WR shakeup for Saturday
Re: WR shakeup for Saturday
Taylor's arm is stronger than we thought, he can probably throw it 60-65 yds. Someone mention Price, I didn't think at the time his dismissal would have this kind of negative effect on the wr corp, but now its clear, that he probably was the one player on the entire team, we could ill afford to lose. Shame, he not only screwed himself and his future shot at the NFL, but he really hurt the program going forward, atleast in the near future.

Re: WR shakeup for Saturday
I don't disagree that you play your best players under normal circumstances. But we don't have normal circumstances. We are not playing for a playoff berth and we are not playing for a bowl berth and we have too many FCS and inexperienced FBS type recruits to realistically think that we can win the conference championship so what is there to play for other than for the future? I'm not the coach and I don't see these guys in practice so I am going by what I hear from those that have. If you make a decision to redshirt Meadors in the beginning of the season then why change your mind now? No one is injured so does it make since to play him now for possibly five targets per game from here on out.EastHallApp wrote:What's not common-sense about playing your best players, if that's what they are? Again, it's not like playing these guys will hold them back for next year. If anything, they'll likely be better for the experience. It just means they won't be around for 2018. By which time we'll have had four recruiting classes to bring in more receivers - which will be easier to do if we're winning games and showcasing an effective passing game, BTW - not to mention the 2-4 WRs who we are already redshirting this year.
ETA: Also, does it really make sense to have 5-6 WRs in the same class anyway? I would argue that, especially given how few quality WR options we have among the upperclassmen, it makes perfect sense to balance out the classes a bit by playing about half the freshmen and redshirting the rest.

Let's flip that around a bit - if you don't think that guys like Beathard and Sumler are the kinds of players who can get us to a bowl game in 2015, then really how does starting them advance the long-term goals of the program?AppSt94 wrote:I don't disagree that you play your best players under normal circumstances. I am largely on board with the idea that this year is essentially a dress rehearsal. But that doesn't mean it's a total throwaway year. Winning at least enough to show that we're not that far off will make everything easier - recruiting, fundraising, ticket sales, getting onto actual TV, etc.

Bottom line if Scott doesn't start at least getting competitive this year and start winning next year he won't even be around for these redshirts senior year. I say based on what I saw last Sat. play the best you have regardless.

Sorry - disagree totally - here we go talking about firing Satterfield 2-3 years down the road - Some of you guys are consumed with firing people ---MJ1988 wrote:roachgone wrote:If I'm Scott and I have redshirts that are better than who is playing, I'm gonna play them and worry about 4 yrs. from now later. Actually I think that all these people wanting to fire the coach is just IGGreer using different aliases.WVAPPeer wrote:Sorry - disagree totally - here we go talking about firing Satterfield 2-3 years down the road - Some of you guys are consumed with firing people ---MJ1988 wrote:roachgone wrote:If I'm Scott and I have redshirts that are better than who is playing, I'm gonna play them and worry about 4 yrs. from now later. Re: WR shakeup for Saturday
Fair points but I will say I am no more confident that guys like Meadors and Barbour (as Sophomores) can get us to a bowl game than I am in Beathard and Sumler. We have too many areas of opportunity that won't begin to be rectified until all of the FCS talent is gone and we are playing with 85 FBS players.EastHallApp wrote:

Re: WR shakeup for Saturday
To be fair to all involved, I will be very surprised to see Meadors on the field, this week or any other, this year. He was shirted for a variety of reasons but the one that I was told was the deciding factor was that he did not grasp the offense very well and he desperately needed conditioning. If what I was told is true, then I don't see both of those changing within 5 weeks and now you're burning a year for what purpose? To appease us? That's not very smart in the long run. I want to win each week as much as anyone, but is WR the problem? No doubt our WR play needs to improve, but on offense I think the OL and QB play needs more attention. Lamb has been overthrowing and no, its not that the WR is "too slow". Not in 15 years of coaching and many years of playing have I heard that excuse. That's why you practice, throw where your guys are supposed to be, not where a Deion Sanders would be. Yes, Tacoi has never been 100% healthy, but he is, by far, the fastest guy on the team, and he got overthrown (but our QB was on the move because of pressure). I don't mean to sound like a know-it-all, because I'm far from it, but I have been in this game for a long long time, so here goes: Just because a highly-rated and athletic recruit signs with your team, it doesn't automatically make him "the answer". Some kids take a little longer than others. Some are in better shape. Some are a bit smarter. Some can't handle the transition academically. This is the same mentality that Pro fans have for "the back-up quarterback should be starting". MAYBE our best POTENTIAL players are on the bench, but I, for one, have seen nothing to make me think there is someone that will step in and change the season. Even if one guy can give us an entire extra win, does the difference between 3 and 4 wins make it worth it?

Re: WR shakeup for Saturday
So we have 17 WR's on the roster as of today. 11 Freshmen, 1 Sophomore, and 5 Juniors. NO SENIORS!
Of the five Juniors we know that Sumler will probably not be returning next year. That leaves M. Jones, Beathard, McElfresh, and Maguire. Capel is our lone Sophomore and Isiah Lewis and is the lone Freshmen playing. Barbour has played but depending on his injury he could still RS. Dante Jones is a RS Freshmen but I don't know if he has seen the field. That leaves 4 Scholarship Freshmen that are being Red shirted. (Meadors, Armstrong, Noll and Hopkins). Not the 8 has it was suggested. That spreads the classes out appropriately.

In regards to Lamb's overthrows, i'd rather have him doing that than Kam under throwing balls that can get picked off.
Dante Jones was the target on Kam's INT in the end zone last week.AppSt94 wrote:So we have 17 WR's on the roster as of today. 11 Freshmen, 1 Sophomore, and 5 Juniors. NO SENIORS!

Re: WR shakeup for Saturday
One thing I noticed about Meadors during fall camp was that he makes catching the ball look easy. Some of our WR's make it look like a chore and can't gain any extra yards. If he gets proper conditioning and vigor, he'll be very good.

While I did not see KB's Int Saturday I cannot comment on it. But I will say this. While KB doesn't have a great arm the one thing that I have noticed is that he typically throws the ball on time and in a place that only his receiver can catch. Criticize his under throws all you want but overthrows aren't any better or safer.

Re: WR shakeup for Saturday
WVAPPeer don't know how you get that I'm calling for Scott to be fired from that post. All I'm saying is if we show no improvement this yr. ,only win 3 or 4 games next yr. and don't at least have a 6 to 7 game win season in 2016 then I;m afraid we can't afford not to let him go. But I am well aware Scot is our head coach this yr. and the next two yrs. But by year 4 if we're still losing more than we're winning and are not real competitive in the Sunbelt then yea, it's time for a new coach and staff . If that senario plays out we'll have no choice 'cause two more yrs, after this yr of 3 to 4 wins and bottom of sunbelt standing then empty seats will be calling the shots. If you think that means I'm calling for Scott to be fired now you're nuts.

Re: WR shakeup for Saturday
I know I'm tilting at windmills here but we do ourselves no favors when we talk about firing coaches, especially coaches who have 2 1/2 years left on their contracts. Unless we hire Bill Gates as our AD, we don't have the resources to buy out such a contract. More importantly, potential recruits read these message boards. They know when fans are grumbling, even when the grumbling is from a small number of fans. It plants a seed of doubt in their heads. UNC recently lost a commit who I'm told is wondering if Larry Fedora will be in Chapel Hill much longer. If the grumbling here grows more pervasive, quality recruits will sign elsewhere and our calls for the coach's scalp will become self-fulfilling.

Charlie, you have a big problem, that being that you make too much sense for this board.AppGrad78 wrote:I know I'm tilting at windmills here but we do ourselves no favors when we talk about firing coaches, especially coaches who have 2 1/2 years left on their contracts.
