The Mountaineers traveled to the tidewaters of Virginia to take on ODU for their homecoming. Teams used to schedule cupcakes for homecoming to make sure of a victory for the crowd. Cupcake or not, App was unable to spoil their day and allowed ODU to celebrate a homecoming victory 24-21.
The Good-
AJ Swann came in off the bench in the 4th quarter down 24-7. He proceeded to rally the offense and went 12-16 for 2 TDs and simply ran out of time. Swann moves the offense much better than any other option we have seen on the year and should have cemented himself as QB1
Zyeir Gamble- led the defense with 13 tackles, had 2 passes defended and a key interception in the 4th that took would be points off the board and kept us in the game.
Special Teams- We did not attempt any silly returns from deep in our endzone and our coverage teams did a good job off defending punt and kick off returns. We punted well and made all our extra points. This unit is shaping up very nicely.
The Bad-
JJ Kohl- Coming into the game he had not thrown an interception; he threw 2 in the game including one in the end zone. He struggled to move the offense and on a big 3 and 1 in the second half, he sheepishly slid and came up short of the first down.
The Defense- Herd to win too many games when you give up 459 yards of offense. The good news is that the bend but don't brake mantra held true and they only gave up 24 points which should be enough for us to win.
Play calling- while our run game seemed to work when we ran the ball, we didn't do it much at all. Dubinion had a 5.7 yard per rush average but only got 9 carries. We threw the ball 54 times with only 18 rushes. While we were behind a lot in the game, we still needed to rush the ball more than we did.
The Ugly-
Sadly, we are how we play and after 8 games that is a sloppy undisciplined football team that turns the ball over. Although we only had 7 penalties for 80 yards, they were very poorly timed penalties. A roughing the passer/targeting penalty negated an interception that would have had us in very good field position. An offensive pass interference negated a touchdown to Dalton Stroman. Take those to penalties away, we win the game and I haven't even discussed the 2 interceptions one of which was in the endzone. App has more turnovers, fumbles or interceptions, in and around our own goal line then I care to remember. These turnovers are especially damaging because they directly take points off the board.
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly- ODU

Re: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly- ODU
Good - KOs, FGs...
Bad - QB play through 3Qs
Ugly- play calling during first 3Qs. 7 has to touch ball more than10 times as a runner (unless hurt)... And 17 has a nice deep ball . Should have used it to try to get 8 out of the box
