This is freaking picky.
I'll bet some of you are comparing this to the Hole broadcasts? Why don't you compare budgets. I'll freaking bet APPs broadcasting/media budget is dwarfed by UNC- Chapel Hill's.
I think the guys in APPs booth past and present have done and do a fine job of painting a picture of APP football...And I have listened to every single game for nearly 20 years.
Why don't you guys call David Jackson and get him to tell you what he has to work with compared to others he's visited.

Daniel Wilcox on ASN Radio Broadcasts: One Request
I may not have started the post, but I couldn't agree more with the OP. I didn't know who it was and it certainly (from me) is not meant to be hurtful but to help improve his career prospects, he needs to have a much more professional choice of verbiage, even beyond the word freaking, than what he has now if he ever wants to be more than a sidekick. If he is just doing it for the season to help us and is not trying to pursue this long term, he's doing a great job, much better than I could do for sure.
People have to be able to swallow constructive criticism without being offended or they are destined for mediocrity. Someone said that he has producers/assistants/etc to help coach him. Maybe true, but just because they should coach him doesn't mean they will.

It takes any media talent time to become a good broadcaster. Nobody, not Musberger, not Marv Albert, not Cotton McKnight walks in on day 1 sounding the way they sound today. Color commentators are there to be the sidekick, to learn from the master, grow, get better, and be the homer that flies from the hip.Yosef wrote:Someone said that he has producers/assistants/etc to help coach him. Again, this coming from a guy who is in the media...back off Daniel. He's a beloved son of Appalachian State and has only had a few games. If he still totally stinks after a full season (12 attempts) then critique.

I destroyed all of my tapes so there's no evidence of my early terribleness.WXAPP wrote:Agreed it takes a while to level the wings... I look at some of my early stuff and cringe....

But did you at least avoid using the word "freaking" ?APPdiesel wrote:I destroyed all of my tapes so there's no evidence of my early terribleness.WXAPP wrote:Agreed it takes a while to level the wings... I look at some of my early stuff and cringe....

Might not have been "freaking"... I can tell you ... I've beaten a few phrases and words to death. You have to learn how to corral the psychobabble and keep it level. Not an easy task when in the heat of live, and often, intense coverage. It's not an easy skill, but one that finds a footing over time...

When pitcher-turned-color announcer Dizzy Dean first uttered "He slud into third base," I'm sure there were a couple of grammarians who protested. But we're all better off for a few sports colloquialisms. Keep up the good work, Daniel.

Musberger? That fella has been at it for decades and still isn't worth a crap!APPdiesel wrote:It takes any media talent time to become a good broadcaster. Same here. I am out of the business now but, it takes time to get into this type of work. I actually appreciate Daniel's perspective. His presentation will continue to evolve.

I didn't know who he was at first, but I think he's awesome. The best broadcast teams are sometimes the ones that juxtapose styles as someone references earlier to Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese. I appreciate the excitement in his voice.
