we already have made some progress with Wake, having signed a home and home in football, plus we are playing them almost every year now in baseball, something I don't believe happen up to 4 or 5 years ago. I think Wake understands that our largest alumi base is in the Greensboro/Wake area, and its pretty much a guaranteed home sellout. Its just the beginning of a partnership in sports with Wake, in public they will never admit to us being a rival, but behind close doors they understand the benefits of playing us. As far as ECU,...eh, they don't seem to see the benefits of playing us in any sport on a consistent basis. I think they are trying so hard to impress the P5 conferences that in their minds, they see it as a negative to be associated with App, maybe they will come around in the future. As I said before, UNCC is not a rival of us at this time, and we shouldn't consider them one until they gain respectability as a good FBS program, probably not for atleast 4 to 6 years, but eventually, the odds are favorable we will be conference mates.

That question sums up a big part of how I feel about it. I understand the proximity and recruiting benefits of an off and on series with uncc and have accepted the fact that we will more than likely see more of it as the years go by. However, why is it that they are the "go to" when the scheduling topic comes up and why do so many ASU folks clamor for a heated rivalry with them? When I think of establishing a rivalry in FBS, I think of re-establishing either of the rivalries we used to have with ECU or Wake. I know neither will happen over night, but can't we at least try? It's not like uncc is knocking our door down trying to make us their rival! One thing I give their fans credit for is that at least they are setting their aim higher. Not sure why so many of our fans can't/won't do the same.
For me it is not creating a rivalry, it is keeping them in 'our little brother' place. They quit playing us in basketball when it was competitive and by dumb luck got an invite to cusa by location. I want to remind them 'whose your daddy'. :D

Woah. Why would we want to lower ourselves to their level by validating them with "rivalry" status? That program has gotten it's **** kicked in for two years while they were still sitting at the kid's table and they can't even get 10,000 people to their games.

Proximity and bad blood from message board fans does not a rivalry make.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I simply don't get the uncc fascination* of some ASU fans/alums. If we must have a series with them, fine, I've swallowed that bitter pill. However, now folks are talking about making them the year end rivalry game???? Just....don't.....get, especially given that they have looked down their noses at us this whole time. I just hope our new AD has bigger aspirations than that.

*Yes I understand the recruiting benefit of playing in Charlotte. That's the main reason I've been able to stomach the upcoming series, even though there are other ways to accomplish that.
I get playing Charlotte.....for the access to the Charlotte recruiting area.....but I do not even consider them in any way ready for this next August. They may be on the right track but the race is going to be a long one for them....Except for a couple of players.....they are NOT ready for primetime.....in any way.
Go APPS!
