My preference as well. Logos are a means to instant recognition, both conscious and subliminal. Thereby one has branding.

The white block A was on the cover of Sports Illustrated
. That exposure is priceless. Not maximizing its use is a colossal waste in my opinion. I hope to see the white block A return to the helmets.
Amen Steve!!
The white Block A isn't being completely eliminated, is it? The impression I got from the article is that the black one was merely being introduced as a secondary logo for merchandise.

According to the article on appstatesports.com the white Block A is still the primary logo with the black bodied Block A as a secondary and the "Victory Yosef" as the other secondary. That's the only three they have in the logo library now.

Love this news. The old school Yosef is great. I didn't hate the floating head one, just didn't like how it looked like so many other schools. During that phase where a lot of schools redesigned their logos, they all looked the same because I think a good majority of them were done by that same company. The only logo I flat out couldn't stand was the one where it had "Appalachian Mountaineers" written diagonally with the floating head logo on the top.

The black "A" I admit I wasn't big on when I saw the new uniforms online, but seeing them in person they looked sweet. (BTW, why aren't they selling the new jerseys? Can't find them online, in the bookstore, or on Nike site.) The white "A" is classic, nothing needs to be said there.

Someone said we went back to block letters in the endzone? Is this current, for next season? If so, does anyone have a picture of it? That would be great. I like the black endzones best, but would be fine with green as long as the lettering was changed. I really disliked the current lettering.

Happy (late) Thanksgiving!

The white Block A logo doesn't work with the matte black helmets. The black block A is also on the jerseys and pants.

Also, I would like there to be a Mrs Yosef plus a human mascot named Daniel Boone that wears an open shirt and/or suspenders. Add on long hair and a mountain beard and he would be the Kliff Kingsbury of college mascots.

I am in complete support of the addition of a Mrs. Yosef. A lot of larger schools have wives for their mascots, so Yosef could always get hitched. NC State has Mr. and Mrs. Wuf, so we could always do something along those lines.

I would also support a Daniel Boone-esque live mascot at each game. He could wear the coon hat and all, as long as it doesn't look like a WVU ripoff.

I love that App State is bringing back old traditions but it's always okay to make new ones too!

Well then, lose the matte helmets. Get thst white block A back on there and lets get consistant with our look. I can live with an alternate uniform for a couple of gamesa season, although I hated this year's version.

Speaking of uniforms, I couldn't even watch Oregon v. OREGON state the other night. It was offensive to the eyes in the worst way.

I am with you on this. Seems like Michigan, Alabama, and many of the established programs don't need change after change and are able to recruit just fine. We have a uniform and helmet. Stick with it and don't make people guess who we are.

Just my opinion on this, but I couldn't disagree more about a Mrs. Yosef. That has disaster and embarrassment written all over it to me. Please no.

Saw the deadspin article too. Kinda funny. But, who cares what they think. App people love the vintage Yosef, and that's what matters. Going along with fad national trends is what caused us to design the floating head logo to begin with.

Re: uniforms, can't compare us to Michigan or 'Bama. Those schools recruit themselves. But even the big teams though have succumbed to the trend. Michigan has worn throwbacks, as has Ohio State, and many others teams like UGa, FSU, UNC, Nebraska, etc have come out with alternate 3rd black jerseys.

Yeah, we're getting SLAMMED on twitter about this. Of course it's mostly by rivals and students who have no idea what it means but I've gone through over 1,000 posts since this article was put out and a blogger on CBS has also written about it. Oh well, we'll ride it out as always.

Important to point out that the idiot on CBS thinks we just came up with the name Yosef. He doesn't know a thing about the history of the school or that Yosef has been our mascot for years. Idiots with computers.

I think it's great! If they're taking the time to comment and use space on their page, then that's awesome for us! Think about what the average football fan is going to do next time they see an App State game on their digital cable guide. At the least, they'll stop and see what this 'childish' App State logo stuff us all about.

First time posting on the new site. I have to agree with deadspin. The victory yosef looks like a sketch of the one used in the 70's. I was thrilled when they announced that they were bringing back old yosef, but disappointed to see that it was a take on the original. The one from the 70's looks professional. This ones does not. I've heard that the licensing rights to old yosef were purchased by an individual, causing the university to have to recreate. The one from the 70's is only used on on the unis due to the cost to the individual that owns the right. Any word if this is correct or if they are looking to purchase the rights to the old yosef? Sorry if this a dead horse. It's been a while.

I understand the throw back for a game although I really go to see football not a fashion show. I am talking about your identity. Think Michigan is going to change their helmet any time soon? If we really think it is so important for the rest of the country to know who we are we can't keep changing costumes. Let's save the money and spend it on things that matter like coaches.

We just as well change our name to the Hillbillies if that is going to be our logo.
Pappy Yokum with Mammy Yokums' pipe direct from the Li'l Abner cartoon series and movies.
Rip off of Al Capp cartoon series ran for 43 years until 1977. It was based in Dogpatch, Arkansas. Capp never lived in the South but made a fortune writing cartoons about ignorant Southern hillbillies. Loved to read Karl Marx and make fun of things.

I love it! We ARE hillbillies. Hillbillies exhibit loyalty, faithfulness, hard work, trust, and most of all, love of family. I am damn proud that I am a hillbilly. I can't think of anything better to be. We now have a distinctive brand, and something the vast majority of our fanbase will rally around. Yosef versus some generic Gorton's Fisherman lookalike is no contest, in my opinion.

We have the #1 class in the Belt right now. Guess we should just be the Tigers or Bulldogs because that is so distinctive.

I had never heard about the copyright issue but that would explain why the version on the old mountain jug and old media guides looks so much better. The detail in the eye and ear makes it look much less crude. Is some guy sitting on the copyright in the hopes of oodles of cash? My faith in humanity is shaken again.
