This is my thought for those that transfer-in, then transfer-out.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 7:55 amShow of hands- who besides me now about says “who cares” as it relates to guys transferring? I would love it if more stayed but frankly this is beyond ridiculous. People have started comparing college football to the NFL. Imagine if every pro player had a one year contract and a third of the league entered free agency.

Didn't someone earlier in the season say they knew Castle was going to transfer and Clark was playing him more to increase his visibility?

If it's a big name contributor, I get a little bummed. If it's a guy who hasn't performed all that well, or was second or third string, it doesn't really register with me.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 7:55 amShow of hands- who besides me now about says “who cares” as it relates to guys transferring? Also, we've had a coaching change. Even before the new rules, players were allowed to transfer after a coaching change without the one year penalty because it's not fair to make a kid play for a coach that didn't recruit him. So, I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised that a lot of guys are transferring out. We will and do have a lot of guys transferring in as well.

Guys like Hopper and Roberts were gone either way. Every year we are doing to lose 35-50% of the top 6-8 contributors.

The players are all now mercenaries. The days of players coming to play football at ASU because of the program, the history or the culture are coming to an end. There is no commitment to your team, your teammates or the school. This is a farce.

I haven’t used the term “ mercenary “. But I’ve thought about it.

The system needs to evolve to contracts like coaches or NFL, you sign for a 3 or 4 year period. If you want to leave, new school pays the buyout and pays player more than what you were paying. That would eliminate some of it if the buyouts are enough to hurt so to speak. Some of the Power schools are just buying talent because they can with the war chest. At least schools that lose players...they get renumeration for time coaching and building players to get to Power level.
Personally, I would like App to consider a lower roster size so as to have more funds per player. Understand the risk with depth, however, we got to figure out ways to compete in the new world with less funds than larger schools.

Contract negotiations would vary widely, imagine the variables with terms, buyout dollars, non-competes, etc.

That is just like every contract in the corporate world with executives and in sports with coaches. They are professional level employees...that is where we are at, however, the investment in he players over the years is more more than typical employee if one really thinks about. It is an ongoing consulting contract to make players.

I don't remember the part about Clark playing him more to increase visibility, but it was posted that he planned to leave to cash in on NIL. I think Clark played him more because early in the year he was our most productive, he had a monster game at Clemson and I remember many saying that he was our best back after the Clemson game. A couple of dropped passes and limited opportunities turned that view on its head.

You want to know what really sux. I walked on at App and it was a great experience. Limited roster size would have taken that experience from me. I hope that never happens.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 10:04 amThe system needs to evolve to contracts like coaches or NFL, you sign for a 3 or 4 year period. I don't think it was anyone with any legitimacy. They were just opining.t4pizza wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 10:43 amI don't remember the part about Clark playing him more to increase visibility, but it was posted that he planned to leave to cash in on NIL. I think it is fair to say that the days of the walk on as it was in the good old days is probably gone. Too many kids with stars still sitting in the portal that will get attention well before walk on kids. Times change.Mjohn1988 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 10:54 amYou want to know what really sux. I understand the lure of the Watauga high products, and some play there butts off for App, but there’s more talent off the mountain. Reminds me of Dabo trotting out his son’s, Venable’s son and Pickens county kids over 4 and 5* athletes. Time to up our recruiting game.

AC walked on senior day. I don’t know him and don’t have any inside info… but I saw it and had the thought he is debating whether he wants to continue playing or not. In such situation, why not put name out there and see if there are any intriguing bites.

Not really a surprise. Word half way through the season was he was going to test the portal at the end of the year or be done all together.

As to Castle. Going to try to see a different part of the country or hang it up. Good kid. Don’t blame him.
