Re: Georgia Southern
Not only did we hump our goats we ravaged your goats and you still have to return to Stink. I'm very content for a week for a change.
Re: Georgia Southern
Did anyone else notice the D formation we ran at least 3 times in the first half, where on 3rd & long, we rushed 3 & other 8 were about 12 yds back?
I've never seen that before & it was absolute GENIUS. 2nd time we ran it, Deuce got a SACK! All 3 times we got a stop. I thought it was some kind of prevent defense and I was thinking "No, No, No ... WOW!"
Apparently, GaSo's QB did not know what to do with it, could not get his reads, etc. I THINK one time we lined up in it, called a timeout, lined up in it again, and STILL got a stop.
Exciting STUFF! If this is Woody's idea, it's BRILLIANT, but I don't recall seeing Woffie run this.
We played well on both sides of the ball, and on special teams yesterday, but this D formation was special.

Re: Georgia Southern
It was very an interesting formation and it certainly confused GS. It appears that the purpose of the LB's being so far off the ball is that it messes up blocking responsibilities from the O-line. IMO

Re: Georgia Southern
They ran that formation several times last week at Furman. Appears to be a modified pre-vent defense. It worked every time last week too.

It was a type of prevent defense, and the 3 rushers did some stunts not just straight rush. It did throw Gus a brain fart.

Re: Georgia Southern
The D played their hearts out today. They chased and TACKLED well. I'm proud of them. The O-Line stepping up and giving Kam time to get the ball downfield was HUGE today. Complete performance overall by the entire team and coaches. Only one blocked FG and horrendous overruled spot by the ref from being perfect. This game could have been 45-7. Great job Apps, let's keep it rolling!

Deuces, if you'll pardon the pun, were wild yesterday as #2 and #22 played lights out.

Re: Georgia Southern
Used it 3-4 times last week at Furman on 3rd and long (15+ yards) and it worked every time. It eliminates the 1 on 1 situations and forces the QB to throw short of the 1st down. It seems works best when the distance is at 15 or more and GSU beat it running the ball with 10 yards to go.AppAlum1 wrote:Did anyone else notice the D formation we ran at least 3 times in the first half, where on 3rd & long, we rushed 3 & other 8 were about 12 yds back?

I don't want to throw water on the fire because the team did play much better yesterday, BUT.... we beat a team that was badly beaten up. 16 scholarship players out for the year with injuries. Its bad when your star staring QB is forced to RB and when he goes out a freshman QB comes in to play RB.

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Re: Georgia Southern
Georgia Southern has a huge problem in their secondary. They left so many holes in their zone. That is going to be a big deal next year when all the other Sun Belt teams run a spread and put up huge yards on them. App and Samford combined for 1150+ yards and 80+ points on them. That is not a recipe for success.
Just food for thought.

Re: Georgia Southern
Plus our best DLinemen against the option the past two years, plus Law didn't start and only saw the field in very limited action (honestly I didn't see him and the coaches said he was out for the game but the participation report shows him) and Darian Small, who has been really coming on, was taken out in a very Elonesque way. Injuries cut both ways.HeffnerIV wrote:They were short handed, but let's remember that we've lost our all-America/pre-season POY, as well as arguably the best football player/most talented player at this level.

We are also playing without Blair and John Law was out yesterday.HeffnerIV wrote:They were short handed, but let's remember that we've lost our all-America/pre-season POY, as well as arguably the best football player/most talented player at this level.
Re: Georgia Southern
They said Law was starting on the video board before the game. I kept looking for 88 but didn't see him once.

Always, with da negative waves!
Seriously though, the stink may have all those injuries, etc. But we have beed hunkering down all year under a perfect storm of crap ourzelves...new first year coach, several new coaches on staff, our superstar WR self-destructing himself into oblivion, a starting QB that could not regain his form, uber-young team, etc, etc, etc. Im not inclined to put an asterisk by this win just because the stink has some boo-boos
Re: Georgia Southern
Terrific game yesterday by the Apps. Sure GSU was banged up but they have been fighting injuries all season yet were still 4-2. ASU is playing shorthanded as well. ASU deserves credit for how well they played against GSU. Solid games yesterday by Kam, the O-Line, and the defense. I was impressed by Kam's accuracy and by the man coverage on their wideouts by our corners. Hopefully we can build from this performance and continue momentum against Chattanooga.

I watched the ESPN3 replay & the annoc.'s hadn't seen anything like it before.AppAlum1 wrote:Did anyone else notice the D formation we ran at least 3 times in the first half, where on 3rd & long, we rushed 3 & other 8 were about 12 yds back?

Good game Apps. Just made it back to Forsyth after a 6 hour drive down from NC.
I haven't scrolled through much to read on this thread, since the cabin we were at (Seven Devils area) had little cell reception, but just wanted to acknowledge the beatdown and say I hope that was the best effort your guys had put together thus far this year. It obviously wasn't ours, but that was in no small part to your team taking care of business.
I'm very glad this rivalry will continue on as we move out of the SoCon. I've made every trip to Boone w/ my Eagles (with the exception of 1993), and always enjoy the trip win or lose. Yesterday was college football at it's best, IMO ... and the atmosphere on Black Saturday was a testament to your fanbase despite your less than stellar record this year.
One last thing, and that is a tip of the cap to the couple of defenders who laid up on McKinnon after he returned from injuring his ankle. Though this is literally a "Black-n-Blue" type of game and rivalry, and despite all of the late/questionable hits in the game ... when McKinnon tried to cut and clearly couldn't go in his attempted return, I thought it was the height of sportsmanship on the part of the ASU defender(s) not to tackle him, though they certainly could have. I already have a ton of respect for your team, but that added another notch in my book.
Good luck the rest of the season, and see you guys in Statesboro next year.
