Re: # 14
Sure when a number is retired it takes 2 useable jerseys off the board but with right at 200 jerseys available it would take a long time and a lot of great players to use up all available numbers and move into 3 digits ---

Re: # 14
What am I missing? We have only have 0, 00, 1 and on to 99 numbers. We already have more than one player on roster assigned the same number. That's no good. I realize some of 'em are redshirts or walk-ons who may never see the field in any one year, but that's beside the point...

Actually the only rule is that players with the same number can't be on the field at the same time, therefore usually one is an offensive player and one will be a defensive player - most colleges have duplicate numbers playing in the same game ---asu66 wrote:What am I missing? Having two players with the same number is the norm in college football. Nothing negative about it, and I doubt you'd find a school in the nation where that's not the case. It's just a mathematical necessity.asu66 wrote:What am I missing? We have only have 0, 00, 1 and on to 99 numbers. We already have more than one player on roster assigned the same number. However, you are right about having to be selective about retiring numbers, if you do it at all. Can't take too many of them off the board.

Re: # 14
Last year both Taylor Lamb and Devin Stringer wore #11 as they will this year - some others are ---
- 10 - Caruso and Howard
- 4 - Jaylin Barbour and Mondo Williams
- 3 - Gray and Hopkins
- 6 - Gilchrist and Meadors
- 88 - Law and Capel

Thanks, that was my only point. You put it in fewer words!

I wasn't suggesting that your point about being judicious with retiring numbers didn't hold merit - and I agree --- I was merely pointing out there are close to 200 jerseys available in college football, therefore it would take a long, long, time and a slew of GREAT players for us to ever be in danger of not having enough jerseys available ---

Re: # 14
Concerning number retirement, I think the best long-term approach is the "Legend Program" that is utilized by storied programs such as Michigan.
Instead of retiring a number, in which case it would never to be worn again, (effectively losing a jersey on both sides of the ball) the Legend Program distinguishes the number with a special patch (such as the one pictured) placed on the jersey of every player to wear the number. For visual reference, check out Devin Gardner's #98 uniform from his time at Michigan.
The benefits? Our former players are honored with more than just a banner. Legends numbers could be passed down to players who exemplify sportsmanship (as Armanti did).

Regardless of what you do with the number 14, you DO NOT take it from Marcus Cox. There are some things in nature you don't mess with and you don't change a guys number in the middle of a great career.
