Condition of field @ KBS

Unread post by McLeansvilleAppFan » Sun Oct 21, 2012 12:32 pm

Is the field turf holding up? I know there is some filler material as part of the field, and I was noticing it getting kicked up on a Wofford run, and this was on GoASU, which is not exactly HD res.

At the Montana game I was at in person I noticed some areas where the "grass" looked to be missing. It might have been an area where the blades were bent a certain way, but the black filler material was easy to spot and had it been real grass it would have looked like a dead spot of grass. I also noticed that after a FG/PAT attempt in the south side, that a crew ran out onto the field and threw down some filler material as if to patch a worn spot that had been over used either for the PAT attempts or for Field Hockey, and maybe this spot serves both sports for some reason as a major spot of wear and over use.

This is year two of about 6 or 7 of it's life span. Correct?

Thomas,

I was talking to friends before the game about the same thing. There's an awful lot of black rubber showing on our field. Every field I see from other schools on tv is better looking "green-wise" than ours. It actually looks worse than the old turf they replaced to my old eyes.

if i am remembering correctly, most filler is green. We used black filler to satisfy those MMB posters screaming for black turf. I think it is a nice compromise.

So if I hear you correctly, the field is fine and wearing normal, and the filler contrast is making the field less than green, but that is not a problem of wear.

Our filler is black and there's a ton of it. Kicking that stuff up should be normal as long as there's plenty of filler in the turf. That filler is actually designed to mimic grass fields and provide a cushion.

The filler I am not as worried about, and I knew it was there for safety and a better experience.

But all the back and forth on this does not explain why someone went out with a hand full of the black filler and put it down immediately after the FG. Or is that normal with this sort of turf?

I can tell you that the stuff gets into cleats and jerseys and such with a vengeance. When our son played soccer on similar turf, the players would dump the stuff out of their cleats at the end of the game. We used to laugh and say we could carpet our house with the stuff ... even after he'd dumped most of it back on the field.

As a retired Turf Manager, let me offer some insight about the turf. The black infill is crumb rubber ie ground tires and other black rubber. It is there for cushioning to mimic real turf. As far as green infill that has just been developed recently and will be used more prominently in artifical turf. The black you see flying on certain plays is a result of the new field and the very large amount that is put in new fields. There are many tons of the rubber used on a new field. This is completely normal and has nothing to do with field color.

I believe we had the turf installers put more rubber down than what they normally do to make it a faster field. I know this was the case with our old turf so I would imagine the same is true for this field.

The infill also migrates when it's being played on. I would guess that the buckets of pellets were due to the amount of play occurring in certain sections due to Wofford's offensive style and our insistency of running up the middle on 1st down  .
