Re: Moving on to Marshall
One thing I noticed in September was it seemed that after App State scored a touchdown, the opponents answered back.
So, I looked it up. 33 App State touchdowns this season. On the following drive by the opponents...
-15 touchdowns
-6 punts forced
-4 interceptions (one for TD)
-1 of 2 on field goals
-4 halftimes/end of game
-2 fourth down stops after 50+ yard drives
So just under 50%. If you look at the last four games, 9 out of 18 App State touchdowns have been answered with a touchdown, which is 50%.

Re: Moving on to Marshall
Thanks for doing the research on this. This has been one of my biggest a gripes this year. We have struggled mightily to play complementary football. I swear it seems like every time we score, we immediately give up a score. It was much better last week in the 4th qtr. Heres to hoping that’s the beginning of a new trend!T-Dog wrote: ↑Tue Oct 31, 2023 12:19 amOne thing I noticed in September was it seemed that after App State scored a touchdown, the opponents answered back.

Re: Moving on to Marshall
I'd say situational alignment and scheming needs to be addressed, seriously doubt we've recruited and signed through the portal that poorly.
The most glaring misalignment has been when opponents spread the field and they have isolated 1 linebacker mismatched on their back, usually resulted in huge chunk plays. May need to use less down linemen and designate another to fill the void at linebacker. It's a new offensive gimmick our staff hasn't a clue on yet. Last 3-4 games, we've been burned a new one on that offensive formation.
I'd like to know just how many yards we've given up on that alignment?

We don't have that wide body- fat dude to clog the middle and help stuff the run. It's obvious that teams have watched film and all basically use the same formations and offensive attacks against our defense. As it's been mentioned we simply have to win shootouts and hope that the other teams do something stupid like run on 3rd and 5 when we are allowing 15 yards of cushion on receivers.

Appears the current Boone weather forecast for Saturday evening will be very accommodating...

Or pass on 4th and 2 when they have a RB that has run for 250+ yards.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 31, 2023 7:30 amWe don't have that wide body- fat dude to clog the middle and help stuff the run. Re: Moving on to Marshall
If I was Huff I would run it between the tackles until we prove we can consistently stop them .We have an edge LB playing nose .Great kid , playing hard but he gets moved pretty easily. Can't squander our possessions as they could be hard to come by.

Re: Moving on to Marshall
The scary thing is (halloween), that edge LB playing nose is probably one of our best DL players this year. And that is a problem.
I'm not so sure he is an edge LB though, he probably should be playing Strong DE or interior DL, but that may be because he had to put on 20lbs this year to slide inside due to injuries.

He played tackle in HS at a high level but 250 is light in FBS.311neers wrote: ↑Tue Oct 31, 2023 3:55 pmThe scary thing is (halloween), that edge LB playing nose is probably one of our best DL players this year. And that is a problem.

He's definitely undersized but surprisingly been one of our best. He's making it work for being 30lbs undersized.Stonewall wrote: ↑Tue Oct 31, 2023 4:04 pmHe played tackle in HS at a high level but 250 is light in FBS.311neers wrote: ↑Tue Oct 31, 2023 3:55 pmThe scary thing is (halloween), that edge LB playing nose is probably one of our best DL players this year. Can't disagree but not sure that's a good thing ...311neers wrote: ↑Tue Oct 31, 2023 4:10 pmHe's definitely undersized but surprisingly been one of our best. We are ranked 119th in Net Punting
We are last in number of punt returns (1)
But, we are 2nd in the nation in average punt return (23.0)
We are losing the battle of field position in the punting game

Re: Moving on to Marshall
Special Teams is a weak point for this team that is being overlooked because the defense is atrocious. The ire that some folks have for the offense being "predictable" should be focusing that energy on a non-existent special teams strategy.

We are averaging less than 40 yards a punt..that is not goodMrCraig wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 6:17 amSpecial Teams is a weak point for this team that is being overlooked because the defense is atrocious. Re: Moving on to Marshall
It is not just the punting average. There are several times where we punt from near midfield and should be putting a high spiral to the 10, that the ball doesn't reach the 20 or if we punt it right, it is shanked out of bounds. We only have one touch back punting the ball, so it's not like we continuously kick it too far.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 6:41 amWe are averaging less than 40 yards a punt..that is not goodMrCraig wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 6:17 amSpecial Teams is a weak point for this team that is being overlooked because the defense is atrocious. On the return side, ONE punt return all year. Plus, there have been several that should/could have been fair caught that were allowed to hit the turf and roll towards the goal line.

Re: Moving on to Marshall
These are really good points. In 50/50 games special teams becomes the difference. In our case this probably is why we have lost instead of won our close games.
