Re: Improving a tradition
I wonder if Stephen Dubner would join the list? Haven't read his books but have enjoyed his radio series on NPR.

Re: Improving a tradition
Not sure of this is the right place to make a change but it's as good as any. Think it would be great to have a place in pregame to honor a famous alum, player, first responder or celebrity with ASU ties. Kind of like Mr. Two bits at UF or dotting the I at OSU but with our own twist. A way to honor someone that will get some recognition and get the crowd fired up all at the same time. App - State chant at midfield before the team comes out/between quarters????

Re: Improving a tradition
It should be about the substance and achievements of the individual. This cant be bought, but earned. If that person happens to be filthy rich, so be it. That just shouldnt be the primary reason.

Re: Improving a tradition
I think the best way to improve our tradition is to have a perfect season and quit losing to P5 programs. 13-0 seems like a decent improvement of tradition.

To the thousands who don’t follow nascar.....hotrod2001 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2019 1:18 amGrowing up a racing fan, THIS was always "The Rock" to me. Kind of rubbed me the wrong way whenever KBS adopted the moniker...I mean, it's not even an original term because Southern Miss has called their stadium that going back to the 30s.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2019 7:59 pmOr just scrap "Welcome to the Rock" entirely. There's nothing special about the line. It's always been cheesy. I don't personally think of it as any tradition at all.

Re: Improving a tradition

What does that mean? Terrible pop songs played endlessly no one knows? If you want club music for three hours go to one. I would counter the vacuous music of the week songs have the opposite effect. Really pay attention. When those songs are piped in, the atmosphere leaves the stadiumApexASU wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2019 7:45 amAside from the welcome to the rock intro (don’t care for it one way or the other) you have to listen to what the students want in music to get them or keep them energized. The same old 70’s songs we hear year after year after year have run their course. Either the band comes up with better tunes or they don’t. Appreciate the band students who put their talents out for us on game day but it is past time to modernize the experience. Just my opinion.

Re: Improving a tradition
One of my originals thoughts was that during the transition you could have some fun by spofing the Connery bit....Peacock was the first person I thought of.....Ken Peacock in a black turtle neck and cap just like Connery....he looks over his shoulder and delivers the line, welcome to the rock

Couldn’t agree more. They kill the fan involment, especially when they are played right up to the beginning of the play while we’re on defense on 3rd down.

Re: Improving a tradition
Right, the music leaves no incentive for the crowd or band to make noise....

Just mic up the "BOD" band and the student section and use that 3 million dollar scoreboard and speakers to our advantage. APP!!!.....STATE!!!
Play PA music during TV Timeouts since they seem to last forever.

This.....! Also let the BOD play "Yikas" every chance they get. Heck, Clemson wears out Tiger Rag the entire game; why not Yikas?Appstate88 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 12, 2019 7:52 amJust mic up the "BOD" band and the student section and use that 3 million dollar scoreboard and speakers to our advantage. We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Re: Improving a tradition
I don’t want to come off as some old guy who hates anything new, but traditions work because fans know whats going to happen and they can participate. Our crowd noise level died when we started all the PA music. We copied this from other G5 schools. Most of those folks have to rely on the PA system because the stands are empty. We don’t have empty stands and we have great traditions. The fans, the band, the players and the cheerleaders should drive the traditions and the game day experience. The PA system and the video board should support not override what the fans are doing. Bugalrs Dream should be played before EVERY kick off. Fans love feeling like they are part of the game. If you replace them with a PA system they will go home and watch the game on the internet.

I think the PA music got the boost after we went out to Montana and they did it.

Re: Improving a tradition
former players turned pros.
Doug Middleton
Ronald Blair
Sam Martin
Kendall Lamm
Daniel Kilgore
Parker Colins
Malachi Jones
any former player for that matter.
Also cool idea if we could pull it off; random celebrities.
Actors, athletes, rockstars etc. make people excited and pay attention to see who it would be that week. Its only 6-7 per year. Shouldn't be that hard...
As long as it clearly shows on the board who that person is, as some of the newer students/fans wouldn't recognize some of the athletes that were gone by their time.
