Hopper is a legacy name in Shelby football. If he does well here and likes it here this could pay dividends for years to come.
I'm curious to how or if Santana is related to Norris Hopper.....ex CF for the Cincinnati Reds as well as the fastest quickest QB I've ever seen at the HS level.

Also of note.....the younger class man CB for Shelby that was impressive in the game is also a Hopper.
KICK ASS!!!

Wallace-Rose Hill isn't a big school, but it's big in the world of NC high school football. They've produced power conference talent in the past. And their coach isn't know for being quiet.

The only things I can point to as why he "fell" to App was his size, 5'11" and 190 lbs, and maybe he didn't go to camps? That's how NC State got a linebacker from Whiteville.

There are a lot of P5 RBs who are his size and some smaller so not sure it’s size. Whether a power or not I have heard coaches question a player in 1A or 2A because of level before but his numbers are so good you think they overlook it. Regardless of why to date he was on TV and had a monster game so I wonder if anyone tries to throw a late offer out there now.

Coaches don’t look at his gaudy numbers alone. They evaluate on the skill set that one has that allows the kid to get those numbers. Vision, hip flexibility, running style. Yes, some will look at the level of competition and discount the numbers, but they can’t discount the skills.

Of course numbers don’t equal offers, just like college stats don’t guarantee a draft pick, but meant his should have gotten more attention.

I wondered if his coach being an App guy helped us at all with the recruiting process. I have to think it did. I just wonder why he didn’t get picked for Shrine or win Mr Football.

Clearly school size can effect offer lists but yes there are high school kids from small schools who get offers.

With Roberts, I have to think his head coach alerted us to him and has helped us a lot since he is an App guy. When I heard it during broadcast I thought that explained a lot.

He was identified by our staff and camped here last summer. We have been quietly recruiting him all year. I haven’t spoken to any of the WRH coaches family or casual friends, but I feel certain in saying that their coach didn’t influence his recruiting or lack of recruiting.

Shrine pics have lots to do with who the coaches are and somewhat to how far your team goes in playoffs. Some don’t want a player that already has 15/16 games

There is no way to know for sure but his head coach being an App grad can't hurt! I remember reading on 247 he camped here and we had been on him during the fall.

I'm just shocked nobody offered him before the season and others have not already jumped in prior to the playoff. The title game performance has to make our staff extra nervous for Wednesday. It can't get here soon enough.

They are very political indeed. I'm just curious to know if they did not think his skill set was good enough or if his level of play or something else effected it. There is no way to know unless the Shrine comes out and says so.

Game load shouldn't have mattered for Shrine Bowl this year since the game won't be played.

Know about Wallace Rose Hill directly. They came into our house in 1994 and beat us in the semifinals. Bench clearing fight at the end of the game that resulted in 17 suspensions on our side, not sure about their side. Two guys from our team played at App. One was an important piece of one of our Wake Forest wins, got an ESPN highlight for knocking a dude’s helmet off.

I love the small school guys. If you can play, you can play. My favorite small school player was from a little bitty school. Herschel Walker.

Big Game Torry Holt at 2A Eastern Guilford was my favorite. Played against him, too. His team sucked, but we put three players on him the whole game and he still scored 2 TD’s. Those were their only TD’s but we were #4 in the state at the time and pretty impressive that he could still do that.

Robert's final numbers against the 2A State Champions.

Carries 26
Rush Yards 261
TDs 5

Pretty damn impressive. Can't wait to see him in Boone.

Hope both of these guys stay the course.

We've had 10 years of 1,000 yard rushers. Roberts could have the chance to compete right away, and in all probability would become a feature back. Doubt he would get that chance at Cheater U or State. In their minds they have already recruited higher ranking players than him and he is an after thought.

Hopper also has the size and speed to compete and break the starting line up. Think of the edge people we have developed over the last two decades.

In State’s case, one of their committed RBs may not make it to campus due to legal issues.

I hope the kid turns out to be a great Mountaineer during him time on the Mountain. With that said, if Noel, Peoples and Harrington are back and healthy, I hope they are getting the carries if they give best opportunity to win. I really want to see what a healthy Peoples could do, if healthy all season, versus sharing carries with 3 other backs. Personally, to get in rhythm, the two back system seems to work for most teams. If we have health issues (which I hope not), then , by all means, give the backups the opportunity.

With all that said, if he is the next Herschel Walker college RB, give him the ball.

Just speaking hypothetically, but what IF Peoples isn’t our best back?
