Speed and angles taken are the issue.

In years past we had a monster in the middle at DT commanding a double team and linebackers with great closing speed. If we had two guys like 8 at LB we'd be vastly improved there this year.

On Saturday’s broadcast, Avery Hall questioned if angles were coached anymore. This happened a little before the strip sack turnover. You could hear frustration in his voice a little before that before the offense started to move.

I don’t know how a converted safety (should be fast) is slow at Linebacker. Seems like the same thing happened to Caden Sullivan as well- too slow for safety so we put weight on them and now they’re too slow at LB? Where has he been? From a 2 year starter to not even playing snaps on defense.

i just can't accept 7 to 9 wins a year at best for Clark is acceptable....look at the last 3 years....these past 3 have been his staff...his recruits...6-6 (4-6 against fbs), 9-5 (good turnaround but still 5 losses), now 5-5 with a squad most predicted should be a sunbelt title contender...that is not the standard at App St. I'm not saying let's fire the guy....but a change at minimum defensively is needed after the season....some positves are yes i feel like we did show solid improvement defensisively last few games but shouldn't take 5 losses to get there....also...i hate to harp on this...but i have never seen App get totally embarrassed multiple times on national tv in season...there were too many times we looked like we didn't even want to be there...48-14 to S. Ala is absolutely inexcusable....38-24 to Coastal was embarrasing...i can almost excuse the clemson game since they are legit really good...but we looked way out coached and unprepared too many times. i'm willing for one more season but clark absolutely should be on a burning hot seat. One more positive is i believe our entire offensive line whom has shown improvement returns

I don’t blame him. Did we have five guys better than the best lineman in the SoCon ? I’m doubtful.
The ability to assess talent is a legitimate question and maybe the most troubling of all. Offensive line and linebackers have been a constant strength within the program and we've struggled in those departments recently.
I recall about 5 or so years ago we had what I thought were undersized linebackers. I can’t recall specific names but I think we had a couple of starters in the 210lb range. I thought we needed to get more in the 230ish range if possible but looking back those dudes, while smaller were fast and got to the ball carrier quickly. Have we sacrificed defensive pursuit quickness for trying to get bigger? Seems like those 6’3” 230lb type backers are both faster and on a P4 roster. Either some of the guys we have on defense are just slower or can’t read the offense.
Bingo!

Make you wonder what he could have done under Cummings instead of our prior OL coaches.

Arnholt had knee surgery as a senior in HS so no way to know how much speed that cost him. Otherwise I think the speed between the ears is the biggest issue for our ILB.

Exactly. I would never walk up to SC and say “you should be fired” because A.) it’s just disrespectful and B.) it’s not my place. I would actually pat him on the back and thank him because I could never fathom the amount of time commitment it takes to be a college football coach. I am appreciative of everything SC has done but that doesn’t mean I can’t voice my displeasure for something on Yosef’s Cabin

They say if you don’t vote, you can’t complain about politics. Well in college sports, if you don’t donate you can’t complain. I donate so I am allowed to complain sometimes!

There is no free discourse here. Negativity reigns supreme on this site and any difference of opinion is shouted down with accusations of bias towards relationships or access to information. Any information that creates internal conflict with one’s own beliefs is dismissed as excuse.

And for the record, my access to Shawn and any of the coaches for that matter are solely the same avenues open to anyone here. While I doubt anyone would question SC on his abilities in those environments, that access can be used to ask poignant questions as to the status of the program.

Anyways. Happy Thanksgiving!

His crime is that he is not Brownie. For me, if he could cut down on the “agains” he’d be right up there. He’s very knowledgeable.

I love the guy, I love what he has done for this university and what he has meant to this football team over the many years. He is App State. I would be glad to hang out with him anytime, but he is not the right coach for this program at this time.

Off the field, Clark represents App State phenomenally. I've shake his hand and chit chatted with him before. Regardless of how you feel about Head Coach Shawn Clark, you can be proud of App State Ambassador Shawn Clark.

100% correct " Speed and especially angles" are absolutely the issue. Sitting in the car riding home after the game with an alumni linebacker that is exactly what he said. He just kept shaking his head in frustration.
I am not going to claim to be an expert on the subject, but I think we also have a bit of an S&C thing going on.

We do seem to get “ out physicalled “ , in conference and out. Is that leverage, technique or speed/strength? I don’t know. I just don’t see us enforcing our will on people anymore. Saturday was better at times ….

From what I see it’s more strength and size. We are built to finesse not bully.

You cannot teach speed. Either you’re born with it or not.
Coaching on angles can happen to a certain degree, but it is largely intuitive.

If App has players who lack speed or can’t grasp angles, how can Greenhalgh be blamed?
