Personally, I feel like Wake Forest athletics is an afterthought in the North Carolina and the ACC, even if they had a decent year this year.BeauFoster wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2020 2:57 pmI run into them in Charlotte, but the majority are from the MBA program that is uptown. None of them have any real ties to WFU and don't care much for the Deacs.ericsaid wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2020 2:35 pmDo you work with Wake Forest alumni or something? I live in Greensboro and work in High Point, have yet to run into a single graduate of Wake Forest. I'm not sure what they do, exactly.
I'd imagine that Dave Clawson has a healthy respect for App State. Can't think of a coach I despised playing more while Brad Glenn was the OC at App than Clawson.
My best friend's father is a massive WFU alum and donor, and I lived in Winston for 7 years, so I've run into my fair share of them. The Wake family is small, but most are really well off, financially. I wouldn't say they have a complex about App, but some still view us as a little old mountain school with D2 athletics. They believe that their budget and resources should put them at a higher level than App, which like the other threads have said, isn't the reality. The others are scared of us, because they know what we're capable of and how it will impact them in football.

That's for sure - even when they were near the top of the ACC ~15 years ago, they didn't get much respect. Part of that is that this state isn't really a football state, it's a bball state, with so many people raised on Tobacco Road, regardless of any family ties to other schools. App still struggles with it, as does ECU. It'll be a long time before we see major coverage statewide for anyone other than UNC or Duke, or perhaps NCSU.
Give 'em hell!

Wake is more of an afterthought than App, in my experience. Perhaps I'm not around the same crowd (yet, getting there, slowly, because slow and steady wins the race, right?) of people who would have ties to Wake Forest. Either way, there was no Wake Forest chatter in my office in a rather upscale, yet operations oriented, part of High Point (not furniture).BeauFoster wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2020 3:41 pmThat's for sure - even when they were near the top of the ACC ~15 years ago, they didn't get much respect. App and ECU get a decent amount of coverage along the I-85/I-40 corridor. Wake County has a lot of graduates from both ECU and App State so it makes sense to cover their programs, even if it's in passing. Fans of UNC and NC State have been well aware of what ECU's football program is capable of for quite some time and UNC just found out about App State.
I think App should focus on the Triad I-85 between Charlotte and Durham. Lot of App grads along that interstate that coverage would be useful for and where marketing could have some impact.

I live near a few and some don't care so much but a few of them think they should beat App like crazy. They felt we were lucky to do what we did a couple years ago in Boone. I want to beat them big time. Of course, I want to beat any P5 school in the Carolinas, Charlotte, Marshall, and ECU by as much as possible.ericsaid wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2020 2:35 pmDo you work with Wake Forest alumni or something? They still feel like we are not equal to them. I want to go in there and not just win but win by double digits. Their fans that I know who are diehards don't respect us at all. I want to punch them in the mouth and deliver a beating.ericsaid wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2020 11:30 am21 yards on 28 carries to be exact. But Wisconsin is on another plane of existence as it pertains to running the ball than is South Carolina. Of course Muschamp wants to run, he just isn't very good at it.
Probably would be wise to go back and watch the Wisconsin - USF game.
Good news for App is that Wisconsin plays Michigan, at Michigan, the following week. Bad news is Wisconsin plays Southern Illinois the week before App while App plays Wake Forest.

Because we are a huge threat now. And No one wants to admit, to the east, they are afraid.

Re: Wisconsin/Oregon
Most of the Wake fans I know take App as a very serious threat and nobody has indicated that they thought next year's game would be anything other than a tough, close game. No doubt there are Wake fans with attitude toward App (and any other G5) but I seriously doubt their football team and staff are thinking of us as a "better version of Southern Illinois"

Re: Wisconsin/Oregon
I think we are starting to get P5 teams to take us seriously and actually tout App State as an addition to their strength of schedule.

Looking forward to the 2020 schedule, the Badgers have a tough non-conference slate ahead of them. They play Southern Illinois, who went 7-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference last year, at Camp Randall, then the next weekend they host the No. 19 Appalachian State Mountaineers who are always a terrifying schedule and lastly they play the No. 12 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Lambeau Field.

Including Appalachian State, the Badgers actually face 2 teams who ranked in the Top 25 of the final AP Poll. That’s something that only Wisconsin and Purdue can claim.

Best Power 5 vs. Group of 5 games
Appalachian State at Wisconsin, Sept. 19: Though App State lost coach Eliah Drinkwitz to Missouri, standout quarterback Zac Thomas is back after helping the Mountaineers beat North Carolina and South Carolina in 2019 and nearly topple Penn State in 2018. This is a tricky game for the Badgers.
