Not to derail the thread, but what about Bryant and Barnes?
Those guys are athletes, will they still be in the QB picture? If not can they play elsewhere.

Ponce is a badass recruiter. Other than Woody, he's probably Satterfield's most important hire.

Re: Recruiting, 2014 (temporary)
IMO Bryant has a chance to win the starting position next year. In 2014 he will be a rising Jr(rs) and will have the edge in experience - even if he hasn't played much he will have spent a couple of seasons as #2 on the depth chart and thus received the reps that go along with that. (I see the coaches wishing to redshirt Lamb this year). Right now I don't have much to offer about his talent level as he's only gotten in during mop-up time. I will say that if he's not clearly better than the new QBs coming in then he'll sit, being equal won't cut it. Many coaches would rather play the younger QB when all else is equal so they'll have more time running the system, thus will have a higher ceiling as they gain experience from year to year.Saint3333 wrote:Not to derail the thread, but what about Bryant and Barnes?

Barnes will be a rising Sr(rs) so unless he's head and shoulders better than everyone else (which so far he hasn't proven), I can't see him starting. During the season, after the top 2 QBs the reps drop considerably so he hasn't been getting the reps during the season and will only have the chance to start for one year. So if he isn't clearly better than his competition, I see the coaches placing the ball in the hands of a QB that will be able to run the team for more than one season.

Re: Recruiting, 2014 (temporary)
Notice Caruso said he was ready to come play his football at App State for the next 4-5 years. Obviously, the three coming in could all redshirt their freshman year (Lamb this year and the others next year) giving anyone ahead of them classification-wise an opportunity to play QB. Of course, one of the three could be good enough to take the reins when they get here.Saint3333 wrote:Not to derail the thread, but what about Bryant and Barnes?

Re: Recruiting, 2014 (temporary)
Some of our competitors have signed some good QB's.
GaSo keeps their quiet, but supposed to have a good one coming in besides the FIU transfer.
Caruso has a smooth throwing motion. Seems real accurate.
However Lamb looks as good in ways, and the Charlotte QB looks good.
Should be good competition, which every QB needs to get even better.
Hope we get some other good players, especially linemen, which we probably will.

Reports indicate a 6'3" 220 DE. Apparently beat out ECU, ULL, and K-State for his services.mtnjax wrote:Coach Sloan's twitter says we picked up our 10th commit today, this one on defense.
Any clue Moose?

Update on the spelling of his name it is actually Alanmicheal Harkness rather than Alan Michael or Alanmichael. Spelled different ways all over the net, finally got the correct version.

Pretty impressive. Looks like he had offers from Ark St, UConn, UAB and MTSU. Would think the guy needs to add on some good muscle to play DE though.

Re: Recruiting, 2014 (temporary)
Hey Everybody, sorry but my internet dropped out on me about 5 minutes after I got the news. It just came back up. Most already know but DE/OLB Alanmicheal Harkness (6′ 3″ 235) of Martin Luther King High School in Lithonia, GA is our 10th commit. I've had a page with highlights up for him for a while but he is now added to the Commits list. I'm looking right now to see if any more video has been posted since I added him in May. If I find any more I'll add it to his page. Sorry I couldn't get the info up as soon as I saw it. Charter and I aren't on the best of terms right now.
EDIT: Just added a youtube video to the hudl one on his page.

Re: Recruiting, 2014 (temporary)
Looking at his frame on film it looks like he has plenty of room to add some weight. Coach Woody does like his DE's and OLB's to be speedy so it'll be interesting to see where they plan on using him once he gets in the program.ASU-FTW wrote:Pretty impressive. It will also be interesting to see where 247 and ESPN wind up ranking him. Rivals has him as a 2 star but it looks like all his reported offers were FBS but one or two. And if the offer from Kansas St. is correct that's a BCS offer included. Big Shout Out to the staff. Great job so far and keep it up.
Re: Recruiting, 2014 (temporary)
Impressed. Looking good. If we can recapture having a great defense we could wreak havoc on the SBC.

Re: Recruiting, 2014 (temporary)
I raised this question over on the SunBelt board (CSNBBS) yesterday. It seems folks have written them off, but I'm not at all sure these two should be discounted. I heard criticism about "decisions" etc. after the spring scrimmages, but it's hard to evaluate a dual threat QB when he's wearing a red jersey. Effectively, the non-contact removes the running threat so you are only looking at a one dimensional threat.Saint3333 wrote:Not to derail the thread, but what about Bryant and Barnes?

I do think the new guys will change things down the road, but I think we are very talented at QB...including 2013.

IMO, Bryant will stick at QB and could be good, but we just do not know.Yosef84 wrote:I raised this question over on the SunBelt board (CSNBBS) yesterday. As for Barnes, I think we move him to get him the ball in other places on the field. His on field and off field decision making IMO leaves a lot to be desired. Plus his is, regardless of what the roster says, short! I felt like unless he was rolling out or optioning, he really struggled out of the pocket when I have watched him throw. He is a heck of an athlete!.....but maybe not a QB.
Go APPS!
Re: Recruiting, 2014 (temporary)
We have had a lot of players change positions and then be drafted or signed by an NFL team.
Barnes being such a talent may want to consider a change soon if he isn't assured that he will play
at QB. He probably knows about as well as anyone. Would be a shame to see him not play NFL
ball if he can. We seem to have so many NFL connections that he could make some real inroads by
doing what he needs to do position wise to get that chance if possible.

Re: Recruiting, 2014 (temporary)
So, what makes the most sense for Barnes? It looks like we are stacked at WR and moving him there would be burying him. I assume DB is the most likely destination. We can always use backs who can cover, and who can read an offense.

If Blackmon, Middleton, and Krah can stay healthy there isn't room at DB either. If those guys were able to go last year Ill. St. Would have been a two TD win.

Re: Recruiting, 2014 (temporary)
I found this tweet a few minutes ago. Sure sounds like Walton is committed. You never know what's going to happen but I like it when I kid likes what he sees, wants to be here, and says all other interests are off the table. Thanks to Mike and 247 for the tweet.
Mike Holloway@ASUMike247
3-star TE @BrandonWalton89 says he is "150% committed" to #AppState after this weekend's visit. All other interests have been removed.

Re: Recruiting, 2014 (temporary)
But isn't that "if" the issue? We need depth in defense so that we don't have the drop off when guys get injured....or so we can rotate and keep fresh legs on the field in the 4th quarter.Saint3333 wrote:If Blackmon, Middleton, and Krah can stay healthy there isn't room at DB either.
