The cramps will go away. There's no way to simulate actual game situations in practice no matter how much conditioning we do. The announcers said the highest temps in Boone during camp were mid-80's. Anyone know what it was in Knoxville last night?Yosef84 wrote:The cramping problems concern me. I sure hope that is not an ongoing issue.

We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Re: Though loss
hard fought game by our team. the performance gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season. Rubino will be just fine as the season goes along. also think our WR's will make more plays going forward. that was probably the toughest secondary they will face all year.

Actually he was redshirting in Boone last year at this time. You do have to wonder where his head is now. Tough way to start your career.scatman77 wrote:We all need to remember that this time last year he was kicking in front of maybe a thousand fans. He has a strong leg and will do nothing but get better.appfan83 wrote:Okay I want to see anyone to go into a 100,000 seat stadium with screaming crowd in their first game and do better. I think poor clock management was key in this loss. How do we let the clock run out with 29 seconds left and two time outs? I dont know if Rubino would have made the kick but you had to try.

Re: Though loss
Other than getting a bit conservative towards the end and mismanagement of the clock on that last drive I thought we had a great game plan. We have NEVER ever flirted with a delay of game penalty in the last 20 years with our style of play. You have to figure we spent a lot of time trying to simulate this plan. Just one of them things.ASUchipman wrote:I think poor clock management was key in this loss. How do we let the clock run out with 29 seconds left and two time outs? Re: Though loss
One helluva game. We turned a bunch of heads and earned a ton of respect last night. TN was outplayed. I can't help but question the play call with time running out in regulation. Why not call a TO and try for a long FG? I know Auburn ran one of those back but that was a fluke. If I remember our field position correctly it would've been a 47 yarder. I know he missed a PA and FGI think we should've taken the chance. He has the leg.
Great way to open the season! It's great to be a Mountaineer!

Re: Though loss
Our guys played a great game! It's a win in my eyes, took the #9 team in the country to OT and who knows had the ball bounced out of the end zone it could be a whole different storyline today. Rubino played in Apex and probably never had more than 2000 people watch him play, huge jump to 105,000 screaming TN fans. Sometimes the best way to learn is to put your feet to the fire and I couldn't think of a better fire than TN. So pumped and excited for this memorable season upon the Mountaineers!

We might have earned respect of other teams, but reading articles about the game you hear no praise for App. It's all wow Tenn did this that and the other and App just got lucky and shouldn't have scored that much. What else would you expect from sports writers.Snaggy wrote:One helluva game. We turned a bunch of heads and earned a ton of respect last night. TN was outplayed. Re: Though loss
Yeah I agree, it's very disappointing. App played their hearts out and left everything on the field and all you see is "Tennessee escapes" and nothing about how well App State played and how well they performed, but it's ok at the end of the season when we're 12-1 everyone will see what's up.ukappfan wrote:We might have earned respect of other teams, but reading articles about the game you hear no praise for App. It's all wow Tenn did this that and the other and App just got lucky and shouldn't have scored that much. I will say the announcers on SECTV could not have been more complimentary of App State. I told my wife before the game to prepare herself for nothing but Tennessee & SEC talk and surprisingly they did a fantastic job to covering App State almost better than Tennessee.

We play big-boy football now. There are no moral victories. I'm proud of how hard we played, but boy, I wanted that one.
Make no mistake, the narrative this morning is not "look at how good App State is". It's "Tennessee is overrated".
At the very least, it builds upon our lore as a giant killer. Bring on ODU!!

Re: Though loss
To be fair, there were a number of people who had doubts about UT coming in to this game. On paper, they look great but have underperformed over the last several seasons. I think those doubts linger until they demonstrate they are the team they have been touted to be. I think it dangerous for us to base our fortunes going forward based on this game.ah59396 wrote:We play big-boy football now. There are no moral victories. We accounted ourselves well last night and there is much to be proud about in our team's play. There is much to be positive about but, we let this game get away from us. The success of our season will rest on improving the areas where we didn't perform so well last night. Granted, we won't be playing UT every week but we can't afford to miss extra points or fail to take advantage of good field position.

Right now I see us as the 4th toughest team they will face. Could end up higher. Sept 24-October 15 will be brutal. They are looking at 9-3AppinVA wrote:We will be one of the toughest Tennessee faces all year.

Re: Though loss
I am still upset about this loss. I thought going into the game we would lose, just wanted it to be respectable. As the game progressed, and I realized that we were beating them in the trenches, I started to get really excited. I still knew the odds were against us, but based on the play on the field I felt we should win. Our lines did an amazing job on both sides of the ball. To out rush an SEC team is no small feat. We out played them and we should have won. There are no moral victories, we lost a game we should have won and it hurts. Worst part was how the game ended. We start a drive with about 3 minutes left and a tie score. Who could ever ask for more, right? We move the ball and as we get closer to field goal attempt range, we have a complete brain fart and run out of time with a time out in our pocket????? That one is on coach. I understand he was saving it for a field goal but we had already had multiple delay of game penalties and had not demonstrated an ability to get set on the ball quickly. Sat should have called a time out after Cox was stopped for a loss on second down. That way we could have at least taken a shot down field (10-15 yards) and gotten out of bounds for a closer field goal or an incompletion stops the clock and set up for a longer one. Bad 2 minute clock management. I am sure the coaches and team will learn from this game and not make the same mistakes in the future.

Re: Though loss
We should not have another game, except maybe Miami where we look to milk the clock on possessions. Can't see clock management as an issue going forward. Hopefully we will speed it up on everyone else going forward.
