Accuracy is almost impossible to obtain without old-fashioned turnstile counters and they can be finessed by jumping over them or crawling under them (like children are likely to do).

Digital scanners are only accurate to the extent that every ticket gets scanned at the gate; or that the stub gets collected and scanned after the fans are in their seats. For reasons unknown to me, the scanners that our rent-a-staff folks have been using are really flaky. It never fails that at every home game, one or more of them will flake out just when the lines at the gates are four or five wide and backed up 25 or 30 yds.'.

Here's what I think they all do--college and pro: (1) collect turnstile/digital scanner data; (2) calculate ticket outlay totals (both paid and player/corporate sponsor/VIP comps); and (3) get the crowd estimate from the local resident expert (everybody has one of those guys)--then REPORT THE HIGHEST OF THE THREE OR PERHAPS THE AVERAGE OF THE THREE.

Reporting the high number might not be believable on some afternoons. Reporting the average might produce the most dependable and believable "attendance" figure. It's an inexact science, at best.

However the official figure is calculated, it will be interesting to see what our attendance looks like for the non-Miami portion of the schedule. While we don't have any weeknight or Thanksgiving weekend games, we also don't have Georgia Southern, A-State or ULL coming to town. And then of course we'll likely have more "bad luck" at some point with less-than-perfect weather, and maybe a non-3:30 kickoff time or two.

Can we (more or less) pack the stadium for ODU and assorted Sun Belt riffraff?

I can see us getting some good numbers for the ODU game just for regional name recognition and the Ga State game (because we love beating the living crap out of them so much........) :D Additionally, I can see getting some good traffic for the Texas State game since we have not played them since Trey Elder was here.

At only two games last season did my ticket actually get scanned. That was true for my entire group as we usually enter the stadium together. The announced attendance has to be based on tickets sold plus some estimate of student attendance.
