For me it's Tennessee and I was there.
Honorable mention would go to 2009 Montana blizzard game I watched on TV.

Tennessee. I can't care too much about App State v ECU as an fcs team. Frustrating thing was injuries.

The stAte game in 15 was more sickening.EastHallApp wrote:Not to be the thread police, but the OP did say "big-time opponents," so I'm not sure Troy or Montana qualify. (Of course Southern Miss definitely wouldn't, and he listed them.)
If we're going to change a Sun Belt game, I'd probably pick stAte from '15 over Troy last year.

An undefeated season in 2006 would have been really sweet.
But I'll pick Tennessee. Recency bias.

Tennessee. Uncle Brent was calling the Tennessee game.

Lol, I used the term "big game" loosely. People will always write in their own options...so I just threw it in there because it was close and we should have won that game.EastHallApp wrote:Not to be the thread police, but the OP did say "big-time opponents," so I'm not sure Troy or Montana qualify. Agreed. Troy hurt because we had them just about put away but for the 4th down prayer. But I have never doubted that Troy was approximately our equal.NoLongerLurking wrote:The stAte game in 15 was more sickening.EastHallApp wrote:Not to be the thread police, but the OP did say "big-time opponents," so I'm not sure Troy or Montana qualify. We were better than stAte, we just had a terrible night for an assortment of reasons.
Plus if we'd won that game, we'd have finished 12-1 and probably spent the last month-and-a-half of the season in the top 25.

Small beans now, but Furman 1980, ABC Regional TV. We will serve no shine before it's time game.

Re: If you could "have one back"?
I've gotta go with Tennessee. My cousin is a big Tennessee fan and was talking a little smack on FB before the game (he quit very quickly once the game started). I guess with Tennessee just barely squeaking out the win he decided he wouldn't talk smack any more (and he hasn't mentioned the game since) but it still would've been nice to have bragging rights within the family.
The mountains are calling and I must go

Tennessee. Montana 09.
Not quite up there with the other two, but two losses that still bother me because they cost us outright titles...Troy last year. Arkansas State a few years ago (I know they won going away, but early on we were on the verge of taking control, made some mistakes, changed the game.)
Honorable mention ECU w/o Armanti

Montana '09 hurt for a long time. Second would be the NC State game!!! Replays clearly showed Beasley drug his foot across the line!!! Tough loss!!!

I will cast my vote for Tennessee. A road win against an SEC in prime time would have put us on the radar early.

Tennessee ... with Montana 2009 not too far behind.

I left that game angry. There was absolutely no reason for that loss.JonW wrote:'06 NC State for me. We easily could have won that game as State was really struggling and would have given us a perfect season.

Re: If you could "have one back"?
EastHappApp, I was thinking the same thing about the "big time programs" part of the topic. I don't think Southern Miss belongs on that list as they were a peer program at the time.
Maybe it's timing but I think Tennessee would be my first pic with Auburn in 97 as second. Both of those hinged on single plays which made the difference in the game and both would have been huge. Auburn could have kick started our rise to championship dominance earlier. Tennessee would have finally given us a follow up to Michigan. The loss to ECU wasn't a single play type scenario although it would have given us a local lift.
Of the "peer" losses, I would have to say Troy and then Southern Miss, although the loss to Montana in the semi finals was huge and did cost us a shot at our 4th NC. In the "Embarrassing loss I wish were erased" category, I'd have to give that one to the LIberty Loss in 2014 followed closely by the infamous choke against VMI.

Freshman year, semifinal game vs. Marshall 12/12/87. We were all making plans on how to get to Idaho. 30 years later still have never visited the "gem state" lol

Re: If you could "have one back"?
I get what people are saying about the 07 loss to NCSU but we didn't play well enough to win that game. I do believe we had the better team later in the season, but they did have a very good D and our O struggled to move the ball for most of the game. If we had played later in the season after Armanti was discovered and hitting his stride, it would have looked very different.
