Re: Football Stadium Expansion
Not that the "article" listed above is anywhere NEAR real, but it did fire me up about the Lowe's-AppState relationship again.
Lowe's, as a whole, is doing everything they can to get away from the Wilkes/High Country moniker and establish themselves as a Charlotte company. They've slowly moved most of their operations to Mooresville and, for some reason, have decided that it's Charlotte. They continually back UNCC and Davidson with ticket events for employees and sponsorships. Back when Larry Stone and Steve Stone (both ASU grads) were in the Ivory Tower, they had their chance to become a HUGE corporate sponsor. But the company decided Wilkes/High Country were not good enough.

We've got a better line-in with Home Depot, anyway.

I prefer shopping at Home Depot, anyway, even though I have to drive 30 miles as opposed to 2 miles to do so.appalum2003 wrote:Not that the "article" listed above is anywhere NEAR real, but it did fire me up about the Lowe's-AppState relationship again.

The Home Depot connection makes more sense than Lowes, though I don't believe Arthur Blank is involved with Home Depot on a regular basis anymore.
Stadium Drive should be renamed Jerry Moore Drive. It has a nice ring to it.
Expanding the stadium by removing the track and lowering the field is the best long term expansion option. About 5,000 seats could be added to the sidelines by lowering the field; about 4,000 seats could be added to the south endzone while still preserving some green space leading up to the scoreboard (similar to Clemson); and about 5,000 seats could be added to the north endzone creating a complete lower level concourse that encircles the entire stadium (the north endzone seats shouldn't extend much higher than the existing temporary stands thus preserving the Howard's Knob view). If necessary, an upper deck could be added to the east side for another 8,000 seats. In total, the permanent seating capacity would expand from just under 22,000 seats to 36,000 to 44,000. This is an ideal size for App.
Any expansion needs to involve the removal of the track. The plans that were publicized last season were terrible. I couldn't think of a worse expansion plan than one that includes an 8-story dorm and stands on the north side of the stadium. I can only hope those plans were pure speculation.

Re: Football Stadium Expansion
I used to like shopping at HD when they used the air tubes to move around money and credit card receipts at the registers. I have been fascinated by those tubes since before grade school and I remember shopping in the Belk's in downtown Newtown with my mom That would have been around 1974 or so. I still remember the sales staff would use those tubes between the registers just so I could watch. I used to do transactions at HD just so I could see the tubes do their "magic" err...science. At that was only a few years ago as an adult in their mid-30s.JCline0429 wrote:I prefer shopping at Home Depot, anyway, even though I have to drive 30 miles as opposed to 2 miles to do so.appalum2003 wrote:Not that the "article" listed above is anywhere NEAR real, but it did fire me up about the Lowe's-AppState relationship again.

I think it was his family who donated the money. He died in 1991 and was pretty much in ill health in the twilight of his life when the William J Conrad was renamed for him in circa 1988. (Someone might want to bother to fact check these points). Kid Brewer's team was the only ASU team to ever go un-defeated-unscored on during a regular season. Sure, they played some light weights, but keep in mind that US 321 was pretty much unpaved during much of that era and ASTC was truly back woods.
UNC-Chapel Hill played ASU the next year, I think, but by then all Kidd's horses had left the barn, so to speak.
