Ditto for me.

IMO we under performed last year and with reloading of key players and DC it is only reasonable for everybody to take a cautious expectation for us this year.

I have high hopes for this year but without historical facts to back up my hopes we can only speculate until season starts to see how we gel and how quickly we gel.

We should be able to handle most of G5 comp but I am talking how we rank in the full FBS picture which is now my goal.

No more have been rated from our schedule but some interesting ones:

Louisville is number 66. Still us and the other 2 left for the top half of rankings.

stAte at 64. Us and Troy left.

Boston College at 58. Us and Troy left.

At this point it is clear Satt’s reputation and consistency is probably carrying us up the list. I like it.

I see some of the teams that were below us have had much more inconsistent performances year over year, some really good years but also really bad years. Sat has kept us on pretty much a steady climb

Starting to wonder how far up the list these folks will rank us.

We are going to be ranked around 75 spots higher than UNC Charlotte. It would seem that them beating us would be a bigger upset than us beating Michigan back in the day.

With a new QB and right side of the OL, I'm surprised we haven't been named yet.

I'm surprised Buffalo hasn't been named yet. There are still a ton of G5 teams left.

Based on key losses that is a pretty solid ranking.

I would agree with this assessment as well. Overall, it is fair. With no disrespect to author or players, I wouldn’t consider the losses of Dufield and Lewis to be key given that Reed was 1A last year and Sutton is a more than adequate replacement for Lewis. Don’t get me wrong, Lewis stepped up big time when needed and was an unsung star last year, but Sutton is bigger and stronger and will provide more difficulties with matchups when he, Hennigan, and Virgil are on the field together.

I wanted to be higher but if I am honest with all facts this is a very good and fair. It could have been worse and still fair.

Again I say this is mostly based on our reputation of consistency and getting the most out of our players during last 4 yrs.

Just going by the ranking, I think it’s meaningful that we’re 54 as a G5 team losing a four-year starting QB and other big pieces. The professional football-talkers expect us to be as good or better than the average P5 team even when replacing key positions and partially rebuilding. We are the real deal.

Strengths: While Appalachian State lost a veteran quarterback in Taylor Lamb, the Mountaineers' next starter will work with a talented offense that includes star running back Jalin Moore, tight end Collin Reed, Kansas State transfer Corey Sutton, young receivers who gained experience last season and a stout offensive line.

The secondary may be the biggest strength of the team, with cornerbacks Tae Hayes and Clifton Duck combining for 10 interceptions and 18 passes broken up.

Coach Scott Satterfield praised the speedy defense during an interview with the Winston-Salem Journal.

“The defense flew around all spring and made it difficult on the offense to move the football,” Satterfield told the newspaper. “And I think that is only going to make us a better team as we head throughout the summer.”

Weaknesses: Lamb played a key role in Appalachian State's success. He made sound decisions in a run-first offense and could be counted on to make a play through the air when it was needed. Four quarterbacks will compete for the starting job during preseason camp. Zac Thomas, who was Lamb’s backup and played in four games last season, is the favorite to take over as the new starter.

Defensive coordinator Nate Woody, who took the same job at Georgia Tech during the offseason, was a crafty play-caller and won't be easy to replace. He led one of the strongest defense's in the Sun Belt during his tenure with the Mountaineers.

Outlook: If Appalachian State can offset the loss of some key leaders, the Mountaineers should once again contend for a Sun Belt title.
