Re: App Transfer Portal 2025 - OUT
We do seem to have a higher percentage of transfers transferring "up" in the portal compared to our peers. But that could also mean others have been better at retaining their top 10 players.
I hope your thoughts are correct vs. the latter.

Re: App Transfer Portal 2025 - OUT
I am curious. Is Joey expected to be the starter? I have no clue on UCLA depth chart. I realize the past decade has not been what they have expected, however, they typically have a decent QB.AppState89 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2025 8:12 amUCLA it is.....hope he kicks A$$ out there with Joey.311neers wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 12:13 pmUCLA to team up with JoeyCali.

Joey appears to be the front-runner based on his seniority and experience. Having someone familiar to help learn the system is only going to help both of them.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2025 8:26 amI am curious. Is Joey expected to be the starter? Last year, UCLA had a quarterback room consisting of three seniors, one redshirt sophomore, one redshirt freshman, and three freshmen. With the redshirt sophomore transferring to Maryland, Joey’s competition now includes one redshirt sophomore and three likely redshirt freshmen. Of course, pending any surprise years like Joey and Kaedin got. I don't follow UCLA at all so I am just going based on the depth chart from last year.
It’s worth noting that most of the competition seems to lean toward being dual-threat quarterbacks. While Joey has shown the ability to run, he doesn’t fit the mold of a true dual-threat QB. Based on their recruiting, it seems UCLA may be shifting toward a more mobile quarterback style (uncertain what they had last year), and Joey could serve as a solid bridge option while the younger players adjust to the college game.

I don't think we ran Joey enough. If he starts I'm more likely to watch a game or two to see how they utilize him.

On3 Sports is reporting that Kaedin Robinson has signed with UCLA and will team up with his former App State QB Joey Aguilar.
It will be interesting to see how they do working together in LA next season. KRob reportedly had offers from Auburn, USC, UCLA, Michigan and others.

A lot of talent to have had our season end the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Re: App Transfer Portal 2025 - OUT
I’ve said before offense was not the issue. If we had an average defense this season, we’d have won 9 games. The question is, did we not have talent on the D side of the ball or was the coaching just terrible? Or both?

I get what you're saying and agree...but our season was over well before that. South Alabama game. All that talent and got housed at home.

Re: App Transfer Portal 2025 - OUT
Maybe a combination of both. My comment is based upon the DJ Smith related podcast that had several former player's having a conversation about State of the program so to speak. So, I am just going on what they appeared to see when watching games. So, one can take that for what it may be worth.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2025 9:04 amI’ve said before offense was not the issue. DJ was not able to actually make the podcast as he got delayed due to a recruiting dinner. As such, he was not part of the commentary made on the podcast.

Re: App Transfer Portal 2025 - OUT
We can agree to disagree, but I see it slightly different. Aside from the obligatory 1st possession TDs, the D was average.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2025 9:04 amI’ve said before offense was not the issue. Our O though struggled to move ball and when we did, the red zone was like kryptonite. Only 25 TDs on 46 trips. 13 times came up with a goose egg.
For the season, 22 total points in 1st quarter.
It seemed to me, anytime the D came up with a big stop the O immediately gave it back to opponent whether it be 3 and out or Turnover. No rest for D.
Now to your point, the D did not help bail out the O when those turnovers occurred, leading to a lot of opponent scores.

I 100% agree. How many times did he bootleg around after a handoff and there were zero defenders protecting the backside? They only time he kept it was early in the Coastal game and it worked well. No idea why Ponce stopped calling it that game and the rest of the year.

Re: App Transfer Portal 2025 - OUT
I hope 4 and 2 both have excellent years. At the end of the day, it indirectly may help App St given we were the stop before the Power Conference.
UCLA has Penn State, Ohio State and Indiana on their schedule. Seems weird putting Indiana football as a tough game. Will be interesting to see how they do. OOC schedule does not look too bad..

Perhaps we start a top-level topic similar to "Apps in the Pros" called "Apps in the SEC and BIG".BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2025 12:26 pmI hope 4 and 2 both have excellent years. At the end of the day, it indirectly may help App St given we were the stop before the Power Conference.

Re: App Transfer Portal 2025 - OUT
Seems like this conversation should be else where….. but D had several significant injuries over first three games with as many 7 key players out….. it was so bad that they ended up changing the scheme because we could field enough LB’s….. and during that part of the season, the virtually new OL was trying to figure out how to play together and run block…. this took several games.. it was in these games that Joey pressed to create some plays and threw several ints. culminating in the Marshall game… then the OL figured out run blocking then A. Marshall stepped up. None of these things creates a 9 or 10 win season.
