To the victor goes the spoils I guess. I will say it has been hard seeing the P5 bias shining through as various write ups tout Drake Maye as special this past week when statistically he was matched or outperformed in most categories by Chase Brice. I've even seen the Maye for Heisman talk start. Wonder if Chase would get those same accolades if we got the W as well?
There is some P5 bias with some media but you can't judge players just based on stats. If that is the case then just draft the FCS or D2 kid who has the most passing yards in all of college football this year as the number one pick. Brice is a good player but being able to watch this game and see Maye is the better player is the difference between fans who just read stats and pros who evaluate players for a living. Maye is a more fluid athlete, faster, stronger arm, and a little more consistent passer. Brice is a good player but I don't think many folks realize just how good Barbay is in his play designs and calls. Many of the big throws by Brice the WR was wide open by design. You can't just look at stats but have to look at the skill set of a player.
BS on this one. Barbay didn't place Brice in better positions than whoever called the plays for the holes. Brice's stats were better because he had a better game. In this 1 game, Brice is better. Over a season who knows. Numbers don't lie.

You are right in that Brice had a better stat game but that does not mean he is the better player, he just had beter stats. The numbers can lie depending on what you want to do. Just because you ran for 80 yards and someone else runs for 100 does not mean they were better. Perhaps they played a weaker team or maybe they had more carries.

Barbay called a very good game that helped give Brice more open receivers. Brice made good reads but just calling our stats is a lazy argument because a lot does not show up on stats. Earle never has monster stats but is probably our 3rd best defender because he does his job very well. You just went back to the stats, which is what we call a boxscore scout in football, instead of evaluating their ability. There is no question that Maye has a better arm, more fluid runner, faster, and overall makes better reads. Brice is very good but I guarantee you that NFL teams and major media who get paid to do this all agree that Maye is a better player because he is.

Also, you made the point to call them bias towards a P5 but did not account for your bias. Pot meet kettle lol. You are an App fan who just looked at stats. When pros who get paid to do this say Maye is better than I would trust them over a casual App fan who is not paid to do this. I'm not trying to be mean but just pointing out something that you overlooked.
I may have misread better player or better game but I stand by Brice had the better game and on this afternoon he was the better player. Factor Brice was passing into a P5 defense. On average better athletes and Jones is good but Chexmix for Carolina is probably a better OC. Brice put some touchdown throws on a dime, many of Maye's receivers were wide open and running away from our defenders before the throw was made. Maye had a good day but a lot of that was how we made him look.

If the two quarterbacks switched places Saturday and everything else was the same, who would be the better quarterback? The way the two teams played Saturday you could argue that we saw two evenly matched teams on the field if you look at the score, the only statistic that matters...

Didn’t Brice earn Sun Belt POW? That’s something, at least.

Brice threw for more yards but as someone else said he had more rushing yards and thus more total yards. Really the only overall stat Brice had him in was TDs and he had 6 TDs with 1 INT compared to 5 TDs and 0 picks by Maye. Brice had a good day but it would be bias to say that Brice is the better player. Maye is a very talented guy and just a freshman. Imagine how Maye could look in 2 years from now. It will be scary good.

And you made the comment that "Maye had a good day but a lot of that was how we made him look". I think you could say the same for Brice. Barbay and the poorly called UNC defense plus awful play by DBs made Brice look great. Both QBs had the benefit of DCs calling below average games and DBs making a lot of mistakes. I will be curious to see if Brice has anymore games like this when we play Marshall, JMU, Coastal Carolina, A&M, and Georgia State.

I agree, maye had more rushing yds. because our coverage and pressure forced him to run.

Just made an accurate assessment that statistically he outperformed Maye in quite a few categories. But hey, I'm just a fan that reads stats.

And he is a good athlete with very good speed that makes him a threat to run. He is tough to stop. I did not go back and break it down but I wonder how often we had someone designed to spy him and he just was able to make them miss or out run them? We had open areas and he is too fast not to tuck it and go when he has those lanes.

I think it is fair to say statistically that they were both very close with each of them outperforming the other in something. I think that is why I argued because UNC could say Maye outperformed Brice in quite a few categories.

Comparison
Maye- 24 of 36; Brice- 25 of 36
Maye- 76 yds 1 TD rushing; Brice- 36 yds rushing
Maye- 352 yds 4 TDs; Brice- 361 yds 6 TDs
Maye- no picks; Brice- 1 pick
Maye- 5 total TDs; Brice- 6 total TDs

Maye's QBR was 19 points higher. He was also one for one on 2 point conversions, which turned out to be pretty important.

Maye lost a fumble, so turnovers were essentially even. I don’t recall if UNC scored on the ensuing drive after the int, but I know App scored after the fumble.

Exactly. When you watch Brice and Maye run you can easily tell who the better athlete is. Brice had a great game and should be a good player but there is no question that Maye is the better player.
Not ready to give the “better player” title to Maye just yet. He’s only played 2 games. I will says he has a skill set that Brice will never have, he can run. Just to be clear I’m a fan of our QB and hope he sticks around for that last year of eligibility.

Yes he did fumble and UNC hit a 44 yard field goal because of it. Chase fumbled on a two point try but obviously UNC was getting the ball anyway.

Maye has first round talent down the line. Brice is real good but he just isn’t the athlete Maye is. Both may very well make a NFL roster though. It would not shock me if Maye is a future starter and Brice is on PS or 3rd string in NFL. Brice doesn’t have another year. He is indeed a super senior.

I thought Maye was the best player on the field , the difference maker .If Howell had come back for another year I think we would have beaten The Confederates Saturday. Remembering him from his freshman year, Maye seems way ahead. And Howell is in the NFL .That being said Chase played one whale of a game and impresses me as a very good college quarterback. The two point conversions are still in my nightmares and probably will be for awhile.Perhaps the difference between "good" and "great".

Maye was the difference in the game…Maye won the game for UNC…we couldn’t compensate for his ability to escape the rush and run the ball
Don’t disagree. I thought Brice was done too but others are saying he has another year and he is listed as a redshirt senior.

This is Brice's last year of eligibility. He is a 6th year red shirt senior. He got the extra year because of covid but this is his final year of playing college football.

Brice legitimately reminds of me of Tom Brady. Pure passer, can't run, wins games. He could definitely have a shot in the NFL.
