Players can get to the NFL from any school. The NFL will find you. McLeod had a solid year (9.5 TFL, 5.5 sacks) for Auburn and he was on the NFL radar before he transferred. They are well aware of him. It would not shock me if he is a preseason All-SEC pick next year, assuming he returns.ericsaid wrote: ↑Wed Nov 29, 2023 1:39 pmFact of the matter is that they can get to the NFL from App just as easily as they can elsewhere. He may have sacrificed tomorrow for today and I'd hope that these guys are able to see that.

Re: Keep Joey 2024 - NIL
I saw this on X per @GPHizerStats for the 2019 to 2022 time period, a comparison of G5 to P5 transfers vs G5 All-Conference Players in their Final Season:
1 yr G5 to P5 Transfers: 8.8% Drafted, 40.5% Undrafted w/Camp Invite, 50.7% No Minicamp Invite
G5 Final Season All-Conf Players: 26.4% Drafted, 49.9% Undrafted w/Camp Invite, 23.7% No Minicamp Invite
G5 All Conference players are 3x more likely to get drafted than the transfers into P5
G5 All-Conference players are 1.5x more likely to get drafted, a UDFA contract, or a rookie minicamp invite than the P5 transfers
In other words, the limited data suggests it is better to stay put and ball out rather than to transfer to a P5 school for a one year stay if you see yourself with NFL potential. So this could apply to Joey and anyone else who has one year of eligibility left.

Re: Keep Joey 2024 - NIL
Some guys can make more in College for 1 more year than risking it in the NFL.
Extreme example: Stetson Bennett could have tried his hand after the first natty in the NFL but wasnt guaranteed to make it. He was probably paid north of $1M to return to UGA and he did. Bet on himself and won the natty again. You're not promised the NFL, but if a college offers you $500K to go play, you probably bite. Colleges could start offering more money than being a draft pick soon.

Re: Keep Joey 2024 - NIL
This is all just speculation. And you bring up an important point when you mention loyalty. Who else was even recruiting Joey out of Diablo Valley CC? On top of that, NIL money DOES exist at App. It may not be as much as most P5 schools, but it's not like our guys aren't making a little money too.ericsaid wrote: ↑Wed Nov 29, 2023 1:37 pmWhy would Joey leave? If Frank stays and he has another mega year, he will have every opportunity at the league. He may lose that if he leaves and doesn't transition as well as he did into App. App showed him loyalty and love when no one else did and he's now, seemingly, taken that Mountaineer spirit in.
With one year of eligibility and his performance this year, I can't see him leaving for a one year rental elsewhere. Success isn't guaranteed anywhere but at least he's shown he can do it in Boone. Chase got NFL looks and that should open the door for Joey come Spring 2025.
As I've said before, NIL didn't really change anything, it just brought it into the light. App has always had to battle P5s for recruits and hedge against transfers. I believe App will continue to be able to find players who want to be Mountaineers despite what else anyone flashes in their face. Armanti Edwards could've transferred and sat a year, and there would've been plenty of bigger programs who would've wanted him and showered him with "gifts." But he didn't do that because he was black-and-gold through-and-through. Joey may be the same way.

Not the primary reason, but I was one of those.rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 29, 2023 1:36 pmIt's always been a matter of when, not if, that happens. I recall many that used this as their reasoning for the jump to FBS, so that when this does happen we aren't two rungs down.Saint3333 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 29, 2023 1:12 pmI dislike the NIL as written today.
10 years from now it may be difficult to continue to being a fan of a program outside the top 40. Or we could just fast forward and adopt the 1-AA moniker again.
Until then I'll enjoy weekend like the upcoming one, beat Troy.

This is a slipery slope. If you start you are going to need that money every year. This was a very bad idea from day one. Anyone who did not know NIL would turn out like this was either living in a cave or stupid, and there were plenty of those.

There's about 50 qbs already in the Portal. Thank goodness we are bowling- it will at least delay any type of decision for 3 more weeks.

Practically speaking, how does this work. Do coaches share a list of players that they are interested in and then companies with NIL money make offers or do coaches directly make financial offers based on the money they know they can access for new players?

Re: Keep Joey 2024 - NIL
NIL could have worked if the clueless NCAA and major college brains had set down and worked out a good plan - I never had any problem with the basic idea of NIL - Name, Image and Likeness - but it got way beyond NIL when no regulations were set - come here and we'll pay you $500k - that's not what I think of when I hear NIL

Re: Keep Joey 2024 - NIL
I would love to know how many players are making $500k or more. Can't be many. I have mixed feelings about NIL. I'm glad athletes can be compensated for their name, image, and likeness off the field, but pay for play bothers me. I have enjoyed watching #4 and all the others play this season, but I'd rather just say, "next man up," and enjoy watching them next season rather than get into some bidding war for players who's just after a "payday." But I'm over 50 and a traditionalist, so I'm probably in the minority. I'll gladly give to fund scholarships and if I had a business, I would gladly pay a player to promote it, but I'm not willing to give to a slush fund to buy players.

McLeod had three of those sacks in one game against a poor Arkansas team.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 29, 2023 2:05 pmPlayers can get to the NFL from any school. The NFL will find you. Maybe he is solid, maybe he isn't? Nate Johnson, Santana Hopper, and Jordan Favors all can make it to the NFL from App. Obviously they may have a plan to get their cake and eat it too, but whatever they want to do I guess.
Gone will be the days of the Boise State dominance of the early 2000's if this crap keeps up. College Football is dead and if this is how it's going to be, I will stop watching completely. It's not about competition, it's not about the game, it's not about loyalty. You recruit well and develop well yet get punished for it. Anti-competitive crap.

Re: Keep Joey 2024 - NIL
They aren't supposed to be involved, they aren't supposed to pay for play, they aren't supposed to contact guys still on rosters at other programs, yet it all happens.
NIL was a charade as is the College Football Playoff committee and how they choose to rank teams. It's all become a show and it's awful. Not that players shouldn't get paid or whatever but transfers had to sit out for a year because it would harm competition. Then not only did they allow transfers without a year of sitting, they allowed pay for play, or NIL, at the same time. They created Free Agency in one fell swoop and college football will be ruined within the next 8 years or so.
They may make a lot of money ruining it, but it will be ruined. The spirit of the game will be gone. They are pandering to probably 10 or so programs and the Walmart fans.

Re: Keep Joey 2024 - NIL
Right. And this is something the staff should be hammering home. If the league is your goal, you can put in the work, and they will find you. It's been shown, especially for App State linemen. If Joey can keep up his pace, he will be the next QB after App finally got a player in Brice to a professional league. Reputations matter in this racket.proasu89 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 29, 2023 2:15 pmAppStFan1 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 29, 2023 2:05 pmPlayers can get to the NFL from any school. The NFL will find you.
