I'm not advocating Speir or Elliott at this time but it may be that they are just paying their dues and learning how to be a coach so I wouldn't be too harsh on them. Jerry Moore was not successful when he started head coaching either. When he was HC at Texas Tech, their supporters thought he was a joke. I worked with a guy that was a student there then and he hated Jerry Moore, put for sale signs in his yard and referred to the football team as "Jerry's kids" (a reference the handicap kids that Jerry Lewis was famous for helping with his telethons back in the day). We were winning national championships with Coach Moore and this guy would just laugh and laugh.

He paid his dues and came to Boone not even knowing where it was or how to spell Appalachian but his tough journey to App made him the great coach we all revere. So, let's take it easy on Speir and Elliott...we may be begging them to come to Boone at some point down the road.
I'm not against them coming back one day but as of now I would not think they are ready. I would like to see both go be successful coordinators elsewhere if they both got fired and then bring them back in a 5-6 years or so. I just think right now we can get people from P5 programs or top coordinators or even a HC from a lower tier G5 that has the school on the rise.
I wasn't directing this response at you but more of a build up of a negative vibe towards them across multiple threads and I like and respect both of those guys. As I stated, I'm not for bringing them back now, I just don't like seeing them spoken about so negatively on this board and yes I know this is the internet so anything goes but at some point we may need those guys to come home. Very few people excel at something right out of the gate especially in a complicated scenario of a football program where there are so many variables and it takes time to make course corrections. Some guys do it quickly but they're usually lucky or cheating in many cases which is a short term fix and not a long term solution. At any rate, I like Elliott and Speir and expect them to evolve into good coaches down the road.

In 2013, if we were offered a chance to go 35-6 in our first 5 years in the Sun Belt, win 3 bowls and win 3 SB Conference championships, but we could only have Satt for 6 years, we would have all taken that. We have achieved so much more than anyone could have imagined since we joined the SB.

As long as DG brings someone “from the tree,” we’ll be fine.

Good luck, Coach Satt! Thanks for the great run!
The SBC is not a very good league so I don't think what we have done is more than expected. Had Scott only won 6-7 games a year in the SBC I would have been wanting him to go after year 3. The expectation every year is seriously 9 wins or more and, honestly, if it is less than 10 or 11 (losses only to P5 or top tier AAC) then we should be disappointed.

The standard before Scott got here was to compete for conference championships and he did what is expected. The next coach is expected to compete for the SBC title every year. I want the SBC title game to be called the "Boone Invitational" because we host it every year.

Now, just so you see I'm not unrealistic say we were in the AAC I would be happy with 7-9 wins a year. If we were in the ACC or SEC I would be thrilled to win 6-8 games every year early on.

Alabama is boom or bust when it comes to the national title and that is the case for us when it comes to the SBC title.

That’s a very unrealistic outlook. I’m amazed at the amount of condenscension that is shown towards other G5 opponents on this board. Every school we line up against has D1 scholarship athletes with every intention of beating our behinds. What happened here will likely not be replicated unless NDSU makes the jump.
It is the truth of how it is. If you take App, Georgia Southern, and Troy out of the SBC then it is the worst league in the FBS by far and right now I only think the league is equal to CUSA and the MAC possibly in a tie.

Here is something you have to keep in mind. Most of the SBC are new programs or schools who were I-AA back in the 90s. We are essentially in a version of the MVFC with 85 scholarships so our teams are deeper and more top end talent but it is not really a power league. I believe NDSU could come in right now and be our toughest contender for the SBC title.

What proof out of conference has the SBC shown you that it is not a bottom tier league? if we left for the AAC you would be looking back and saying how much tougher this league is. I am glad we are here now because it got us to FBS and has allowed us to come in and win early on because it is a weaker league. If we had gone straight to the AAC then there is no way we do what we did so quick.

Go check out the computer ratings. They all even have NDSU ahead of us.

Sagarin for example: https://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/sagarin/

All of them have like 2-3 MVFC teams above everyone but us right now. It has NDSU winning the SBC and then SDSU finishing 3rd behind just us and NDSU if they both came to our conference. You can say what you want but the proof in OOC play and in the computer rankings is that the SBC is very weak with just 3 top 100 teams.
Looking at the Sagarin Rankings, here are the G5 Divisions Ranked:

AAC East
Mountain West-Mountain
AAC West
SUN BELT EAST
MAC West
Mountain West-West
MAC East
C-USA- East
C-USA- West
SUN BELT WEST

We are ranked #44

Based on Rankings, we would have finished THIRD in either the AAC East or the AAC West, SECOND in the MAC-WEST and 1st in all other Divisions. Hence, there are FIVE G5 Programs ahead of us.

(N. Dakota State has built a great program--they are #24 and trail only UCF and Fresno State among the G5 Programs--The next highest FCS Program is S. Dakota State at #58)

The AAC has 7 Top 100 Programs (led by UCF at #18)
C-USA has 5 (but, UAB is tops at #77)
The MAC has 6 (led by Ohio at #62)
The Mountain West has 7 (led by Fresno State at #23)
The Sun Belt has 4 (with Troy being second at #81)

The AAC has 2 programs below #130
C-USA has 6 programs below #130
The MAC has 5 programs below #130
The MW has 1 program below #130 (but 3 in the 120-129 range)
The Sun Belt has 4 programs below #130

For the record, Louisville is #113 (last in the ACC, and only Oregon State and Rutgers were lower).

Tim Horton.....seems like a perfect fit. He could be the guy to take us to the next level. Big time SEC recruitor.... top developer of RB talent.... loves Boone and App State.... knows our culture, wants the job..... not an App Alum, but definitely can be considered an App guy.

There are also other variables. Elliott and Speir may struggle in trying to rebuild programs that already have multiple issues. However, either of them may be (or may not be) incredibly successful in a situation where the Culture is set, Winning is the standard, the Coaching Staff is talented, the fanbase is supportive and enthusiastic, and the Cupboard is full of talent and athletes.

What a great ride it has been with Satt at the helm. I'm really disappointed to see him go but I do not fault him one bit, and I wish him all the success in the world.

Thanks for the thrill ride Coach! Knock em dead in Cardinal town!

I have to eat a little crow on the pay, thought it would be more. If what you guys are saying, that's bottom of ACC, his agent does suck for going to a dumpster fire for that little, but it was up to him. Thought he'd get closer to $3M. Hope he doesn't pull a Sparky, and strip our roster.

There are examples of that all over the sports world. You want to take it all in stride, good for you. Please let the rest of us enjoy this ride we’ve been on without the lectures from you on how we don’t understand App Football and our place in the football world. We get it.

If he goes there I fear it will be his worst coaching decision since attempting that last PAT in the So Miss game. Nonetheless, I wish him success and happiness wherever his career takes him.

Glad you did the research! You see my point! We have done exactly what we should in the SBC. It boggles my mind at the people who think 8 wins is fine at App State. It was a disappointment in the SoCon and would be here. I mean I don't want people fired for it but I also don't want it to be the set standard and something that we are just happy with year in and year out. Championships are the goal and always will be at App State. Any of our fans who don't have this goal are selling us short. App really is a good place to be.
Just because we have an expectation of success at App State does not mean we can’t also be amazed at how successful these last 5 years have been. Just because it should happen does not mean it will. There are examples of that all over the sports world. You want to take it all in stride, good for you. Please let the rest of us enjoy this ride we’ve been on without the lectures from you on how we don’t understand App Football and our place in the football world. We get it.
Thank you. Nothing is guaranteed and to pass off what we’ve accomplished as “just meeting expectations” is beyond comprehension. I’m ready for the next lecture now.

Some of you don’t have a clue about the ambition he has as a coach, the potential to be out of a job every couple of years, the 80 hour weeks and every husband’s/fathers desire to secure life for the family. He paid his dues making zip, chump change as an assistant and 6 good years as a head coach. He EARNED this opportunity and no one should begrudge him this. So stop with the “selling out” comments. Rise Above applies to us too.
Not sure why people begrudge him either? He did what he felt was best for him. I think he should have gone 13-0 next year and then taken the really good job that pays 4M base next year but he believes this one can be his big ticket. He could be right. We should know for sure in 3 or 4 years if he jumped at right time.

It is fine to be amazed that we did it so fast but we would not have moved up if SBC titles was not the goal. We haven't done anything yet that hasn't been done before by others or that we haven't done. We just won 3 conference titles and that has been done before. If we win 4 in a row, finish ranked, and go to a NY6 Bowl next year then I will be amazed because we have the expectation but actually doing it is very tough. You need a few breaks to go your way as well. It will be like winning the G5 national title to us.

A couple years ago the coaches started to see we were building something special and could do something we, nor anyone else from the SBC and only a couple other G5s had done in such a fast time in transition. As fans we need to do everything we can to support our coaches and players in making sure this happens. This includes showing up, being loud, and truly giving them a home field advantage. I won't be in awe of a SBC title next year but if we run the table, make a NY6 Bowl, and finished ranked then I think it will be time to step back for a few days and realize we did something few have ever done from the G5 level.

It's amazing what a sense of loss this is. I hope the best for Satt, but I fear he's bit off a big piece with Louisville. Mainly, what's already been brought up, their alumni base has very unrealistic expectations. I'm not sure Scott will have enough time to prove himself, but we'll see. I just wish he'd stay in Boone and build his legacy. I've come to realize this is probably very unrealistic... <sigh>.

Anyway, if I can be selfish about one thing, please tell me he's coaching our bowl game. In my youth, I pulled for UNC and never forgot when Mack skipped town for UT. I hope Scott doesn't bail on the team before New Orleans.

Why would we want a coach with one foot out the door right now to coach in a huge game for us? He'd be serving too masters and neither of them effectively. I keep seeing this desire. That'd put him, Louisville, and us behind in meeting these early recruiting deadlines now. We need someone in place to secure recruits for the early commit date and so does Louisville. I love Satt, but he's gone and the sooner we move on, the better for our future recruiting wise and in general.
