This is Price's second strike and a stern message needs to be sent. None of this selective game stuff either. Hard to figure this guy (Price) out. On the surface he seems like a polite, respectful young man but I'm wondering it that is a front and he's been playing everyone. Since the day he signed I've wondered how we got this guy from a area we very seldom recruit - only 20 miles from DC, who's team played in the state playoffs and was highly decorated track standout in DC for the high and triple jump. College coaches drool over kids with his speed and jumping ability that yet with all the good programs within 200 miles of Reston I don't recall Sean having any other offers. I hate to speculate but maybe they knew something we didn't.

Good timing with him being featured in the new issue of the Black & Gold newspaper.
I don't know Sean and I don't want to get into judging his character. I am disappointed by the behavior, but I do understand that he's a 20 year old college kid. I don't see this as a character issue as much as a discipline issue. He needs to make better decisions. I really just want to see the young man get his act together so that he can reach his true potential. If I believed it was a "character" issue, I would be less disappointed because it would be an inevitability. I think for the team's sake, and frankly for Sean's sake, the message needs to be very clear that this will not be tolerated. He is under age, so he can't legally drink to start with. Combine that with the fact that fall camp is in full swing and this just boils down to some really poor decisions.

Remember 4 games would be a good punishment for both sides.

Price takes a huge hit in his season stats and the team will win the 3 games after Montana with or without Mr. Price. If I was Jamal or another leader on this team I would sit him down. Just a thought.

We live in a world in which a knee-jerk reaction isn't normally the best of course of action. It's better to weigh the evidence, hear from the parties involved and then make a reasoned decision. Below is an example in the news yesterday of what happens when a school doesn't allow due process before it makes such a decision.

By DAN SEWELL
Associated Press
CINCINNATI — A former Xavier University basketball player sued the school, alleging it damaged his reputation by expelling him for what he says was a false sexual assault accusation.
Dez Wells’ federal lawsuit also names the private Jesuit Catholic school’s president as a defendant. Father Michael Graham said in a statement Wednesday that the university denies the allegations and will defend its decision to expel Wells.
Xavier kicked Wells out a year ago in the aftermath of a female student’s accusation that he sexually assaulted her in July 2012. A Hamilton County grand jury declined to indict Wells after hearing evidence in the case. Prosecutor Joe Deters later publicly questioned the school’s expulsion and urged Xavier to “revisit” the situation.
At the time, Xavier said Wells was expelled for a “serious violation” of the code of student conduct, and that a board consisting of faculty, students and administrators made the decision following standard procedures for U.S. universities.
Wells, who’s from Raleigh, N.C., was a freshman star for Xavier. He subsequently transferred to the University of Maryland, where he was a top player last season after the NCAA agreed to waive the usual transfer requirement for sitting out.
Wells says he has been heckled by fans and faces continued questions about his character.
“From the moment this nightmare began, I’ve told the truth. I am innocent,” Wells said in a statement Wednesday. “It’s time to make this right. Xavier needs to set the record straight.”
His lawsuit, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati, seeks unspecified compensatory, punitive and special damages to be determined at trial.
“The repercussions to Dez of the school’s reckless actions are significant,” attorney Peter Ginsberg said Wednesday. Wells also wants Xavier’s expulsion vacated, although he has no interest in returning there.
Wells’ lawsuit says that he had consensual sex with the woman. It charges that the school’s handling of the case was a fundamentally unfair rush to judgment, causing him emotional distress and public humiliation, and will hang over him if he tries to become an NBA player or seek other jobs.
“Xavier’s statement forever falsely taints and permanently damages Wells as a student who was expelled from his university for a rape that did not occur,” his lawsuit states. “Wells will eventually graduate from college and will likely face difficulties in obtaining employment as a result of Xavier’s actions and false and defamatory statement, or, alternatively, professional basketball teams will be more hesitant to sign Wells.”
Graham’s statement said the lawsuit’s allegations are “unfounded and cannot be supported” and that the sanction determined for Wells was expulsion was upheld on appeal.
“The university has never revealed the specific charge against Dez Wells other than to say he was found responsible for a violation of the student code of conduct,” Graham wrote. “The university will vigorously defend the process and the decision.”

Is there any chance he won't be suspended until after the Sept 19th court date? That way they could hear both sides and then make a decision? Or..Am I just being greedy? I want Coach Satterfield to make the right choice but man I wanted to see Price in Montana. Ugh!

WXII is saying Price is suspended an unknown number of games. The Appalachian is also saying Kalik Barnes is suspended as well.

Statement from the university:

August 22, 2013

Football

Contact: Mike Flynn

(828) 262-2845 • flynnmh@appstate.edu

Two Appalachian State University football student-athletes will serve suspensions for rules violations. Reserve quarterback Kalik Barnes has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities due to a violation of NCAA rules. Wide receiver Sean Price has been suspended for an undetermined number of games for a violation of team rules.

"We hold our student-athletes to high standards as representatives of our program, our University and our community," head coach Scott Satterfield said. "The decisions that Kalik and Sean made did not meet those standards and, therefore, there are consequences. Sean's suspension comes with a number of conditions that have to be met, not the least of which is re-earning the trust of the University, the community and his coaches and teammates. We hope that he will meet these conditions and be able to return to the field at some point in the future."

"I'd like to say 'I'm sorry' to my teammates and coaches, (Appalachian State Chancellor) Dr. (Kenneth) Peacock and the campus and local communities for the ill-advised decisions that I made that led to my suspension," Price said. "My actions were ill-advised and immature and don't reflect how I want to represent my team and my school. I hope to have the opportunity to return to the field and represent Appalachian State in a positive way."

It's time to kick Kalik off the team.

You are confusing Barnes with Bryant.

I think you're confusing Kalik Barnes with Kameron Bryant. Kalik was out all of last year due to a team rules violation. NCAA violation is a calendar year. Doubt he ever takes the field again.

This was the appropriate response from Satterfield. Good on him.

I have no problem at all with this punishment, but as an aside, the most accurate statement in this thread is:

"A police report gives a very narrow view of what actually happened."

Carry on.

Kalik is another kid who has been in nothing but trouble since the day he got to Boone. A lot of ability but little self control.

..Fish

I actually expected and think we deserve a critique of how Coach handled this based on your earlier post.

To all:

IF and I say again IF, we had, had twitter, FB, message boards et. al. back in the day many of us MAY have been in the same position we find Price but thank God we did not. He is a young man just like we were!

To all:

Barnes, was not going to see the field at QB, now he will not be on the field anywhere!
Go APPS!

What's really disappointing about this is that night after Fan Fest Satterfield addressed the team about how to approach school and behave off the field. He warned them about things exactly like this. Then he gets arrested that night. I don't know how coaches keep their sanity when things like this happen.

This! I'm as big an ASU fan as anybody but this just drives me nuts. They have been told and preached to over and over about this but this type of stuff still happens. I managed 5 years in Boone doing this stuff or, probably worse, without getting arrested. I just don't understand it. I will admit there is a possibility these guys are targeted but twice is too much. I have no sympathy for him. Forget ASU, he has/had a chance to be a first round draft pick and is squandering that chance. As much as he's hurting ASU, he's hurting himself more.

AppGrad78 wrote:From the way the incident was described to me, Price was at a gathering where a fight broke out. Price was not involved in the fight. When police arrived and attempted to break up the fight and disburse the crowd, Price began jawing. Police asked him to shut up and leave. Price failed to comply in a timely manner and was arrested on what amounted to a drunk and disorderly charge ("intoxicated and disruptive" was the term they used). Now, for any of us who've seen these kinds of situations, there is usually room for interpretation: Was Price being belligerent? Or were the police being heavy-handed with a situation that had long since been defused? Or is the truth -- as so often is the case -- somewhere in between? I don't know. I wasn't there. Neither were T-Dog and Gonzo. A police report gives a very narrow view of what actually happened. That's why we have courts with impartial judges and juries to sort out these things. Until then, can we put away our pitchforks.
Perhaps had he kept his mouth shut to begin, as asked, he wouldn't have opened a can of worms. But to do so would actually show he has something called respect for his elders, law and order. Clearly, he doesn't. Sad.

I'm glad none of us did anything stupid when we were 20. It makes it so much easier to cast stones.
