Re: Spring Ball
I had thrown out a comment on a thread before the season started (last year) asking what would happen if, heaven forbid we didn't win 10 games as had been the "standard ". Answers were interesting and many right on the mark- meltdown! We generally assumed that even at the great App State we could continue to weather coaching changes and big roster losses. Amazingly other teams we face actually recruit pretty good athletes and actually hire pretty good coaches. We don't have Idaho and other FCS level teams in the Sunbelt to beat up on.

Re: Spring Ball
We will be as good as our offensive line.I think we have three offers out but it could be four .It might be that we take the first two that comitt. As to QB , from what I have seen , McHugh looked very good.I think the plan is to redshirt him but he can move , and sling it.If the other two are better overall , we are in good shape. As to record , it has to be more wins than losses this year , setting up championship runs in 24 and beyond.

Re: Spring Ball
If we can keep...the HC, OC and DC for the next 3 to 4 years I think we will make a good run for championships. I think we will be 8-4 possibly 10-4 depending on Championship game and/or bowl game opponent. Marshall and ECU are my 50/50. I think our offense will be tough to stop this year. I predict we score 30 or more each game (maybe a game where we run out the clock keeps us under 30)....Hopefully it is enough points for our defense. The defense will decide if it is a championship run.

Re: Spring Ball
Clark has not mentioned WRs much, if at all, in post practice interviews..How is Stroman performing?. Based on limited action last year, I thought he has some excellent potential.

Re: Spring Ball
Is last years team better than this years team on paper? I believe last years team was better on paper but underperformed.
Hopefully the defense improves under the new DC! We have potential to be better, especially on defense. My guess is that Vegas will have us at a 7.5 projected win total. Last season they had us at 8.5 wins, assume they dock us a win from CB7 moving on.

Last years team didn't have the athletes on D to compete. Leadership played a big role as well. Need guys to step up. IMO311neers wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 10:53 amIs last years team better than this years team on paper? I believe last years team was better on paper but underperformed.

Re: Spring Ball
Combined that with injuries and it was a recipe for disaster. You are absolutely correct, someone has to step up.Appmountaineers19 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 10:59 amLast years team didn't have the athletes on D to compete. Leadership played a big role as well. Re: Spring Ball
I don't want to make any excuses for forward progress but if I am really being fair, a 10 win 2023 team with current Sun Belt is materially better than a 10 win 2016 season.

Last year's team had fewer unknowns. That makes fans comfortable because we don't like uncertainty.311neers wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 10:53 amIs last years team better than this years team on paper? I believe last years team was better on paper but underperformed.

Whether this year's team is better or worse "on paper" is impossible to say, because we are going to have a lot of new players in major roles, and we don't know how good any of them will be.

Re: Spring Ball
Bluntly and no shocker, imo, our Defense was the reason we didn't have a season as we most all have become expected to have. Ahead of the '23 season my wish list is we can get better on that side of the ball, but looking at our line and unknown QB battle has me concerned on Offense as well...along with a few other items, so I'm cautiously optimistic heading into the season.

Re: Spring Ball
This assumes you want to keep the HC for four more years. Not saying for or against but that’s a long time in the coaching world and it also bakes in an assumption of professional growth.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 10:24 amIf we can keep...the HC, OC and DC for the next 3 to 4 years I think we will make a good run for championships. Re: Spring Ball
We had some key play calling blunders in a few games on offense that cost us dearly. Up the middle on 3rd and 4th downs were obvious to the opposition that was coming. Won't hurt my feelings if we don't run a single play up the gut a single play this year. On defense, I can't help but think they will be better. Offense is a question for me this year with all that will be replaced.Black Saturday wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 1:05 pmBluntly and no shocker, imo, our Defense was the reason we didn't have a season as we most all have become expected to have. Re: Spring Ball
Playcalling on both sides should be pretty dependable this season. Also, with QB competition, it’s ok if they’re competing to see who is better. Where you get in trouble is when they are competing to see who sucks less.Yosefus wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 3:47 pmWe had some key play calling blunders in a few games on offense that cost us dearly. I'm scared our trajectory since the hire is .500 while we are throwing stones.appgrad95&97 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 4:54 pmCan we accept that Clark has taken us from expecting 10 wins to hoping for 8?

Re: Spring Ball
Excited for both. I thought for sure Burger would be the guy. The fall competition will be fun to watch, hopefully one plants himself as the clear #1 by then.
On a related note, how is the other QB Mason McHugh progressing?
GO APPS!!
