I read a headline earlier " South Carolina edge rusher signs for 1.5 mil....." SIGNS........... It makes me want to throw up. More than most of NFL practice squad guys make........
Well jay Bilas how do yu feel about NIL now and the portal?
Contracts beyond a scholarship are coming. They’ll have to as it seems like then only way to reign in the portal movement
Schools don't want players to be considered employees so they have been resistant to this idea and the NCAA is a impotent organization that has no power to enforce anything. Something has to change, either collective bargaining or a congressional anti trust exemption or some other clever method to give some semblance of control to the system.
Schools resisted paying players and caved...they will cave on this as well...
Incoming freshman & underclassmen will get 2 year deals with compensation dependent upon on field performance...Upperclassmen will have the ability to resign each year with compensation based upon value and contributions. Each contract will have ways for either party to exit without penalty. There will be clauses around if a HC or OC/DC leaves the school which allows them to enter the portal. Some structure similar to this is how the middle and lower class of FBS will have to opperature so as they can build some semblence of consistency & culture.

It won’t happen but maybe a reasonable solution would be for incoming freshmen to be required to remain at their initial school for 2 years- sit out a year if they transfer after the first year. During those two years they receive a stipend and are eligible for NIL outside of the school. After the two year period they can transfer without penalty. By doing this requirement it gives schools at least 2 years of “stability” and it’s similar to a rookie deal in the pros.
I would leave the one and done rule in place for going pro in basketball but keep the other rules in place such as 3 years for baseball and 3 years out of high school for football.
After the two years for football a rising junior or redshirt sophomore can freely transfer and would be eligible to become a paid employee. This would also allow schools to determine if a player is good enough for full time “employment” so to speak. If an athlete fails to live up to employment standards he can be released and would have the option to remain a student (on his dime or by original scholarship if agreed). He would revert back to stipend.

I have stated this before. It would be great if it were like a deferred compensation plan. You earn it over time (4 years) ...like a vesting schedule. You leave employment, you forfeit the deferred compensation. Then, players are not bouncing around unless you get a significant increase or new employer takes care of your projected deferred compensation and adds more incentives to get you to transfer to their school.

Man did Jack increase his value in 1 year at App. Not playing at VT to bulldozing. Example of a recruiting success to show future recruits in a new world?

Was hoping to keep him. Pretty bad when even legacy players, that made an all conference team in their first year at App after not playing at VT, won't stick around. He was a bright spot on the OL this year.

A bunch of guys that nobody wanted and we gave them a chance to improve. Now they bounce on us after one year.

To be fair, the guys that gave them the chance were bounced.

May just be me, but feels like the largest rebuild we've had in my 30 years of keeping up with App football.

True, but there are a lot of people outside the staff that have invested in them through various means that aren't gone. I'm just getting tired of the money is all that matters mindset that has taken over college athletics. That goes for admins, coaches, and players.

Not just you and not just App. This is the first time we have had all three at the same time:
NIL
Transfer Portal
Coach Change

I’ve come to the realization that many athletes in school are in school as a means to justify an end. They as a group do t have the same experience as the normal student so they don’t see school the same way.

I think a lot of programs can say that. At least until next year when it happens all over again.

Coastal seems to have about the same number in the portal as well.
