The other three numbers we didn't retire until 2005-06, so it's not like retired numbers are a deep tradition here. It's a relatively recent thing, for the most part, and I think we could do away with it, opting instead to preserve and honor those special numbers.
And we could either unretire 23, 32, 38 and 71 or just leave them retired but don't retire anymore. Yes, for the moment we have plenty of numbers and duplication isn't an issue, but considering several of these retirements have been for someone whose playing career is long-over, and that we will hopefully have many more standouts, we could start seriously limiting ourselves before long.
We are in need of someone to take over the maintenance of the MMB. Yosef has done it for a long time, and we are grateful for all he has done, but life happens and he no longer has the time to devote to its upkeep. Sure, there is the Hall of Fame --- again, what would you guys suggest if an OL is the one honored to wear the legacy number - he can't wear #14 --- Also, I totally agree with the point about Kevin Richardson, who still remains my favorite APP player and Corey Lynch should be added as a 3-time All-American who always made the Big Play ---goapps93 wrote:Can we not honor players without retiring the number?

Can't see them anymore from our side so I sure thought they were gone. Re: Cox Breaks the Record
It's debatable. Had we not been the reigning FCS champion, Michigan might not have scheduled us. Michigan was ranked #1 in FBS and we were ranked #1 in FCS. That was how it was marketed.bcoach wrote:No actually they were taken down or painted over this year.Rick83 wrote:Aren't those 4 jerseys prominently posted on the visitor side stands where you can see them from the home side? Michigan was No. 5, but they were up there. The 2008 game at LSU was marketed as the two defending National champions though.

Yeah, nothing happens in a vacuum, but I'd argue that the average college football fan had no idea that we won those FCS national championships but the whole world (except for those living in caves)...not just the college football world...heard and was impressed by the Michigan win. I'm obviously a former FCS guy but I couldn't tell you who has won the last several FCS championships or even whose favored this year.NewApp wrote:It's debatable. Re: Cox Breaks the Record
Those who read the Charlotte Observer, which at that time reached hundreds of thousands knew it because it was plastered all over the front page as well as the front page of the sports section. Like you, I don't have a clue who the past several I-AA champs were but they weren't from NC with a strong history of good football like us. It was a major topic at my Kiwanis meetings around that time.Rick83 wrote:Yeah, nothing happens in a vacuum, but I'd argue that the average college football fan had no idea that we won those FCS national championships but the whole world (except for those living in caves)...not just the college football world...heard and was impressed by the Michigan win. Too, Big Ten fans keep up with their close to future opponents. You better believe most of the 100K fans in attendance knew we were a great program in FCS, not an Elon or WCU.

Re: Cox Breaks the Record
Don't disagree with anything you're saying but all of that pales in comparison to the national media coverage of that event which probably reached 10s and 10s of millions+ of people, including the cover of Sports Illustrated which is proudly framed and hanging in my study. That one game is probably mentioned more still today than our 3 national championships by the mainstream sports media...not saying that's the way it should be but that's the way it is.NewApp wrote:Those who read the Charlotte Observer, which at that time reached hundreds of thousands knew it because it was plastered all over the front page as well as the front page of the sports section. Ha...North Dakota who? I actually call myself an App State football fan...if FCS received more coverage there might be more interest...but since we're FBS now I am not ashamed to say I have little interest in the FCS world at this point, it was fun while we were there.WVAPPeer wrote:So you guys call yourselves football fans and you never heard of North Dakota State???

Man Marcus Cox is a beast and it was great that he broke the all time App rushing record- this is my attempt to get a thread back on track. Lol.
How did it get to an FCS playoff discussion?
