Turns out he plays... or rather played OL for Georgia Southern. I asked him what the heck was going on down there and they must be happy with the new OC from Ga Tech... his response is that it is a dumpster fire. That he still has a year of eligibility and decided to forego it after initial meetings with their new And realizing nothing was going to change.... he said everyone thinks this means the return of the Triple-O - but that couldn't be further from the truth.
He spoke of being on the field last season and all of the players knowing a called play wasn't going to work as soon as it was signaled in. Described a very toxic environment.

Re: Georgia Southern should drop football
The problem we face here is half of our fans are from Atlanta and no one will come to see a 6 and 6 or worse team. UGA is a huge favorite in state and the only way to buld a fan base here is be 9 - 3 or better all years and that is not likely for anyone in sunbelt. Support and financially we are heading for either fcs or dropping football and having gone fbs probably dropping and reallocating resources to say basketball etc because no one will come to fcs now that we have been fbs.

I have greatly enjoyed the GS vs App rivalry over the years but I fear it has vanished in football.

Wow. Over-react much? I know it's frustrating when you're in the midst of a down turn but this is only year #2 of the slide. To be honest, I am surprised it is this ugly. I really thought the new staff additions would have GS back in the mix, but I didn't realize they were resisting the TO. I also completely disagree that the TO is the "problem." Anyone hear of Georgia Tech or Navy? GS will be back. It just apparently won't be this year.EmperorEagle wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2017 4:18 amThe problem we face here is half of our fans are from Atlanta and no one will come to see a 6 and 6 or worse team. Cant stop lolz'n at the notion that the only two options facing them is relegation or disbanding the program simply because they aren't going 9-3. God I hope hes a real fan. The hysteria pleases me.

Re: Georgia Southern should drop football
Don't say the benediction just yet. Many programs have suffered multiple seasons where they sucked and came back to be a relative power. Look at Wake and Duke. They used to be the laughing stock of the ACC but now are at least competitive some years and some years even better.EmperorEagle wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2017 4:22 amI have greatly enjoyed the GS vs App rivalry over the years but I fear it has vanished in football.
Georgia Southern is a long way from dead.

Working was far from a good coach, but he had little support from the PTB right from the start and his attitude showed it. Brakefield had some bad years, yet he was my favorite coach for a long time.

This has to be one of the more noteworthy college football "riches to rags" stories in recent years. Memo to App State leadership: In no way are we immune to this in future years!

Re: Georgia Southern should drop football
Hey, we're in a state with 4 ACC teams and an AAC team and we've managed to keep our stadium at one of the best attendances in the SBC despite a lousy debut. And a good amount of our alumni are in the Triad, RTP or Charlotte which are at least 2 hours away. Support will always suffer if the product on the field stinks, you make changes and get your team turned around, you'll get your support back. You'll never compete with UGA or GT (I lived in Atlanta so I know that yeah that's Dawg territory) in terms of fan base or funding but if you start back to winning you should continue to have decent success and numbers. Don't let two years of being down turn apocalyptic for the program. When we got rid of Moore and got Satterfield, we had a LOT of concern of where we were going, especially when you all went out and won the SBC championship the first year out and while we were losing to an FCS team and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with our field goal kickers.EmperorEagle wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2017 4:18 amThe problem we face here is half of our fans are from Atlanta and no one will come to see a 6 and 6 or worse team. In short, it's not a lost cause. You all need to support the team and put pressure on the powers that be to make some changes.

Re: Georgia Southern should drop football
I've seen quite a few fans on the flight line saying "Coordinators don't come to Statesboro to learn to be a head coach". Correction...P5 coordinators do, not FCS coordinators, or DII/III head coaches (except maybe those guys at Mount Union and Wisconsin Whitewater in DIII, they can flat out coach winners). And you all who have said "we're 1 bad coaching hire from being in the same spot" are exactly right. It's that easy to lose it and we're lucky that Satterfield is a former player otherwise he might've been gone by now. Hopefully up and coming coaches look at App State as a destination job because we're certainly not in a recruiting hotbed.

Re: Georgia Southern should drop football
Its incredibly hyperbolic to say with what appears to be conviction that the two paths for GS are either head back to FCS or disband completely. That is the definition of "the sky is falling" ie Chicken Little. I don't dispute that the current coaching situation is untenable, but coming on Apps board and acting like they are about to shut the program down is absurd.fjblair wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2017 3:53 pmHe's not chicken little. Re: Georgia Southern should drop football
Georgia Southern is a team which isn't used to losing. As Jeff Gordon once said, when you win all the time, you forget how it is to lose. Every team makes a poor decision and as a result has down years and they are definitely not the only team out there which thinks their situation is beyond catastrophic, look at Baylor. If GASO fans think the sky is falling than Baylor fans have to be on suicide watch.MtnMan09 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2017 4:46 pmIts incredibly hyperbolic to say with what appears to be conviction that the two paths for GS are either head back to FCS or disband completely. Honestly, they'll probably be 0-4 by the time they get to Homecoming, but looking at their schedule, if they can get their stuff together and make some changes/adjustments, they realistically could still salvage their season and get 6 wins (NMSU, UMass, GSU, USA, ULL, CCU) so hope is not all lost. And to polish a turd, New Hampshire is a pretty formidable FCS team, which is always in the playoff hunt, so it's not like they lost to VMI or Savannah State. They might not be playing in a New Years 6 game but they still have plenty of time to right the ship.
