Do you have a quick link to the USGS maps from that time (late 1930s)or were you looking at printed maps from that time and if so were you looking at the the maps at the Map Library in Rankin.? I have some USGS maps for a lesson plan I once did that included Boone but those maps were current from 1960s or 1970s I think with later additions. I think, and I could be wrong, but ASU Lake on the back side of Howard Knob is shown on my map but it is in purple which indicates an addition from the previous edition of the map and the most recent printing. My maps are at school so I am typing this from memory. I want to say my printed map also included a marker for the wind mill on Howard Knob which would place my map around the early 80s most likely. I might be imagining the later mark on the map I have.BTK2000 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 21, 2020 10:29 pmYeah the video was fall/ summer of 1937. The field is college field that was located where Duncan and rankin are now. I just had a mapgasm looking at a map of Greensboro and I finally found the route of an old rail line I had wondered about.BTK2000 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 3:47 pmFor historical USGS maps I use thisMcLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 2:04 pmDo you have a quick link to the USGS maps from that time (late 1930s)or were you looking at printed maps from that time and if so were you looking at the the maps at the Map Library in Rankin.? I wanted to revive this thread because you guys can be full of stories and I need to read more than covid 19 stories. Out of boredom I’ve been reading more about the history of the region and didn’t know if any of you geezers had any experience with the Wooshies of Howard’s knob.

Cool article about the nasa turbine ontop of Howard’s knob and some fun App students had with a tv crew

I remember the FAA was trying to figure out how to light it.One proposal was to put strobe lights on the ends of the wings. The (heads)in old East would have had fun with that. The FAA finally decided on just the red light.I guess they figured if an airplane was flying that low it deserved to be smashed.

Back when App State had a museum in University Hall over near Boone Mall there was a nice little exhibit about the windmill.BTK2000 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 1:03 amI wanted to revive this thread because you guys can be full of stories and I need to read more than covid 19 stories. I had a paternal aunt and uncle that attended ASTC and ASU and they lived in Boone during the time the windmill was in place. I remember visiting Howard Knob at least once while the windmill was in place.

Re: 1977 Conrad Stadium
The biggest part of this article is really the fact that the below even exists. I had no idea this was an area of research.
"wind historian Darrell M. Dodge."
----------------
I can only imagine the conversation this person had in high school before heading off for his BS degree.
"So what are you going to study?" - HS Guidance Counselor
"Wind," replies Dodge.
"As in how to make it useful and how to use it in the future for energy needs?"
"No, I am more interested is where it has been and what it was doing in the past. I plan to be a wind historian. There are not many jobs for wind historians at the BS level so I plan to get my BS degree and then eventually get a PhD in wind history. Cornell has a premier wind history program at the doctorate level. Post-doc research will likely be in The Netherlands."
"Have you thought about job prospects?" asks the counselor.
"I'll be the first every." quipped Dodge

Re: 1977 Conrad Stadium
I was there during the time doing Masters in summer school. They had it so roped off we couldn’t get close. Just because we would climb the fire tower didn’t necessarily mean we would the wind mill.

Re: 1977 Conrad Stadium
What was the real reason Conrad was never expanded to 25k as was promised in the newspaper article?

I’m sure the official reason will be money, or the lack of it! However, having lived thru this time period of APP athletics; it’s my opinion it as very poor management at the administration and athletic department level.

The old heads who a) fired Coach Brakefield and b) refused to hire Fisher DeBerry (you know....HOF coach from the Air Force Academy?), and decided infamously that "WDDITWAA" otherwise known as "We Don't Do It That Way At Appalachian."
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

If this works here is a picture of Conrad Stadium that I knew from 1973-1978.

My belief, based on first hand observation , is that there have been people in places of power and influence that intentionally held us "back". I can only theorize as to why.

Because it would have been half-empty for most games?
