Sort of like how the anti-gun, government-will-protect-you-better-than-you-can-yourself, lobby convinced its target audience that 'gun-free' zones would make us all safer.

I don't need anyone to convince me that I know a lot of idiots. Also I love how you just repeated another NRA talking point further validating that they have hijacked an argument that started out as sportsman advocating for their rights and turned it into I need and automatic assault weapon to protect against a heavy handed government. Good luck with that Jim Bob....

The above link is a very interesting read, a little long but good. Very good history lesson on how we got where we are today. Spoiler alert the current interpretation of the second amendment is less than a decade old.

I can assure you I'm no "Jim Bob'. I'm also not a NRA member. I'm just a reasonably open-minded constitutionalist. But nice job with the name-calling, Internet tough guy.

I can see how you thought that was directed at you but I apologize it was not. It was more toward those who have that argument about assault weapons. I know some Jim Bobs personally (an uncle of mine has an impressive weapons cache). I don't know you or your opinion so I would not be so rude as to call you a red neck.

To be fair, this thread is full of talking points from the anti-gun lobby as well.

True. Honestly it is an area where educated people have to agree to disagree sometimes.

True. There is no perfect solution. Personally, I just know if I was ever in a situation with an active shooter I would much rather have a gun than not.

I know some really fine people who graduated from Liberty. And if we're talking football, they've put together some pretty good teams lately. Last time they came to Boone they beat us. I would think as far as football goes our fan base would relate to Liberty. Just like we were, their a good FCS team that can't get a good FBS conference deal because of " marketing" issues.
I never felt the need and actually would have been happy to have them in the conference. There are many fine people who have gone there to include one of our assistant BB coaches. Then things changed when Mr Falwell decided that as many students as possible should carry on his campus. It is a place I will never step foot on again. I now hope that they do not get into any conference we are in. I care less about their religious beliefs as that is their business and has nothing to do with football or any other sport. My problem is that a collage campus is one of the last places on earth I want everyone carrying guns. No I am not anti gun I just have a brain.

You have really made a breakthrough, if we just ban guns on school campuses there will never be another shooting on a campus. Oh wait, guns have been banned on all the school campuses that shootings have taken place at in the past. I can't believe that didn't work. What's the world coming to when you can't count on a crazed lunatic with mass murder on his mind to abide by state and local gun laws. I know, maby we should outlaw mass murder. That will stop them. Oh wait mass murders is against the law already. Can't believe they don't obey that law either. I'm not a gun nut and I do believe in background checks but to say you "have a brain" and then imply that gun bans will stop gun violance is kind of absurd.
I didn't imply anything of the sort and your statement is what is absurd. What I did say is that I think it is a VERY bad idea to have a few thousand kids on a campus carrying guns. Alcohol, drugs, and 18 year old kids with guns just is not a good idea to anyone who is really thinking this through. Do you really want to be on campus on a football weekend ?
"A few thousand kids on campus carrying guns" would not happen. The people who would be allowed to carry on campus would be those who already have concealed carry permits. These people have to be at least 21 years of age, and have taken a course and passed a test on how to safely carry a firearm. Allowing guns on campus is NOT allowing every student to carry a gun, it just allows those who CAN legally carry a gun everywhere else they go, to carry one of campus as well.
Well you are partly correct. You do have to be 21. Where you are wrong is that it would not be students already allowed at Liberty as Mr. Falwell is offering the classes on campus and encouraging all 21 yr olds to participate. So name your number and that number of 21 yr olds, drugs, and alcohol, on campus is just a real bad idea. Just like bars there are certain environments where guns are just a real bad idea.

Drugs and alcohol aren't allowed on campus, like at App, so those won't be an issue in relation to the ore sense of guns.

For the record, I'm a pretty avid shooter and own my share of guns. I have a CWP and I'm a lifetime member of the NRA. All that being said, I have very mixed feelings about allowing students to carry on campus. It is not those who hold valid CWPs that concerns me. By the way, If a person is carrying under a Concealed Weapon Permit, their blood alcohol level must be ZERO. Plus that person has passed a rigorous background check and received training.

The problem I have is more with guns in the dorms where parties are a regular occurrence and where roommates are often assigned (not chosen). It is a unique environment with complex issues. I wish I knew all the answers, but I don't. I really don't believe that the NRA or the anti-gun lobby have the answer either. Guns are not evil and are most certainly not the source problem.

The problem in Akron has nothing to do with campus carry. It was in an off-campus apartment. Drinking was apparently NOT involved. It is a tragedy and I hope the young man makes a full recovery. I also hope that people who have guns for home defense (as I do), will take note that without exception, you MUST IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET BEFORE SHOOTING!!! If you are going to own guns, please get training so that you know what you're doing.
