Homecoming Leaf Lookers...

Unread post by dontplay90 » Thu Oct 04, 2012 3:57 pm

I could have placed this in the General Discussion folder, but with Homecoming this weekend, I thought Football would possibly work better!

According to our own ASU Biology Department, looks like this week/weekend could be peak for the area right around Boone: http://biology.appstate.edu/biology/fal ... h-carolina

If the weather holds out, a run up NC-194 or down US-19 should be outstanding this weekend!

Do any of you locals have anything better to add? I am guessing from Hickory.

Leaves are no where near peak yet.
There are several asu live web cams and high country web cams you can look at live and see...

Looks like an early peak this year but won't be this weekend from what I am seeing.

Leaves are peaking at Grandfather. Might be another week for Boone.

Yeah, having grown up in Boone, my general rule of thumb is plan for the 15th of October... Ashe County a few days earlier.

My bad... I'm at Grandfather now and it's pretty much peak. It's the worst peak I've seen in a while though.

Not sure how accurate it is, but a rule of thumb I've always used is:

a 1,000 foot drop in elevation equals one week delay for leaf turning.

So Mt. Mitchell should peak about 5-7 days before Grandfather Mtn. The Hickory area should be about 2 or 2.5 weeks after Grandfather, and so on down to the Charlotte area.

I drove by Grandfather mt.,both parkway & 105 sides today(10/6).Very close to peak conditions above 4000ft.Maples very strong above 3500ft.Leaves should be very nice in Boone/B.R. area by next weekend.(How many points do you get for making Floridians jump off the viaduct ?)
