I don’t disagree with the question as much as the timing. Asking him that question on Day 1 of his tenure, in front of his new bosses, members of the BoT and a fanbase that is looking for a reason to get excited was poor timing and created a sense of awkwardness in the room. Especially for a guy that the fanbase is getting to know.T-Dog wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 10:37 pmGood. They need to feel uncomfortable when asked a question every once in a while. I learned that as a reporter, coaches shouldn't be your friends. I was at Steve Behr's funeral and saw who and who wasn't there. At the end of the day, you're just a reporter to them. So reporters should hold powerful people accountable. Even if you sound dumb asking a question.

Re: Dowell Loggains
Reporters should ask hard questions. We as fans all wonder how long he will be here. I was curious about his response when the question was asked. You ask questions like that (one that someone wouldn't expect) to get a genuine response. To gauge how sincere someone is. I think he answered it as good as he could have, especially how nervous he was. I don't ever want ANY coach to come here and be comfortable. I want them to be ready to give responses to rough situations. The question was much better than the softball questions that were lobbed at Clark for 5 years.

Some can disagree...even the person who asked the question can disagree with my opinion....free world..I just disagreed with timing. It came across that we have commitment relationship issues with our girlfriend breaking up with us in the past on the first day we meet her
With that said, the press should not necessarily be "friends" with coaches...if you want to ask hard questions after the game, practice about play calling, etc. or a presser about a player leaving the program, suspended... whatever....ask the question.
I thought this question is better served after we go 13-1..when the coach may be coveted by other programs....or even if 13-1 and there are no rumors.
If we are being real, we are a stepping stone program until we are not (not sure I ever see that not happening). I believed that even on Day 1 when Clark was hired. Maybe it is the greedy bastard in me, however, I see it hard to say No when you are offered $3 million plus to go to another job.
It is what it is....there will be more great and not so great questions asked by the media. Thankful for what the press does ..as it is not a career for me.

Re: Dowell Loggains
It's up to the media to ask tough questions. The one in question was a follow-up, and not a stupid one, as I believe Coulson was probably asking for a sidebar piece talking about coaching turnover.
Like Todd said, they didn't do this with Clark -- especially Coulson, who one could argue was Clark's Bagdhad Bob, and even then Clark would get annoyed at the softballs. I'm not sure Clark was capable of answering a tough question, not because he didn't have the capacity. They just never asked. Never.

That would have been a comfortable lie for us, but I guess he's not that good. He's here to win a bunch of games and move up. That's OK.APPdiesel wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 8:45 amNo it isn’t. “I want to put down roots. I want to affect players, this school, and this community for as long as I possibly can. I think he wanted to be a head coach and knows this is a good place to do so. He's been an OC in the NFL and SEC for 12 years so I'd imagine he has plenty of money in the bank to fall back on.Coltrane86 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 11:56 pmHe mentioned that he “would have made a lot more money staying at SC, believe that”, and I do believe that. 1. Accidentally slipped that he saw us as the stepping stone and it is worth the pay cut to risk it.
Or 2. Knew he would move again if he didn’t find a HC spot and as he said was blessed that this worked out for him and his family.
At his age with that big of a family and his apparent belief in Gods plan, he could very well have them and some stability and roots at the top of the list. If this evolves into reality and he is winning, we could have ourselves who we have all been wanting.

Re: Dowell Loggains
Comfortable lie, maybe. Maybe not. I don’t know what Dowell wants for his life. But we also had a 25 page thread where a common theme was “we don’t want a one and done coach”. He couldn’t scored points with the fans but missed the opportunity.BallantyneApp wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 8:52 amThat would have been a comfortable lie for us, but I guess he's not that good. Re: Dowell Loggains
You hit the nail on the head with this...... He wants to be a head coach and KNEW this was the place to start that path. The exposure he will get here will be better than at other g5 schools. He has seen that Satterfield got a job offer by doing well and so did Drink. App State football is still relevant. The brand is still relevant. Looks like Loggains knows this and singled us out to be his launchpad.JTApps1 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 8:59 amI think he wanted to be a head coach and knows this is a good place to do so. Re: Dowell Loggains
I like the tough questions. Shawn Clark rarely got tough questions and when he did I don't think he handled them well. It was always the same spiel and it got old and tired with me. I want to hear a coach respond in ways that are not boring and tough questions cause that. It doesn't hurt for coaches to have to defend themselves occasionally. I think Coach Loggains handled it well.

I have more of an issue dealing with their will never be another Armanti like tenure. 1-2 years is the max of a good player and for the most part we won't have them to start out of HS.

Perfectly fair question to ask in front of his boss as well, I'd be disappointed if he didn't get that question during the interview process so in a way he should have been well prepared to give a similar response.

I welcome journalism in all media settings, would be refreshing if we had more people asking tough questions of substance in all phases of life; politics, sports, AND science.

Yeah it does suck but I just don’t know how you control it. If we’re keeping it honest, kids grow up dreaming of playing in the P4 environments you see on TV on Saturday nights. And I don’t love the idea of keeping them from that just so I can enjoy myself watching App on Saturday’s. But at the same time, feels like the Apps of the sport shouldn’t be hung out to dry after finding and developing those guys.
I’d like to say the revenue sharing model that’s coming next year will alleviate some of this, but those conferences and schools just have so much more revenue to share. Def a tough spot to be in.

I also keep seeing folks complaining about “name dropping”. Guys, it’s called recruiting from the podium. A common tactic used by guys who have the cache to do it. Just relax and give the guy a chance. Regardless of what you’ve talked yourself into; by and large we all gave Clark his fair chance. Time for you guys to do the same. We’re all one team here.

The 2025 season --
The Biggest game of this guys life and for the future of Doug Gillin career will be at Bank of America Stadium against a new coach and the Charlotte 49ers !!!!
The drama that will unfold that day has got me on the edge of seat right now sipping coffee.
Coach D or Coach Log? gotta figure out which way to go with that one.....
His first 4 games Charlotte, Boise State, Non D1 and Oregon State --
I Feel like Billy the Kid in Young Guns 'well that's the test of all test, I'm in'. #Classic
Good luck!!!

Boone is one of those places you either love it or hate it. It is not for everyone. Going to school and living in a place are different. I also believe what concerns most people is the level of change.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 6:55 amI don’t think the term “stepping stone” is close to relevant anymore since players use schools the same way now. Duke just had (for them) a great year and their quarterback still entered the Portal. I think it’s going to be extremely difficult for the better G5’s to string together big years. If we are able to land great recruiting classes is the staff compelled to playing the good younger guys to keep them happy- if they are as good as older guys? If we have a 11-2 type season (winning the Belt) that probably includes having several top performers and it also probably includes mass exodus via the Free Agent Portal. Start over again. I don’t know how much the coach is getting paid and whatever it is it’s far more than I or probably most of us will make but it’s all relative. In the coaching world a one time 11-2 G5 season equals offers that can’t be matched in Boone.
