Southern Miss in 2014

USM to host Alcorn, Appalachian State in football in 2014

Southern Miss announced Thursday that Alcorn State and Appalachian State will be part of the 2014 home football schedule.

The Golden Eagles are scheduled to play at Mississippi State on Aug. 30, 2014, and at Alabama on Sept. 13.

The Golden Eagles will host Alcorn State on Sept. 6 at M.M. Roberts Stadium and host Appalachian State on Sept. 20.

The Golden Eagles also announced that the Brigham Young game, originally scheduled at BYU during the 2014 season, will be pushed back to a later date.

"I'm very pleased with the balance we've been able to achieve with our 2014 schedule," Southern Miss Director of Athletics Bill McGillis said in a news release. "Obviously, it will be highly competitive with a blend of quality opponents, including the defending national champions in Alabama, in-state games with Mississippi State and Alcorn State and an emerging FBS program in Appalachian State. The scheduling of six home games was our most important objective in 2014, and I'm excited for our fans, coaches and team that we were able to make that happen."

Alcorn State, a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, makes its second trip to Hattiesburg. Southern Miss won the first meeting 52-0 in 2009.

USM and Applachian State have played only once before -- on Dec. 1, 1937 -- in Gulfport. USM won the game 7-0.

The Conference USA portion of the schedule will be released in early 201

This was posted on another thread, but I agree with you that it deserves its own thread.

So Miss is a program with tremendous tradition and is a GREAT add for a HOME and HOME... its going to be a special, special Saturday in Boone when Southern Miss comes to town. AWESOME!!! This is the kind of opponent that I had hoped would be part of our future scheduling. Go App!

I don't think this is correct. I believe App played So. Miss. in a Bowl game in 1938, which So. Miss. won 7 - 3. This touchdown was THE ONLY POINTS SCORED AGAINST THE MOUNTAINEERS THE ENTIRE SEASON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o
The 1938 season saw App unscored on & undefeated in the regular season. Coach was Kidd Brewer hisself.

All of that did happen. In 1937. ;)

OK, sounds good. Thanks.

I thought I was wrong once before, but I was mistaken.

Well if that's true then CollegeFootballDataWarehouse.com sure has it messed up.

http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/di ... esults.php

They show Elon beating us in 1938.
But look at the 1937 season. A loss to Emory & Henry, unknown location, unknown date?
Why would it be so unknown?
Plus shows the SoMiss score as 7-0 in evidently the first " Doll and Toy Charity Game ".
Someone needs to research that Emory & Henry game and get the facts straight.

The guy at the CFDW has a few old media guides or something that he uses for early years. I emailed him a couple years ago with a mention about the discrepancies between the website and App media guide and he responded with a resounding "Whatever".

It's also interesting to note that the official NCAA record book lists App with a different all-time record as well.

At the start of the 2013 season the App media guide has 564-313-28 while the NCAA has 565-311-29. It's pretty much impossible to find out where the differences occur, though I'm guessing it has to do with record keeping back in the day.

Southern Mississippi has not won a game in about 30 tries or more. Boy it would be bad if we are the victims of ending their streak next year.

I love the scheduling of Old Dominion and Southern Miss for home and homes! Well done, App schedulers!

I can only hope the home and home with the MAC team in 2016/2017 is just as good. Based on the schedules that have already been released, it looks as though Akron, Ball State, Northern Illinois and Ohio would be the top candidates. Ohio would be my top choice considering that it's the closest MAC school to Boone and they have good name recognition.

Any word on which P5 schools we'll be playing in 2015, 2016 and 2017?

So the winner of these games can call themselves The King of the Rock!

Does Sean Connery do the intro at USM's stadium in Hattiesburg as well?

The Emory and Henry listing is a mistake. The last regular season game was vs Catawba whom the ASTC team beat 6-0 in Hickory. This has been published in the ASU Media guide for at least two decades.

Emory and Henry does not have a listing in the College Football Data Warehouse in either DII or NAIA.

I am going to try to contact Foootball Data Warehouse and question that Emory and Henry game.
Had always been told we had a team that was undefeated and unscored on and that Emory and Henry game looks very odd and seems to be incorrect. They do not even have a date for the game or location listed. Unless it was maybe a North State Conference Championship game. If anyone has any proof or information, let me know.
