I'm beginning to think that our corners and safeties are so slow that the coaches figure it's better to run up rather than trying to chase a faster receiver. I've seen very few plays where our DB actually stays with a receiver (doesn't commit PI) and breaks up or defends a pass.

The 3/4 defense requires a big body in the middle to stay put and simply occupy space. We don’t have anything close to a big body on the whole of the D line much less in the middle. If the coach from Southern Miss had enough since to just run the ball they win by 3 TD’s. We are either really inept or we missed horribly in recruiting over the last 3 years. The D line will have to be fixed before anything we do in the secondary will matter.

I was giddy every time SMiss decided to not hand the ball to Gore Jr. All they had to do was run the ball to win. They were flat out better up front. On both sides.

And afraid it'll be that way the rest of the way.

4th and 2 and throwing it with frank gores son on the sideline… would be pissed if I was a USM fan

It’s hard not to ignore that ODU lost to #25 JMU by only by 3 and that Marshall got crushed by Coastal

I absolutely hate it because it keeps hope alive. I want to be able to just have a free Saturday, but no! I have to stay invested. Literally, “all of our goals are still in front of us.”

Who would have ever thought that an App-Marshall game would be for last place in the division?

The hypothetical of playing Marshall for last place in the division and Southern for first place in the division all in the same month sounds kinda juicy

I know it's not relevant or a great argument but if I'm not mistaken during the great FCS championship years we had lots of high scoring shootout games with inferior opponents. To say we are playing for last place with a third of the season to go is kind of crappy. It's going to be tough to say the least but aside from JMU it's pretty wide open. Teams are still going to eat each other.

Unfortunately our offense does look very antiquated and predictable. Time for a refresh.
Even one of the announcers stated the same - that no matter who is coaching the offense has the same tendencies - or something like that. Basically the offense has not changed much over the past coating changes. I believe he meant it to be a compliment.......

I agree on the refresh - time to move into 2023. Even with the offense putting up numbers - we are predictable

I give us a slight edge over Marshall at home. Who knows...a win over Marshall puts us over .500 overall and in conference play ...maybe our guys continue to gain confidence and we find a way to find bowl eligability

We did some things on offense against SMU that we haven't done much this season and it was really good. It seemed like we had way more passes across the middle (slants or crosses) that hit our receivers in stride and allowed for yards after the catch. I prefer those plays to the longs flys down the sideline on 50/50 balls which we did not really do tonight. I said last week that we just need to out score everyone else and I stand by that statement. Our d isn't great by any stretch but I really think it can stop every team AT LEAST one more time that that team can stop our offense if we open it up. Joey is really growing into a pretty good qb. He is making better decisions each game and is throwing more accurately. Nobody in the Belt is unbeatable and we can win these next 4 games. Turn our offense loose and lets just outscore everyone else the rest of the season.

Southern Miss is giving up an average of 43 ppg in conference games. Everyone is doing things against that defense.

We give up 36 ppg in conference games playing 4 or the bottom half opponents in the SBC.

We have avoided the top five western teams and by default have the easiest Eastern schedule.

SMU also had 6 or 7 players out that were back after the bye week.

I just got done rewatching the game. I agree that Ponce obviously made some adjustments on offense after the first quarter, and they were for the better. This medium passes looked great.
I get the complaint about predictability, but I think a lot of that comes from a bad offensive line. When you don’t have blocking, it limits your offensive ability. Despite that, App’s offense, especially Joey and WRs, has been just about the only reason to watch this team.
I also noticed some improvement on the defensive line. The rest of the defense is atrocious, however.
You can see a lot of potential on this team. The question is will it be unlocked this season and/or with this coaching staff.

I think the same. I’m pretty sure the secondary is basically playing a prevent defense every down because the safeties and corners get beat so bad if they don’t start 10-15 yards off.

Marshall will be the first team App has faced not coming off a bye or extended period to prep for us (or change their offense) since the Wyoming game.

Beat the turds.
I don’t care about a bye … what I saw today was a team uninspired, not coached, flat and not prepared. There’s no one that wants Clark to succeed more than me but dang today was bad. This is the third game I’ve personally watched where there’s this little delay from the RB and the they hit this massive hole like the seas near Gibraltar and we’re no where near. DBs playing ten+ yards off of WR in a 3rd and 6 and they throw for 12 just don’t get it.
I vehemently disagree with you that the team was flat and uncoached. Ponce clearly made some changes in the 2nd quarter and even more at half time. App pretty much abandoned their power-run game (which hasn’t worked all season) and started using an intermediate passing game to open up the defense and set up the run.

The secondary was terrible as it has been all year. But the offense looked like they were having a good time. I mean, you can’t argue with 48 points.
