I was with a group of friends at the Southern Conference tourney in Asheville when ASU's AD at the time, Jim Garner, announced a presser to name and introduce our new head football coach. We were all still in mourning over the loss of Sparky Woods (and angry at him because he'd made it pretty clear that he couldn't wait to get out of Boone). With Sparky, it was love-hate. But Jim Garner made it easy for fans to attend the presser at the Civic Center and a "meet and greet" a short walk away at Bill Stanley's BBQ and Bluegrass Club.

Garner introduced Jerry Moore with a big build-up and a lot of hype and then Moore was given an opportunity to speak. He was soft-spoken, humble and, frankly, left all in my group scratching our heads and thinking..."Oh great, another slow-talking Texan wearing cowboy boots." It was an inside Appalachian joke at the time--because Garner always wore cowboy boots. Always. Anyway, we all thought that our football program was going to the dogs by going from Woods to Moore. Six months later, 40 to 50 players had left the program. Some transferred to other programs. Some just quit the football team, but stayed in school. Some just dropped out of college and went back home. We thought the program was on its deathbed.

And then Moore's first ASU team beat Wake Forest in only his second game as our head coach. And all was well. Sparky who?

It's time to rename Kidd Brewer Stadium to someone a bit more current....I suggest Jerry Moore Stadium. It's not like Kidd Brewer is a treasured name...it was Conrad Stadium when I was in school.

Something needs to be done. I would support changing the name to Jerry Moore Stadium.

Coach Brewer was a great coach and coached the unscored upon regular season 1937 squad, but he was only here for only 4 seasons and even did an 18 month stint in prison for price fixing. Coach Moore is a class act with a much stronger resume. JERRY MOORE STADIUM seems appropriate.

The Brewer family gave a lot of money (for the time), and naming the stadium after Kidd Brewer was a way to show appreciation. We could hyphenate the stadium name, like Dowdy-Ficklin, Jordan-Hare, Bryant-Denny...etc. Heck, I was past my freshman year before I learned KBS was named after just one person.

I became a believer in Moore, when during his first press conference, he was asked what was the first thing he needed to do with the program, without hesitation, and in a determined voice, he said ' we have to stop being the minor league program for South Carolina". I know its been only 2 years plus since he was forced out, but I think its time for both sides to put any ill feelings aside, and to properly honor Moore, if not in renaming the stadium then atleast a statue out front, and an honorary suite for him and his family to watch games for the rest of his life.

Can't think of a better reason to change. Prison?

IMO
It is not up to the university it is up to Margaret and Jerry. Interestingly enough JM spent more time talking about FURMAN at the SC/HOF induction than he did ASU.

All the things mentioned and all the accolades hoped for are ready for the presentation in essence. Timing is the only issue. .....and we are not waiting on the University or the Athletic Department.
Go APPS!

If what your saying is true, that's kinda sad for Moore to still hold that deep of a grudge after all this time. He deserves to be honored every day at the University in terms of a statue, renaming the stadium etc. How many people have the opportunity in their lifetime to be honored and revered by an entire University? Hope someday we can honor him the proper way.

My point of emphasis is, I really don't care who's fault it its, god knows I don't ever want to have that debate again, but instead every effort of both sides should be made to put an end to any lingering bad blood, so we can honor Moore the way he deserves, bottom line is he is an icon of the University, I wish we could honor him as such.

We could honor him the first game of the season if he's willing. The ball is squarely in his court.

Great honor, congrats Coach.

How do we know the ball is in his court. I talked with Coach at the NCSHOF a few weeks ago - he said he has not been contacted by anyone in the athletic dept. since Dec. 2012. Just courious how one knows this.

Thought his prison stint was common knowledge.

I'm not sure Jerry could swallow his pride long enough to shake Cobbs hand. I'm not sure Jerry is ready to admit that he knew it was his last year He is deserving to be honored at our school and if we have not contacted him it's time. The new Chancellor could easily. No dirty laundry there. And if Jerry really cares about App then he will do what's best for us and reciprocate the affection and admiration we've given him for all these years. This will just linger until we are all dead if the hatchet isn't buried.

Me either but as you can already see it will never go away. Many have no intention of letting it die. If people really wanted it to die this post would not have turned in the direction it did.
