So if we go 9-3 next year but don't win the Belt that's not good enough for an extension? Clark is exactly what we need at App. Loves the school and is doing fine.

If second is fine with you so be it. I guess “fine” is ok.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 16, 2023 8:03 pmSo if we go 9-3 next year but don't win the Belt that's not good enough for an extension? Clark is exactly what we need at App. Loves the school and is doing fine.

I’m stoked with the turn around this season and with the comparison to last season. I think that he should feel secure in his job at this point and the current contract probably does that. If he can get into a recruiting development cycle where every 3-4 years we have an elite team and then some decent seasons in between id be satisfied. I think that if he can mastermind a conference championship next year and keep the program relevant in the expanded playoff era we do have our long term guy. Is that lofty? Maybe, but I’m an insane app state fan.
I’m actually hopeful for next year.

Agree and also agree tonight is a time to be happy. It was a solid win when mental toughness won out. Let’s see how next year goes. Top teams lost excellent coaches and with roster turnover who knows what the next 6 months brings. That’s a big part of what coaches are paid the big bucks for. You know I agree with you, spacemonkey wrote: ↑Sat Dec 16, 2023 7:26 pmAnd please put some miss direction and design read/keepers for the quarterback when the ends are crashing. The biggest difference between this offense and our past offenses is we are very predictable on the run game. If we keep the back side end honest we would have more success running the ball. I know I sound like a broken record but please put something in the offense to keep them honest. We are going to have a talented offensive room next year, the coaches have to make the offense a little more complicated run game.
But coming into the game, our offense was 20th in the nation in Yards Per Game, 31st in Yards per play and 15th in offensive TD's/20th in scoring offense

App St #1 in attendance rate (vs. seating capacity) this year. This is per College Football Report twitter.

Celebrate tonight. Back to work tomorrow. We have holes to fill if we are going to regain our place at the top of the Conference.

This was a good second half of the season. Congratulations to the team for a bowl win against a conference champion. 2024 is supposed to be the year. I look forward to seeing what next year brings.

Re: #TeamClark
I think it is difficult to set expectations in this era of college football until April/May given nil and todays players wanting to play yesterday and not wait. As of today, on paper with what we currently got, we look pretty good. We definitely have OL, LB, secondary and DL holes to fill...we may have numbers and depth...but we still need better players in all 4 areas so the rotations in and out do not drop off. If some of the young guys that did not play as much or at all can fulfill those rolls on OL great...but if I am TeamClark...that is where I am spending time in the portal. Although I am optimistic today, my thoughts on 2024 and expectations will evolve after spring practice. Crazy era of college football.
It's great to be a mountaineer today.

Re: #TeamClark
There were glaring examples this year across college football showing that you can't just plug and play (and win) with the portal- see Colorado. The folks who started the whole fire Clark and the coaches are probably the same ones who said that about Satt, Roof, etc. Some seem to think that firing a guy or even a staff and replacing them will be both easy and seamless. Some people have lived under a ridiculous expectation that App State Football should win the Belt and at least 10 games every single season. It's at the point now when you watch and see a player get ripped for a dumb play you wonder if he will get butt hurt and transfer. If a good player doesn't get the playing time he expects will he leave? If a collective doesn't pony up big money will the star player go elsewhere for the bag? Gone are the days when a coach has a young team that goes 8-4 and he can plan on having a certain percentage of his roster return. Now he has no idea.

Re: #TeamClark
You are right and that sucks. I am not a fan at all of the transfer portal. But this is college football today. Dealing with these issues are now part of a coaches job. It is what they are paid for. Not to be glib at all, but 60 years ago coaches had to figure out how to deal with integration. Times change and keeping up with a changing world is a part of everyone's job.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 8:13 amThere were glaring examples this year across college football showing that you can't just plug and play (and win) with the portal- see Colorado. Re: #TeamClark
No. Only championships accetable here. Clark has had 3, 4, 6 and 5 losses. (3 was during covid and we didnt play a p5) he has 0 conference titles.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 16, 2023 8:03 pmSo if we go 9-3 next year but don't win the Belt that's not good enough for an extension? Just because he turned around a 3-4 season to finish 9-5 is by no means ok. What if we had staryed 8-1 then went 9-5?
None of clarks seasons have been great...but all of them have been bare bones acceptable for down years (except 2022. That was a disaster)

I believe it will take a conference championship to earn an extension next year. Frankly I have been told as much . Anyway , it’s recruiting time .

I have given credit for how well this team under Clark turned things around. But do you have any idea how many asterisks should be added to your post?DenverOfTheEast wrote: ↑Sat Dec 16, 2023 7:03 pmJust over here hanging out in the rain, winning....another BOWL!
#TEAMCLARK
4 years as the Boss:
3 Bowl wins
winning 66% of his games
2 SBC east Titles
3 Top 25 wins!
Best G5 coach in America!!
Three bowl wins, I guess that's true. But '19 was Drink's team. '20 was verses a N. Texas team that but for COVID would not have been bowl eligible. Yesterday was a very good bowl win.
Winning 66% of his games is true. It is also true that a huge number of his wins were against FCS schools or teams that ended their seasons with loosing records. Still very few wins against winning teams.
And yes we won the East this year, but only technically. JMU was the best team in the division.
A third of those top 25 wins was against a wildly overrated A&M team (which ended its season with a loosing record).
If context matters when Clark is criticized, it should matter when he's called "the best G5 coach in America".
I give credit to him for the turnaround and look forward to him coaching in 2024.
