JMU = 0%Yosefus wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 5:51 pmLooking at ESPN FPI predictions we are heavily favored vs SoMiss and slight favored vs GaSo. Slight underdog vs Marshall. Heavy underdog vs GaState and JMU. I don't see us losing to SoMiss but who knows. Marshall from what I have seen is in the same dumpster fire as us so it could literally be a toss up. GaState and JMU are clicking along pretty good, I don't see us winning those. GaSo just throw out the record books on that one. They have games ahead of them they could lose them all and we could have a repeat of last year with both of us fighting for bowl eligible on the Hate game. Right now I see our top out at 6-6. Gut says 4-8, ZERO confidence in Clark getting the team prepared each week.
Chance to Win:
SoMiss 83.8% Home
Marshall 49% Home
GaState 35.3% Away
JMU 23.3% Away
GaSo 51.2% Home
Those are depressing odds.

They seriously have some players we should hope to get if they enter the portal. WCU and Furman both have several FBS caliber players.Black Saturday wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 4:17 amHope they have some guys we can get from the portal...lmao

Re: #TeamClark
Been following App and a season ticket holder for over 30 years. The last few years have seen so much change (NIL, transfer portal, etc) it has made me wonder about our "culture" of a program. JM, SS, and now SC have built that "culture" in a certain way. Signing certain types of guys, building them into men, growing their faith, and so on. A lot of that goes out the window with NIL/portal/etc. So the question becomes, is this culture still the way to do it? (see Dabo for another example and the criticism/questions he is drawing around determination to keep a culture).
Which leads to this current dilemma on Coach Clark. Yes, he is family and poured his heart/soul into this program more than the combined efforts of anyone posting on this board. Yes, this is a results business and he is accountable for those results. But I hope we give him, and these kids, another year. Not because of the trend of last year and this year. But because this whole thing has been built on culture and our culture says our guy has a contract and we believe in him and these kids. One more year proves we're committed to this group who signed and agreed to play here. Everyone will know next year is a proving year. And if it doesn't work then there will be no doubts. If we change, next year is likely a bust anyway.
Plus, the "brand" will not be damaged with one more year. See Boise State if you need an example. Without looking it up, anyone know their record? 3-4. They went 10-4 last year, 7-5 the year prior (same 3 year record as us). If Boise comes back next year and goes to the playoff would anyone be surprised? Or even know their "brand" had been down? No. It will be the same with App. The brand is strong enough to hold for now. A few more years, ok. But not yet.
It won't be popular, but I hope we stick it out.

Well Nate Ole buddy. I hope you're post here doesn't draw too much criticism. All good points from how I read it. The last season and this one so far have aged me and several others in dog years. Another with same or worse results I'll have to be put to sleep.asunate wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 10:14 amBeen following App and a season ticket holder for over 30 years. We need to have players ready to play and ready to develop.
BUT, as you can see, our competition is doing a far better job of the NEW college football.
As someone posted, we will see next year if the Transfer U. Model works year over year.

For starters I am not in either camp (fire/not fire). I mostly agree on your post, unless we lose this weekend. That will show me that this staff cannot get this team over any type of hump. At that point, I would like to see a change and give someone else a chance even if that means another rough year (which it would be anyway). IF we can't beat this SM team, at home, then imho there is no hope and it would be counterproductive to retain the staff.asunate wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 10:14 amBeen following App and a season ticket holder for over 30 years. I felt all along this would be a tough year and next year would be a lot better. My preference is not to compound the problem with ANOTHER year of major staff changes. If we lose the rest, blow it up; if we win 1 or 2 and are competitive in the rest, I am good with 1 more year. With all this said, this has been really rough to watch.

I agree with his points in general but Shawn is going to have to beat USM and win a couple games in November or else the boosters just won't care. We were told prior to the year that this team would be better and that Shawn was given all he needs. I think a big issue is that Shawn has not been able to navigate this new era well at all and having a first-time head coach in this era has proven to be hard. If we had known what was coming when we hired him then I wonder if GIllin would have made that move.PhillyApp1 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 11:48 amYou are 100% right...... culture has to be done quickly now.asunate wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 10:14 amBeen following App and a season ticket holder for over 30 years. To the boosters, if we go 4-8 then that will feel like 2 big steps back from 2022 and this team has no business being 4-8. I know we have boosters who already want change but I do hope we can go 7-5 and he gets another year. I have doubts that he leads us to 7-5 but I know we have the talent to do it. If we lose to USM then he is done for sure but I think we beat USM and it all comes down to November for Shawn.

The brand is being tarnished. It's tarnished when teams come into the rock and eat our lunch. It's tarnished when we look downright uncompetitive on national TV against peer institutions. It's tarnished going to a bowl and getting embarrassed, returning home and handing out more money and a ridiculous buyout to an App guy that couldn't get a HC job at any other peer institution ( Bush league style.) It's tarnished when there is a new excuse at the end of the year, then the middle of the year and now the beginning of the year, and it's always "next year." If we're committed to success, then demand it, and hold the line. Otherwise, just sink back to the FCS and save the cash.

Re: #TeamClark
All of this is fine and I agree. But there has to be a standard. Look, I don't expect to win the Sun Belt every year. I don't expect to win the East every year. But I do expect to compete for the East every year. Competing for a conference or divisional title has been the Appalachian standard for basically 20 years.AppOrange wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 11:52 amFor starters I am not in either camp (fire/not fire). Yes the conference is better, but honestly who expected to go 3-5 in conference last year? Who looked at this year's schedule and expected to go... maybe 4-4? Personally, I have no problem giving Clark another season. I do have a problem with the exceptions dropping to less than competing for the division title every year.

Just curious what game(s) we have looked "downright uncompetitive on national TV against peer institutions" ? We must not be watching the same games because we are literally nothing but COMPETITIVE, nobody can say we don't compete. We haven't been winning but we sure have been competing. Why else do you think almost every games has come down to the final play of the game to determine who wins? It is because we are competitive. Now, the first game against ULL in 2021 wan uncompetitive, the bowl game in 2021 against WKU was uncompetitive, but those are the only 2 games during Clarks tenure that were uncompetitive.GlassOnion wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 12:00 pmThe brand is being tarnished. The sky isn't falling and our brand really isn't being tarnished. I know App State football is the be all end all to many of us on the board (myself included) but the vast majority of the country has no idea how we are doing this year, none at all. When good things happen they hear us and think good things about us and otherwise they have no clue. I live in Florida and everyone that knows me knows where I went and who I root for and nobody knows how we are doing this year. They saw a close loss to UNC and that's about it. Our games, except the Tuesday night game, are on at times the SEC plays (and ACC) and most watch that and have no clue. We have record ticket sales, record giving to Yosef, sell out crowds, and great fan interest. There is no tarnishing of the brand currently. It can happen with sustained mediocrity, but I don't see any signs of it happening now. The sky is not falling and we will return to our dominance. I just hope it is sooner rather than later.

You just listed 2. Did I define the quantity? I don't believe I did. I'm OK with citing the entirety of SCs tenure.

Hardly. And it's pedal.mike87 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 12:27 pmBackpeddleGlassOnion wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 12:24 pmYou just listed 2. Did I define the quantity? I don't believe I did. I'm OK with citing the entirety of SCs tenure. We've spent entire swathes of games, looking completely lost and unprepared.t4pizza wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 12:14 pmJust curious what game(s) we have looked "downright uncompetitive on national TV against peer institutions" ? We must not be watching the same games because we are literally nothing but COMPETITIVE, nobody can say we don't compete. We haven't been winning but we sure have been competing. Why else do you think almost every games has come down to the final play of the game to determine who wins? It is because we are competitive. No one has eaten App State biscuits n gravy in the Rock, Clark is 19-4 at the Rock.
Every game has been competitive this year, what is wrong with you, stay sober and pay attention during the games.
App State football is a top 10 job outside of the multi million dollar jobs in the country, regardless of recent 6-6 record and what happens next 6 weeks. National Titles, P5 wins, SBC titles, Bowl wins, Head Coaches use it as a stepping stone job, that's why it will not be tarnished in the eyes of football people.

Re: #TeamClark
Agree. I'm not advocating for another year no matter what or just because he is our guy. The results have been competitive but obviously disappointing. In 2021, SC said "we lost 3 games and didn't win a championship. that's not the standard at App St". He knows it. We all know it. The standard isn't getting changed because we see out his contract. The team is playing hard and seem to be committed. We didn't lose a lot in portal after 6-6 which shows they stayed committed. If the wheels fall off, the team stops playing for him, etc then sure, evaluate if another year makes sense. What I've seen to date says, let him see it through. It may just be the fastest way to get results is returning a strong team and sticking together. Maybe not, but I would rather try it that way.appgrad95&97 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 12:04 pmAll of this is fine and I agree.
Yes the conference is better, but honestly who expected to go 3-5 in conference last year? Who looked at this year's schedule and expected to go... maybe 4-4? Personally, I have no problem giving Clark another season. I do have a problem with the exceptions dropping to less than competing for the division title every year.
