I definitely have warmed to him. He wasn't my first choice but it seems more likely he will our first choice.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2024 10:48 amWhat if I told you we had a chance to hire a 38-year-old coach with the following resume:
- Experience as a coordinator in the Big 12 and SEC.
- Led multiple top 25 national offenses.
- Took over a failing FBS program as head coach, won 10 games in year 2.
- Won a Sun Belt title, had three consecutive 10+ win seasons.
- Beat a top 20 LSU team in Death Valley.
Would that be a candidate you would find appealing?
That was Neal Brown's bio when he took the WVU job.
That is all still on his resume today, and he's still just 44 years old.
Does being a .500 coach at WVU negate all that? If Brown had never been a head coach but had three good years as an OC, would you like him better?
If you favor hiring a coordinator who's never been a head coach (and I'm not saying we shouldn't) - what makes you confident that that coach would do better at the P4 level (which isn't the job we're hiring for, BTW) than Brown did?
And don't tell me none of it matters because NIL/the portal. NIL and the portal are question marks for everyone. Nobody on our list, to my knowledge, has proven experience winning as an FBS head coach in the portal/NIL era. And even if they did, NIL resources at one school may not be the same as they are at another.
I'm not saying Neal Brown has to be your first choice, or even that he's mine. But to act like he's somehow a horrible candidate for a job at our level is pretty odd to me.

Brown is a very lazy choice. App would be quite a parachute for 6 years of mediocrity. 1st coach that hasn't been able to win in Morgantown since early 80s

Seems like the steam is towards Neal Brown.ASUPATCH wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2024 11:42 amAny early indications of who twitter thinks it is?BallantyneApp wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2024 11:16 amApparently from twitter scuttle we’ve either got our guy or made an offer

Looks like Neal already turned down UNCC and he is the "central figure" in our search.

Contract details as we all know , can derail an offer. Especially with multiple levels of approval required. Heather has shown her ability to make things happen though. I seems like we are close.

As much as think Brown could be successful in Boone, I think I'm with the crowd who would rather have an up-and-comer, than a "parachuter." However, he could look at it as a chance to prove himself and be more of a paratrooper. Woods at SMU is intriguing to me.

Almost sounds like it has come down to Woods and Brown. Both seem like great options. Sounds like we may have offered Brown. Neal is who I have wanted since the names broke. Seems like a really great man, have seen a lot of positive things written about him from former players. He’s 44, so I doubt he’s gonna pack it in and use this job as a “parachute”. Will be happy with either, but really wanted Brown. I love that he has plenty of HC experience.

Woods might be more difficult to get signed quickly since he’s getting set for a championship game and playoffs. Whereas Brown is a free man so to speak.
I suppose that could be a factor.

The one thing that would be good about Neal Brown being hired as coach.... I think he would come in here with a chip on his shoulder with something to prove to the football world. I'm trying to be positive as he would not have been who I would have picked but then again I'm not the athletics director nor am I the person writing those big old checks to college.

I’d be happy with either one. IMO both have positives that outweigh their negatives.

Retreads usually aren’t as hungry as I’d like to see, but he’s young enough to still want to get back to the big show, and wise enough to know which places he can be successful in said show.ASUTodd wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2024 12:57 pmThe one thing that would be good about Neal Brown being hired as coach.... Sounds like everyone is turning down UNCC from what I have heard.
I would be surprised if we already have our guy. DG was still calling coaches last night checking their interest levels in order to set up interviews.

I just realized that Woods was on staffs with drinkwitz at Auburn, Ark state, and Missouri for a couple of years. Maybe this has been mentioned, but I didn’t realize there was a connection other than Sparky.

The Athletic did their cookie cutter job report.
