta get it together guys. Just sayin'....

It was a fabulous trip for us. The courtesies extended by Montana fans were over the top to the point that I felt like I was on a cruise. We enjoyed Kettlehouse, Iron Horse, The Depot, Press Box and especially Reds.

We experienced a single (one) Griz fan that had an in your face attitude. Shortly thereafter, no less than three fans approached us and apologized for the one. Montana is a class program. Thank you for making our trip one for the books. :D

Cant believe this thread. If anything, this game showed we waited too long to move on from Moore. Satterfield is reconstructing a team that has been steadily in decline for 3 years, while also transitioning the offense, and defense, and staff, with the added pressure of having an immense FBS transition looming ahead.

There were a lot of positives in the game, as well as negatives. For me personally, I think a lot of the starting momentum was squandered. Jackson seemed unprepared, un-nerved or tentative, or just off somehow. I think he's trying to take too much on his shoulders personally. He is a 5th year Sr. and a leader, but he is not the all world phenomenal athlete that can dominate a game in both phases. He held on to the ball far too long, and just didn't deliver the ball to the playmakers. The defense had some promising athletes, but our secondary needs to be reevaluated IMO. They were on the field far too long in any case to win that game for us. The OL isn't great, but I wouldn't lay the blame on them for not pass blocking for a QB that holds the ball as long as that all day long.

Hard to judge the secondary since the DL did little to help them. We had absolutely no pass rush. Blair and Robinson were non factors from that stand point. Blair was apparently unstoppable in camp but was effectively neutralized by the Montana OL.

One thing Coach Moore emphasized was taking one game at a time. I'm not sure we entered this season viewing it that way. This talk of a 12-0 season may have been a mistake. On the whole, however, I think Satterfield will learn from this game and we will see a much better prepared team moving forward. I know it's easy to take the first game and extrapolate it for the next 11 games. I think all is far from lost and we have found ourselves in this spot (0-1) to start the season more often than not and we have been able to rebound. Satterfield and company are a resilient bunch.

I'll agree on every point except,

Steven Miller is a pro caliber running back.

We didn't give up a kickoff for a touchdown.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to blame Moore for Saturday's performance.

Folks, we need to start recruiting SIZE again. That smaller, faster approach hasn't worked well for several years and it won't when we transition to FBS. We got skill-position happy the last 5-6 years. We haven't had a really good OL or DL since 2006. Instead of 20 WR/ATH and 10 linemen, how about the other way around? I miss those teams that could run in 2005-2006. I know it's not that simple but just a thought. Maybe it will take Satt a while to undo the last 3-4 years of Moore. We'll see. I have faith we'll mature this season and be fine in year 2 or 3 of FBS.

Jerry Moore served as head coach in 379 games during his career. Scott Satterfield has served as head coach in 1. Anybody drawing conclusions about Satterfield's abilities after one game at Montana is a tool.

I prefer losing to Montana at Montana than the way we lost to the Citadel at home last year.

Good point. Hopefully we can return the favor to El Cid this year, that would be nice.

Ah yes and you're a real testament to popular opinion, taking shots at a post with 11 rep points. If I'm disagreeing or mocking a post by you, I'm most likely being supported by 90% of the members of this forum...

I just posted my sincere response to your post. Is my honesty something for which I should be ashamed?
