Re: Three sides to the story
There is no mess. A decision has been made. The major parties to that decision have accepted it and have moved on. Coach Moore and Margaret, for instance, are at their beach house in Myrtle Beach and are having a lot more fun than many of us who continue to snipe.
Time to man up and move on like the Moore Family, Charlie Cobb and Chancellor Peacock have done!

Not at all, but my argument was never with the amount to begin with, it was the fact that he was the second highest paid assistant.JCline0429 wrote:Was it an insane amount Speir and Moore were making?

Re: write up about moore's "retiring"
Here's the coaches' salary list from 2011, coming straight fron the N&O's database of state employees.
Jerry Moore (23 seasons with program) $170,000
Dale Jones (16) 85,801
Mike Kent (2*) 78,885
Mark Speir (9) 72,100
Chris Moore (13) 72,100
Bob McClain (2) 70,000
Scot Sloan (2) 65,300
Brad Glenn (7) 65,000
Jason Blalock (2*) 31,500
Trey Elder (2) 25,000
John Holt (4) 22,625
John Mark Hamilton (3) not available
* Second Tenure as ASU assistant
Chris' "13 years of experience" includes the first six of which he was a student assistant and a volunteer. He went from nothing to second-highest paid assistant in seven years. For those years Jerry "deferred raises to his assistants", a lot of it went to Chris. His salary jumped up to 230K this season since he didn't defer.
Also, both Holt and Elder were limited-earnings assistants. Jerry told everyone there was no guarantee they would have jobs when the FBS move happened.
This was a big reason why they went to Western as they got a pay increases plus they now run their own summer camps, which provides extra income that isn't on the books.

Re: write up about moore's "retiring"
The list I pulled from had already replaced Kent with Kareem Young. I did go back and find a listing that had Kent on it, but he was not listed as part of the football staff. He was listed as Strength and Conditioning Coach.T-Dog wrote:Here's the coaches' salary list from 2011, coming straight fron the N&O's database of state employees.

Re: write up about moore's "retiring"
"I don't throw things around without checking them. I had seen a list that showed what I said. Your accusation bothered me though, so I went back and dug out the information. From the 2011 N.C. University salary database, the only assistant coach with a higher salary than C. Moore was D. Jones. Speir had the same salary as Moore. So he was the second highest paid coach on the staff. No myths here.
Thanks for finding that list. It's one I put together more than a year ago. It paints a more accurate picture of the salary situation.

Re: write up about moore's "retiring"
Everyone has an opinion, here's mine. Maybe, even probably, there was a verbal agreement last year. The coach who led this program to what it is now after 2004 wanted to coach another year and we didn't let him. It will be difficult to find a coach to lead the program to 8 years as successful as the last 8. It will be nearly impossible to find a coach who is the extremely positive mentor to young impressionable student athletes that coach has been. He deserves better. This is more unc-ch than asu.

What I have gathered from this thread: Jerry Moore is a good man, but he isn't perfect.

Did you just really compare ASU to Charlotte Community College? You lost credibility in doing so...Ashe_App wrote:Everyone has an opinion, here's mine. Statement from Chancellor Peacock
Chancellor Peacock has issued a statement in support of Charlie Cobb. It reads:
In light of recent coverage of Appalachian State University’s announcement that 2012 would be Coach Jerry Moore’s last season after 24 years as the university’s head football coach, Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock commented on the university’s decision to seek new leadership for the football program.
“My support of Appalachian State University Athletics Director Charlie Cobb remains ardent, and I appreciate the professionalism and integrity with which he leads our athletics program. A year ago Mr. Cobb presented Coach Moore with a written communication telling him it was time to end his coaching career at Appalachian and offered him a three-year commitment in a different role at a six-figure salary. In a subsequent memo to me dated December 31, 2011, Mr. Cobb indicated Coach Moore declined the offer and instead requested a final year as head coach for the 2012 season. Mr. Cobb recommended we honor Coach Moore’s request, and I accepted his recommendation. In a routine update with then Board of Trustees Chair G.A. Sywassink, I reported this decision.
“Additional confirmation that Coach Moore was aware of this decision in advance of last Sunday was relayed to me by Trustee Brad Adcock, a close personal friend of Coach Moore and long-time supporter of the program and Appalachian. Mr. Adcock said he spoke to Coach Moore this past July out of admiration and a desire to appropriately recognize him in his retirement. Coach Moore asked him when he should announce his retirement—at the start or conclusion of the 2012 season. Mr. Adcock deferred to the university’s administration.
“While I have great respect for Coach Moore’s accomplishments, I fully support Mr. Cobb’s decision and leadership of our athletics program.”

Re: Statement from Chancellor Peacock
Yep. And what exactly does that say about JM's remarks about not knowing?
“I don’t won’t to offend anybody. There’s not any big, big issues. It was a communication thing between Charlie and I… and I don’t want to cause any issues now.”- Jerry Moore in the Winston Salem Journal
Maybe Cobb should have used bigger letters in his WRITTEN communication. "I dont want to cause any issues now," well oops. Sure screwed that one up didnt he?

Re: Statement from Chancellor Peacock
Jerry Moore put Appalachian State on the maps for everyone in the USA to see. I hate to see him go, but it is what it is. It's time to move forward with the "young ASU" football team. I really think someone close to ASU will get the job (I hope) and we will only get better. We have a ton of FRESH & SOPH who start. I would hope we continue the spread offense as it is so fun to watch.
It's time to start a new chapter with the ASU football program and support our new coach and enjoy the new conference (Sunbelt as people all over think we will go to). I like being the big fish in the small pond, but at least Wake Forrest, UNC and other chicken shit schools will finally play us. I would rather play Wake and UNC than Samford or Eloan or Leftern.
Coach Moore was awesome and was a great role model. At some point there has to be a change; 50% will like it and the other 50% won't like it. It's time to come together as one and make this ASU football program grow grow grow. We should be awesome next year and the years to come.
