News Flash.....college football is in deep peril...do not kid yourself.....if something isn't done about NIL....it will suicide itself from its potential. Look at college basketball and what the ONE & DONE has done there....football requires so much more than basketball....think about it.
KICK ASS!!!

.Especially at a program like ours with so many older alumni season ticket holders. If they lose enthusiasm the program could suffer quickly.CornCobPipes wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2025 2:03 pmNews Flash.....college football is in deep peril...do not kid yourself.....if something isn't done about NIL....it will suicide itself from its potential. Re: Traditions, rivalries, etc.
Just like the NCAA thought that broadcasting more games would lead to people not attending games NIL is not the problem people think it is. The money has always changed hands, the fact that it is legal people are seeing just how much money has been changing hands. The portal is the great equalizer. Some people are focusing so much on what they are losing and not what they are gaining. App will lose players that they never lost before, but they will gain players that they would never would have playing here. The schools that will be most successful in this new landscape will not be the ones that have the most money, it will be the ones that are most creative with what they have. Appalachian will be just fine. If Appalachian was not special, it would never have beaten Michigan or Texas A&M. The fact that it found a way with the old rules it will find a way with the new rules. What we are really seeing is a new era in college football.CornCobPipes wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2025 2:03 pmNews Flash.....college football is in deep peril...do not kid yourself.....if something isn't done about NIL....it will suicide itself from its potential. I expect Appalachian to be in the conversation if not in the game.

There will be both a correlation and causation between amount of money and success of the field.

Rivalries for the fans will not change and that's what most of us see but the hate that drives player performance in those rivalry games can't help but change. It won't be the same for guys who, in the past, might have lined up against the same guy for 4 years. It's that familiarity and strong personal rivalry that may change what fans see on the field. Though i hope not, there may be a little less excitement at those games. I love change but what's happening in college sports, particularly football and basketball is nauseating.

Re: Traditions, rivalries, etc.
Was less of an idea than something that was forced to occur because of what money has done to college athletics. ESPN, all television really, is more to blame than we have discussed recently. I don't think it will kill rivalries, as we fans drive that, but it will be different. We may see a reduction in fan loyalty, if we haven't already, as coach and player loyalty continue to deteriorate.

I was in Greenville recently and ate at a restaurant that encouraged people to write messages on the wall (so and so ate here, and that sort). I wrote "Furman still sucks".

Actually, I think that students have more loyalty to their school now than they did in the 80's at Appalachian. Then you hardly saw anyone wearing school colors around campus and even at games. Now students seem to wear clothes with App State on them everywhere. The students are proud of the fact that they go to Appalachian. Now most of them it is their first choice, not their backup school.goapps93 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 9:20 amWas less of an idea than something that was forced to occur because of what money has done to college athletics. To be an Appalachian State student you have to have a certain state of mind that keeps you at Appalachian. The ones that do not find somewhere else to go. I believe the same is true of Athletes as well. There are some things that money cannot buy.
