19 Cathey, Nikia WR 5-9 175 So. Memphis, Tenn. (Westwood)
Honestly not a huge surprise given the guys we've brought in with this class. Wish him luck wherever he goes.

Re: Roster Updates
We still have slot guys such as Ike Lewis, Jaylan Barbour, Deltron Hopkins, Darrynton Evans, Jaquil Capel, and Dante Jones so while he will be missed we have a lot of talent that can step up.

I wouldn't think he would leave the program if he felt he was in the position to make a significant contribution ---

Re: Roster Updates
Only surprise with this one was that it took this long. I think because of his recruiting ranking, some still held out hope that he would make an impact. But he was buried on the depth chart.

Re: Roster Updates
On 24/7 you can see our highest rated recruits we'll landed, this may shock some:
- Barbour (2014) - looks to be on the two deep at WR this year
- Garnett (2013) - left team, don't remember him playing
- Covington (2013) - left team after one year, never played
- Daniel David (2015) - transferred after one year
- Meadors (2014) - stud WR, looking for big things this year
- Cathey ( 2014) - left team this week, got in a couple plays last year
- Marcus Williams (2016) - will redshirt this year
- Law (2012) - NFL talent
- Boyd (2014) - current 4th string RB in a loaded stable of RBs, should see time this year
- Letman (2015) - redshirt last year will see time this year
40% of top 10 by the rankings never made an impact.
The percentage of contributors is much better in the next 20 with only three that left the team early:
- Holloway (2012)
- Walton (2014)
- Noil (2014)

Re: Roster Updates
Also worth checking out the 247 class calculator rankings to compare the highest-ranked guys to the lowest-ranked. Look at that 2014 class and compare the top guys to the ones at the bottom. Most of our best players were considered by 247 to be nearly- in some cases totally - worthless in determining class rank.

Re: Roster Updates
It would be interesting to see how this compares to other G5 programs. I am going to venture a guess that it doesn't differ very much.Saint3333 wrote:On 24/7 you can see our highest rated recruits we'll landed, this may shock some:

Re: Roster Updates
I know recruit rankings don't really matter much as a measuring tool on future impact, but do you think that recruits pay attention to the rankings or that it could ever knock someone over the fence if they were back and forth on 2 schools?

I hope we can find a way to get Josh Boyd on the field more this year. It will be a challenge with how stacked we are at RB, but when he had the ball last year he looked like he could take it to the house on every play.

Re: Roster Updates
I've said this for years. Once these sites get below the 4/5 star and top P5 level players then the evaluation/ratings should be taken with a BIG grain of salt. I've been doing this long enough to know how most of these sites come to their ratings and they base their decisions on a set of criteria that mostly has nothing to do with actual evaluations. There are many thousands of high school football players across the country. Can't get to them all. And the smaller conferences/schools have an even harder time getting someone to come see a player(s). There is also a lot of behind the scenes ratings based on who you know and how much pull a beat writer/site owner has with the regional guys. It doesn't take a genius to see what takes place in some of these cases. How a recruit with no offers at all commits to one school and the next day is a mid to high three star. And other schools at the same level have an unrated player to commit and receive the lowest grade, if any at all. We don't recruit guys based on recruiting site ratings. We pick them from experience, evaluation, and hands on work. I do the recruiting info for this site and the only reason I put the ratings in my posts is because others want them. I look at what I see. And what I'm told from camps/visits/evaluations.

Re: Roster Updates
Anyway, back to the present... I think many of us expected Cathey's departure after last season. Maybe he wanted to give it one more go in spring ball, maybe he just preferred to wait until spring semester to transfer. Whatever the case, best of luck to him.

Re: Roster Updates
Agreed. I will add one thing. I think it's more likely the first statement. Based on comments by him and others I expected him to be removed from the roster before spring but to complete classes. But he must have decided then to stick it out and told the staff that or else they would never have allowed him to go through spring ball/off season workouts. If he was to have been seriously injured during them that would have been on us for the rest of the time here. But as I said when I posted it I think, once the new class got here, the writing was on the wall. Wish him the best.EastHallApp wrote:Anyway, back to the present... Re: Roster Updates
I think the challenge with some of the higher rated guys is that they come in expecting immediate playing time. If/When that doesn't happen and they find themselves having to compete for playing time, they get discouraged. I'm not saying this as a slam on them or anybody, it's just a reality. I would imagine other G5 programs have the same problem.

Re: Roster Updates
How many 3-lower 4 star guys go to bigger P5 schools thinking they will start immediately and have pro aspirations only to sit? Some of these same guys could star at a school like App (or maybe not). We have said it numerous times. The ratings system is BS a great deal of the time. A stud could play at a 1A school and not see great competition but still has the tools to excel at the college level

Re: Roster Updates
I think the problem with some is that they are only athletes, they have no desire to get the degree. This statement is in general for the whole country, I know APP vets the players a little better than other schools but it sometimes changes once they get on campus and realize everyone was a star in high school.

A 5' 9" wide receiver to play FBS football? Is this a misprint?firemoose wrote:Have one deletion to post:

Re: Roster Updates
Seriously... Some people's comments about player size make me wonder if they ever actually watch major college football, let alone the NFL. Every WR isn't 6'3", and every OL isn't 320 pounds.AppStateNews wrote:I guess Wes Welker, Steve Smith and the like never played FBS football...NewApp wrote:A 5' 9" wide receiver to play FBS football? Re: Roster Updates
They have "mostly" done an update to the roster to add some of the PWO's that are already in camp. I've just been waiting for them to show up on there before I went back and did the double check. As of this morning most of the height/weights for them have not been added so I'm going to * those and use the figures I had from my research. I'll bold there hudl listed positions and h/w beside their App info. I still see a few not listed that are showing on the .edu page but not on the roster yet. I'll keep doing my checks and will add them if/when they show up.
There is also one familiar name back on the roster after a year absence, and one familiar WR not showing yet but who is in camp and has been practicing.
Additions:
64 Appling, Jake OL - Fr. Shelby, N.C. (Shelby)* OG/OC (6' 4" 275)
